Any idea if fishing the "Crockolisks in the City" effect helps here? I've been fishing the sewers off and on for over a year, caught him with what was then my main after a full week and close to 800 casts. Got the fishing bug with my new main, and fished on and off over several months, probably around 600 casts. Today, fishing the sewers with the quest, caught him in under 40 casts. One experience is entirely anecdotal, but I was wondering if anyone else had this happen also.

Finally finished this, my last fishing achievement after various attempts since WotLK ^^
Stats from this attempt:
Dalaran, Cantrips & Crows: 3180 total
Sewer Carp: 55.1%
Magic Eater: 24.2%
Crystal Vial: 10.6%
Drowned Rat: 5.5%
Partially Eaten Fish: 4.6%
Giant Sewer Rat: <0,1%
Reading up before the attempt I saw 1:1000 chance on the page here and this seemed to tally pretty well with other catch stats posted. When I hit 3000 however I checked Wowhead which gives a 0.03% (1:3000) which has worked out about right for me.
I only mention it because I had the expectation (as far as one can with RNG) of a target for the former. Having a more realistic likely goal eased my grind impatience somewhat.
My final tally including previous attempts must be approaching 6-8k catches.
I am currently fishing for the rat in Dalaran sewers.
I have a base fishing skill of 525. I have a Fishing hat (+5), a Kaluak Fishing Pole (+30) and a Fishing enchantment on it (+2), raising my skill to 562, and I still catch grey junk (Drowned Rats and Partially Eaten Fish).
What is worse, even when I use a Sharpened Fishing Hook (+100), I still catch the same junk at skill 637.
How is that possible?
I am at Cantrips and Crows in the Dalaran sewers.

1500 on the sewer rat with no luck...
2800 on the dark herring with no luck...
Wowhead gives a drop rate for the Giant Sewer Rat of around 0.03% or 1:3000, so don't feel too bad. Took me just over 3k to get mine. Keep at it, it's worth it in the end for the achievement and pet. GL.
