[Fishing] Fishing changes in 2.4 - The Dailies

  1. Oberweiss <Moderator>, 2 years ago:

That's interesting. Can anyone verify (or counter-verify) that your actual 'effective level' of fishing has a bearing on what you catch?

At first, I thought that this wouldn't be true. It doesn't seem consistent with the way that Blizzard has done things in the past.

However, I can confirm that the little evidence I have regarding catching the quest items for the fishing daily quest does support this.

Both the Crocolisk quest and the Zangarmarsh shrimp quest completed significantly faster on my characters with a higher fishing skill. Oberweiss, for example, got 2 shrimp in every bloated fish, and every cast was a bloated fish at skill 497 (used the quest reward hat, and too lazy to switch it out, heh). However, Ober usually got ~1.5 shrimp in every bloated fish, and also caught 3 Spotted Feltails during the quest at a skill of 405.

  2. Stephenn <Angler>, 2 years ago:

That will be much easier to test when Crocolisks are the daily quest again.

Today was Shrimpin' Ain't Easy again. Since the patch yesterday Bloated Barbed Gill Trout is not the only thing that you will catch in Zangarmarsh when doing the quest. It is still the majority of fish that you will catch, however. I got the Rumsey's Lager recipe today. w00t!

I can confirm the Bloated Giant Sunfish and the Darkclaw Lobster contents, I also got Stranglekelp X 3 in one.

Here are my stats from fishing about an hour ago for 20 minutes:

    Isle of Quel'Danas
    Skill: 495
    Giant Sunfish (13 : 30.2%)
    Luminous Bluetail (10 : 23.3%)
    Seaweed (7 : 16.3%)
    Lightning Eel (7 : 16.3%)
    Jaggal Clam (4 : 9.3%)
    Bloated Giant Sunfish (2 : 4.7%)

Fishing Buddy seems to be working better since Blizzard patched the PTR yesterday. I'm still getting errors once in a while. But at least the Easy Cast is working now.

And on an unrelated note, I won the Figureprints lottery this month. I'm so excited!!!

I ran The One That Got Away twice today, fishing at an effective skill of 400 (just 5 points above the minimum for the area). The first World's Largest Mudfish was caught on the 4th catch, the second on the 8th catch. That compares to 1st catch, 3rd, 9th, and 15th, while on fishing with an effective skill of 500 (mostly on other daily quests).

Obviously this needs a lot more tests before we can even start to see a pattern emerging... And that's going to be a problem, since we're limited to one test per character per day. And if the measure is actual base skill of the character (and not effective skill, which includes lures and gear bonuses), then I have no way to test it.

Fishing generates a lot of urban myths. Probably because anglers get a lot of time to think. The catch (no pun intended) is that some of these myths turn out to be true - for example, the variation of catch rates by time.

  4. Stephenn <Angler>, 2 years ago:

I disproved my own theory today. Fishing in SW for baby crocs. Skill level 395 and caught one on the third cast.

  5. Fianor <Angler>, 2 years ago:

This likely won't apply to anyone here, but for the sake of completeness it is possible to get a weather-beaten journal as a reward in the bag of fishing treasures. I copied a character with 375 fishing that I hadn't played in a few months to the test server and from my first reward bag, I got the journal. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a 100% drop if you don't have the fish finding ability already.

  6. Gummo <The Pacifist>, 2 years ago:

A bit more information on minimums required to get the fishing quests: my level 50 rogue could not get it with 300 fishing, nor could he get the quest by wielding his +5 fishing rod with a +100 lure (effective skill 405). Old Man Barlo does not have the ! quest cursor when my 50 mouses over him.

I'll attempt to get his fishing up to 325, 350, 375 and see if he can get the quests as his fishing skill goes up. I don't know if the quests are based on character level or fishing skill or both; the feedback from my 70 who did a quest was to suggest that the quest be available based only on fishing skill.

My 50 is the highest character I have that is below 70. I think it would be useful if someone has a 55 or a 60 to see if they can get the quests, and if someone has a 70 with very low fishing skill can get the quests, to see how level & fishing skill relate to the quest.

Addendum: While speed-fishing my 50s skill up in Ironforge, I cast right past Old Ironjaw after about 120 catches. By the way El, want to add another profile tag for (caught Old Ironjaw/Old Crafty/Caught opposite faction/Both)?

First update: quests not available to a level 50 with 325 fishing.
Second update: not available to a level 50 with 350 fishing.

It looks like the most recent 2.4 PTR does not allow swimming from the Blood Elf start area to the Isle of Quel'Danas; there is now an invisible east-west wall out in the deep (fatigue) water. I was unable to find a way around it even with a diving helmet and swim speed potions, so now it looks like the only way to get to the island before 70 is to get a warlock summon, and I don't know if you would be able to get the FP that way (since 70s get it from a quest). The level 1 BE priest I parked there can talk to the flightmaster but all he does is offer me a ride back to the mainland. Wowhead also says that a portal can be opened between Shattrath and the island by 'reclaiming' the island (doing daily quests), so maybe low-level fishergnomes will be able to get there eventually...

  8. Gummo <The Pacifist>, 2 years ago:

Rats, my level 50 still can't get the daily fishing quest even with 375 fishing. My guess would be 55 (like the Strange Engine Part) or 60 (to match the level needed for the Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat).

  9. Oberweiss <Moderator>, 2 years ago:

Just a note for the Horde fishers out there.

