[Fishing] Fishing for trunks in Lake Mirkfallon (and a loophole closed??)

  1. By Kylkiluut <Community Organizer> 5 months ago

I spend a lot time with my lowbie characters fishing Mirkfallon Lake for trunks in which I hope to find Weather Beaten Journals. A trick I used to use (see "I know a fishing secret" post) allowed me to loot a trunk and if a Weather Beaten Journal was inside, the journal would remain in the trunk and I could sell the trunk + journal for a pretty good price.

Well... I think something has changed in the last week or so.

I sent my lvl 20 character fishing Mirkfallon last night and got a journal from the first trunk I fished. So I 'learned' the Find Fish 'spell' which would then allow my little trick to work.

I fished 12 trunks but no journal. OK, bad luck, I suppose.

So tonight, I spent about 1 hour 40 minutes and fished 16 trunks. No journal. If the odds are 25% that a trunk has the journal, then the chance that 28 trunks would not have one is infinitesimally small. Even if the chance was 10%, the odds would still be way less than 1% that I wouldn't find a journal.

This has all happened in the last few days so either:
    1) I am INCREDIBLY unlucky
    2) Blizz patched or hot-fixed this little loop-hole :(
    3) Or remotely, a lvl 20 has less of a chance than a lvl 30 (which I usually am when I fish Mirkfallon); but I don't think this is it.

Any other ideas? Or confirmation of loophole fix?

Here is a screen pic of tonight's adventure:

Dang! This really ticks me off!

Actually, if the chance is 10% to find a journal in a Mirkfallon Lake trunk, the chance of not finding one after 28 tries is still 5.28% (0.9^28). If the chance is 25%, not finding one after 28 tries is 0.03% (0.75^28).

But yes, I think Blizzard fixed it.

Well... to me, 0.03% is infinitesimally small. :)

But yeh... 5% is bigger than 1%. :)

    But I'm still ticked!

The journals are like outland BoP trade skill recipes in that you can't see them if you've already learned the skill. I found this out the hard way on the day of the 2.3 patch. I had been stock piling crates (unopened) since I heard about the fishing book in the hopes of getting a journal as soon as I logged in after the patch. I opened the 10 or so curious crates I'd saved and sure enough four contained journals. I removed all the loot from the crates except the journals (since they're BoP, but the crates are not), then I took out one journal to learn it myself. When I opened another crate so I link it in guild chat and ask if anyone wanted one the crate just disappeared.

I have since discovered that the crates you catch can still contain journals, you just can't see them. If you send the crates to an alt who does not know the fish finding skill, but does have fishing trained you can find out which crates contain journals. I do not know if you have to leave the crates unopened for it to contain a journal, but it would not surprise me if opening it set the loot in the chest.

    Hope this helps you.

    Thanks.

What I 'remember' is that even if you had the fishing skill AND had learned the 'Find Fish' skill, that character could loot the trunk and if the trunk had the journal, the trunk (and journal) would remain in inventory. If there was no journal, the trunk disappears after looting. Another player could then open the trunk, extract the journal, and learn the skill. This doesn't seem to work anymore. The trunk ALWAYS disappears with a character who has the learned 'Find Fish' skill.

But now I suspect I could be 'remembering' wrong. I'll check again with:
    1. Characters who don't have the fishing skill
    2. Characters with a fishing skill but have not learned 'Find Fish'
    3. Characters wtih fishing skill, and have learned 'Find Fish'

Although I have convinced myself that #3 will never see another journal. (never = 28 tries, in my case)

The goal (in my case) is to locate trunks which still contain the journal and sell them to others. How else am I gonna make a living??

I think I better turn Autoloot off; sometimes 'stuff' happens. :)

    Bah!

A great evening at Mirkfallon Lake: 13 trunks in 42 minutes!

But... sent them to an alt who didn't have the fishing skill. He opened every one; no journal. :(

I'm beginning to think you may only find a journal IF you have the fishing skill, and then when you find it, it becomes soul-bound. That would seem to defeat my little scheme.

Contrary findings are more than welcome! :)

Hello! quthar is right about the way the Journal works. You just need to send the trunks to an alt that has Fishing skill trained but hasn't learned Find Fish. If there's a Journal in there, the alt will be able to see it.

    Happy fishin'!

But does it become soulbound then just by 'looking' and not 'looting'? That is the critical question for anyone who wants to sell them to others.

Today I fished up a mithril-bound trunk that didn't disappear when looted. I mailed it to an alt with a low Fishing skill that does not have the Find Fish skill yet. I was able to see the Weather-Beaten Journal in the trunk using that alt. I then mailed it to an alt with no Fishing skill. I could not see anything in the trunk with that alt. I mailed it back to the alt with the low Fishing, and the book was still there. The book appears to bind on looting, not on looking.

    Ah, thanks, very helpful!

I took the final step yesterday, and mailed the "empty" trunk to a Guildmate with a 108 Fishing skill. She was able to loot the Journal from the trunk and use it to gain her Find Fish skill. She's very hapy, and so am I...I fished up another one last night at Mirkfallon. :)

My boyfriend has found several in Stonetalon too ^-^
The floating wreckage found there is almost never fished on our server, and it doesn't take long to fish it all up. He learned find fish and traded an "empty crate" to me a couple days later after we figured out there might be a Weather-Beaten Journal in one of them, and there was.

I have been fishing Mirkfallon Lake for the past week trying to get the journals for two of my characters. Of all the hours that I have put in, I haven't caught even one trunk! Is there a certain spot I should try, has the chance of catching a trunk decreased in Mirkfallon Lake, or what?! I'm desperate! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Philbo86

Are you fishing from pools? Wreckage pools in particular, but any Sagefish schools will give some trunks too. It might take a while to find a journal, but you should catch trunks quickly.

I never saw any pools of floating wreckage while I was fishing at Mirkfallon Lake, so I decided to head over to the Cragpool Lake area. All that was there were oil spills, so I decided to fish those for the heck of it. After the oil spills disappeared, a bunch of floating wreckage showed up and I caught probably 15 watertight trunks and one journal! Thanks for the help!

I don't fish Mirkfallon Lake near as much as I used to (my alts are slowly getting past that stage :) ) but I have been there a few times in the last week.

Each time, I seem to get about the same ratio of Sagefish Pools to Floating Wreckage pools: about 8 to 1.

I have gone long spells (perhaps 15+ pools) without seeing the Floating Wreckage and I have also seen three Wreckage Pools in a row in Mirkfallon.

I suspect you've just been a bit unlucky but I'll go back and fish it a bit more. I can always use more sagefish. :)
