[Fishing] Fishing Skill-Ups in Northrend

  1. KaliopeLlane <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Hey El and other Beta Fisherfolk!

I briefly tried fishing twice in the last week, the first time was prior to the latest patch and the second time was yesterday. For my first attempt, I caught ten fish from a couple of swarms I saw nearby. I got one skill point after the tenth fish, which was pretty much in line with my expectations. Yesterday I decided to fish a bit again, mostly to collect items for cooking some of the drop recipes a friend had looted. This time when I fished, my skill points got strange:

1st skill point: 8 successful casts
2nd skill point: 5 successful casts
3rd skill point: 4 successful casts
4th skill point: 4 successful casts
5th skill point: 4 successful casts

I don't know about anyone else, but I was pretty surprised by this. I realize it's a small sampling, but it seems pretty unlikely that it was an error. My first thought was that they broke something in the latest patch. I checked El's write-up about WotLK fishing to see if it matched my experience and it did not. So I thought I'd post here to see if others have experienced the same thing.

Just for reference, I was using my Fishing Hat from the daily quests for a lure (forgot to bring some from Live) and Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole with an Eternium Line. My fishing skill is capped out at 375. I was fishing in the Howling Fjord, various spawn pools not too far from the starting town.

    Interesting.

My skill-up values were from the build that introduced Grand Master training. There were a lot of fishing-related tweaks in the mid-week build, so this may have been changed as well. What's curious is that the pattern isn't consistent. I wonder if the skill-up mechanic has changed, perhaps to reflect where you fish or what you catch?

    Something has changed recently...

I just did some testing/info gathering in Vengeance Landing. Skillups were at a rate of 1 point per 4-5 successful catches, at skill levels 385-390.

  4. Gummo <The Pacifist>, 1 year ago:

The fast skill-ups may be just be temporary to test high-level fishing, if there's anything that needs high-level fishing to test...

  5. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 1 year ago:

I will keep on testing this, but so far it looks like the entire leveling curve has been altered dramatically: 1 to 225 skill only took 242 catches - at least half what was expected. As with everything in beta, it is hard to know if this is intended or not.

I'm leveling fishing right now atm, and I've noticed this as well. Going from 375 to 400 where I am at currently, I have not had a skillup take more than 6 casts. It seems to take 4-5 most of the time.

I /bug'd it in game, just in case it's a break in the system. It'll certainly make fishing more "accessible."

    Hello guys!
I don't know if it was mentioned already but I'd like to ask if grand master fishing trainer instantly makes your maximum fishing to 450 so you can reach 450 fishing on level 70 or you have to be level 80 to do that?
    Thanks in advance. :)

  9. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 1 year ago:

There is no level restriction on either Master or Grand Master training in Northrend. So you can reach 450 fishing skill as low as level 35 (which is required for the 225-skill quest).

Faster skill-ups remain in the latest build: Looks like it was intended. Changes apply 1-450.

  10. Csirke4 <Salty>, 1 year ago:

Hmm so that means as soon as wotlk comes out ppl have to rush to the Grand Master fishing trainer to reach the Server first 450 skill achievement. :)

    Thanks a lot!

  11. Cozmic <Salty>, 1 year ago:

Is there still a Server first 450 fishing achievement? I thought they removed that.
And where about is the fishing trainer?

  12. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 1 year ago:

There is no title, but there is thought to still be a Feat of Strength for the first 450 angler. Feats just show up on the achievements screen - no title or points.

    Known trainers are listed here.

  13. Csirke4 <Salty>, 1 year ago:

    Ye it was here.

El, do you have any idea how it's fastest way to get 450 fishing?^^

  14. Cozmic <Salty>, 1 year ago:

I may do that as soon as I get the expansion since I won't be first to 80 I may try for cooking and fishing.

  15. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 1 year ago:

Here is the current beta skill-up table. 375 to 450 takes about 90 minutes.

If anyone can re-test even a part of the earlier stage of this on the PTRs, that would be very helpful (beta flagged accounts cannot get onto the PTRs). I suspect that this change will go live in patch 3.0, greatly speeding up leveling from 100 to 375.

  16. Gummo <The Pacifist>, 1 year ago:

I created a test toon on the PTR, just got her to level 10 so she can get fishing past 75. So far to 52 she's gone up a point every catch, as usual. Once I hit 75, the skill-up tables diverge:

    Old skillups
    Possible new

Also, KaliopeLlane's skill-ups would suggest that fishing is programmed with a count-down counter that is reset when your fishing skill goes up a point. That's why the first point still took 8 catches to get, but after that it was 4 or 5.

  17. Gummo <The Pacifist>, 1 year ago:

I can confirm that in the current 3.0.2 PTR, fishing 1-100 gets a skill-up every catch, which agrees with the beta and is faster than the current version of WoW (2.4.3 or whatever it is).
