[Fishing] Fishing in 4.0.1 - Sometimes no catch

I've had a look at the FAQs here, and at the Blizzard forums, and thought I might get some shared experience before trundling off to submit a bug report.

I've starting fishing on a lvl 80 toon that hasn't done much fishing before. I'm following the leveling guide, so I'm out at Mulgore, where fish should be relatively easy to catch, even at skill level 50.

However, I'm noticing that sometimes I'm not making a catch at all. I thought WotLK changes were that every cast should result in something, even if it's just junk. And at those low levels, a successful catch should result in a skill point. However, every 10 casts or so (I haven't been writing it down, but perhaps I might), I seem to not catch anything at all.. there's no error about no fish on the hooks, there's just no catch, and no skill point.

Has anyone else noticed this, or should this be expected for 4.0.1 and Cataclysm (when it is released)?

I've seen reports of this on the official bug forums, such as this. I routinely miss catches on test realms due to increased ping time, so that might be an explanation, especially in the first day after a patch, when the servers tend to run a little slower. Or it could be a more serious problem.

I did a little bit more fishing after the realms came back up, and latency might have something to do with it. I'm in Australia, and I'm about to hit the sack, but I'll try again tomorrow night, and take a bit more notice of when I get no catch (i.e. is it at the end of the timer).

For prosperity, it happened at the following skill points: 55, 62, 67, 69, 72, 81, 84, 86x2, 89, 90, 93. Since some of those later skill points require 2 catches to skill up, you could say the frequency is more consistent with the earlier missed catches.

Also, I should note there was very little junk. At skill 80, I proceeded up to Thunder Bluff.

Eitherway, it's not a good sign for fishing. I'll add my findings to the linked forum article, when I can determine if the null catch is happening consistently at the end of the timer, or not.

It's NOT latency. My latency is near-perfect, and I'm having this issue trying to fish up mudskunks in ZG. My fishing skill is at 301, and two of seven casts in Muddy Churning Water pools came up with no fish, no junk, no anything.

Are your empty casts happening when the the bobber jumps right at the end of the 17second cast time? That's what I'm noticing for mine.

My latency is 514ms (at the moment), though it could be that Blizzard are cutting the reaction time for the bobber short with the end of the Fishing aura. The bobber aura probably needs to be let to stick around for the whole second, or whatever reaction time they usually give.

Going to add my thoughts to the WoW forum thread, the try to post an in game ticket (it was causing the game to crash last night).

My skill is at 450 plus pole & hat and 100 lure and I've noticed it as well wherever I'm fishing. It's odd though because I'm not able to put any stats to it...so far it seems totally random from twice in a row to once in an hour and less. I thought at first it was just me...or maybe the earthquakes.

Fishing has DEMONSTRABLY changed in 4.0, despite the lack of ANY patch notes stating they were intended. I'm salty so I've fished more than I care to remember. I also have as close to perfect latency as is possible without living in a Blizzard data center (constantly under 50ms). I did notice one or two missed catches, so they're probably possible.

But what I've noticed most of all is that catches used to be possible at one of only three points during a cast. Around 12 seconds, then 8 seconds, then 2.5 seconds remaining on the bobber (according to pitbull's cast bar). It seems that now a bite is possible at any point during the 17 second cast. The majority of my bites are around the halfway point (7-10), but I have noticed several bites at under 1 second remaining on the bobber. What I'm guessing is that the apparent "missed catches" are just happening at the very last tenth of a second (for me, maybe in the last half second for others with higher latency), and therefore not registering.

The only time I will ever fish again, now or in the future, is for feasts. So it's not a big deal to me, but it has definitely changed. I just googled to make sure I wasn't going crazy, found this thread, and thought the shared experience might be helpful to other fisherpeople.

I ended up submitting a GM ticket and it came back as a known issue. So at least that's something, and I'm not going nuts.

First post, but I thought I'd share my two coppers worth.
I've fished from 25 to 420 skill after patch 4.0.1 hit on an old toon, and I also noticed that very often the bobber would splash with less than a second left on the channeling timer.
This would routinely lead to me missing the catch, but what works for me is to click the bobber when there is somewhere between 2 and 1 second left on the timer, and I will always catch it.
I'm also at a steady 35 ms latency.

I've been having this problem as well, but I guess you can just keep fishing in an area for a slightly longer time.
