It's unfortunate that Blizzard made it so easy to catch this pet. So many botters just sitting on the docks for 4-6 hours. Really pisses me off to see them hit the achievement then mindlessly continue to fish until the players decides to return.
Also at about 1200 casts with no rat yet :(
I'm at 2,600 casts, no rat. Two of my guildies got it in under 30 casts and I've seen four other players getting it. So frustrating. I do however have a few hundred magic eaters...
I finally got my rat today here are my stats:

Well over 2,000 casts, and I still don't have my Giant Sewer Rat. On the beta, I got it in under 100 casts :(. I think above the fact that I've spent so much time fishing in the sewers of Dalaran, the fact that I just got 2 Imbued Vials in row at a 0.2% chance to drop upsets me the most. My luck is pretty much horrible - not sure how I'm going to get the one that didn't get away.

hi, dont have stats but do have the rat. really happy with him, because i (still) have a pet rat IRL. :)
think i fished for him for 4-5 hours in total, also got my fishing skill up to 450.
I got my rat on my 4th cast, yet the one that didnt get away took like 4000 casts... I love rng

I think so far U have worked hardest for him.
I didn't count, but I know I haven't spent much time in the sewers so I'd estimate that I caught the sewer rat in under 100 casts.
I'm really happy to have caught him as I have two pet rats in real life and now I have two in game as well (the other being whiskers from children's week :D)

Most of the time was spent fishing at Cantrips and Crows.
Kiena, I think it might be something to do with the area your fishing in...
I tried in the northern part of the Under belly & got it within 5 casts.
In The southern part, it took me over 5 hours.
I was wearing all the fishing gear with +stats on,
including my Darkwood Fishing Pole.
I don´t have fish buddy, but i have around 400 Magic eater... so i guess i broke the 2000 fishes :(
450 fishing +2enchant +20 pole +100 lure = 572 and no fishing going away
Hoping now i will get it...