When trying to catch the World's Largest Mudfish out of Nagrand, make sure you are not in Garadar (says "Garadar" above your minimap).

My poor fisherwoman was fishing for almost 10 minutes before she realized that this may be the reason she hadn't caught him yet. She moved over about 50 yards so that the name of the lake was above the minimap, and caught him on the second cast.

  10. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 2 years ago:

One further bit of advice related to Oberweiss' comment: The catch is determined by where the bobber lands, which is not always the same area the angler is standing in.

The Sunwell portal isn't there yet (at least not on EU test realms). There is some sort of summoning going on in Shattrath (where the Heroic Dungeon vendor used to stand), which will presumably become a portal once enough progress has been made to retake the island.

Thanks once again for all the information. Most of it has been integrated into the summary.

Edit: Quick tweak - Old Ironjaw, Old Crafty and The 1 Ring can now be added to the achievements on your profile. And edit again: There's now also a little double-arrow link next to each topic on the forum's front page, which takes you direct to the most recent page and post.

  11. Katura <Angler>, 2 years ago:

hehe thanks muchly. My Mr. Pinchy didn't give me my petpet -cry cry-

but i will avail. i'll get it one day!

  12. Gummo <The Pacifist>, 2 years ago:

I did The One That Got Away, and more specifically than not being in Garadar, I seemed to NEED to be where it said "Skysong Lake". I fished for a long time in Skysong Lake where my location was "Nagrand" and never caught the largest mudfish, but got it on my first cast when I finally moved. I also tried the water at Windyreed Village, but that isn't a lake, so I couldn't get the quest fish there, either.

I don't know if this is considered worth mentioning as part of the quest prize, but I got 4 motes of water (plus gold and fishhooks).

Found some more news, not daily quests, but still 2.4 :) :
    * Feltail fishing nodes have been changed to Brackish Mixed Schools; they now produce mostly Golden Darters and some Feltail.

  15. Gummo <The Pacifist>, 2 years ago:

Another pricey vendor trash item from the reward: Beautiful Glass Eye I also got the fishing hat, so I'm wondering if Blizz increases good loot for testing. Seems too easy to get otherwise.

  16. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 2 years ago:

Perhaps Blizzard use different loot tables on different PTRs to test user feedback? Or you are just lucky? Certainly I haven't seen a rare reward all week - across 4 characters running fishing dailies each day.

It might take months of fishing dailies just to gain all the rewards fishing-related rewards. However, as currently designed, none of these rewards are essential:

    • A better line can still be obtained by grinding Tastyfish pools - for those able to fish during the contest.
    • The Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat is just a free lure - useful but nothing money can't buy.
    • Captain Rumsey's Lager can be made by others and sold on.

Pet collectors that try and collect all four new mini-crocolisks are evidently in for a long haul. If the theories are correct, and the pet only drops as a reward from one quest, they are already limited to a quarter of all days. And thus far 6 completed "Crocolisks in the City" quests have yielded zero non-combat pets, so they are unlikely to be a common drop.

Anyone else noticed improved or otherwise rewards?

  17. Oberweiss <Moderator>, 2 years ago:

I haven't noticed any particular change to the distribution of "good loot" as a reward to the fishing contest, aside from the increased gold. I'm doing the daily (on US-PVE) on 2 characters, and between them I've gotten 3 rare items (hat, gem, recipe). I haven't gotten anything of note in the past few days.

The +100 lures and elixirs of water walking are the most common rewards that I've received.

As for the crocolisks, I agree that it'll be difficult trying to get all four (or even one). The chance you'll get one has to be exceptionally low.

The information on wowhead and warcraftpets suggests that 1 (Muckbreath) is available only from "Crocolisks in the City" while the other 3 (Toothy, Chuck, and my personal favorite Snarly) come from any of the other fishing dailies. Wowhead notes a different item ID for the Bag of Fishing Treasures obtained from the Crocs in the City quest compared to the one you get from the other quests.

  18. Gummo <The Pacifist>, 2 years ago:

I still think the loot drop rate is too high; I got another weather-beaten fishing hat. Compared to how much fishing you need to do to get the lucky fishing hat, the daily fishing quest is giving it away. The STV contest is only once a week, and you have to fish for hours to have a decent chance at a +fishing catch. The fishing dailies feel like a few minutes a day for a couple of weeks should get it.

I can't complain too loudly though, my level 37 will need to buy fishing beer and water walking pots from other players for a long time.

  19. Stephenn <Angler>, 2 years ago:

I'm just guessing here, but I'd say that Blizzard ups the drop rate on the PTRs for testing purposes and that when 2.4 goes live it will be more difficult to get the really good items from the quests.

That's what happened with the cooking dailies during 2.3 testing. I got all of the new recipes during the test. However, my same character on the normal servers still doesn't have the cake recipe.

Has anyone seen the Felbood Fillet quest yet? That's the only one that I haven't seen yet.

  20. Katura <Angler>, 2 years ago:

in relation to the new fishing hat i think possibably you forget that the hat isn't actually very important.. yes its got good stamina.. to give you another hits survivability if something attacks you whilst fishing but basically all it is a free +75 lure for when you run out of the sharpened hooks. the hat doesn't give a fishing bonus so is in essence worth alot less than the lucky fishing hat

EDIT: what i'm trying to say is that finally the people who bother to fish and enjoy doing the dailies etc are finally getting something worth their time
