[Contests] Kalu'ak Fishing Derby Results

  1. Gummo <The Pacifist>, 2 years ago:

    Congrats Absalom; considering your win, I wonder if the algorithm ignores individual players, and is something like this:

    Server picks a random number X, say, from 150-250

    After X pygmy suckerfish have been caught by all players, each catch has a chance of being the shark (maybe based on player fishing skill).

    When the winner is announced, a new X is selected (this is only based on my bad luck in getting a shark after the contest).

    It might be useful to check time-of-win versus realm population; if the algorithm is like my suggestion, realms with lower populations will have later wins.

    Win: yes (10th overall win, first kaluak +9 STV's)
    Skill: 575 (arcanite pole w/ eternium line, weather beaten hat, hat lure +75)
    Faction: horde
    Casts: 16? (maybe 17?)
    Suckerfish: 9
    Caught Shark: just off the rocks near the docks at Venture Bay
    Turn In Time: 2:08

    I started on the Dragonspine Tributary at a Dragonfin Angelfish pool right across from where the river comes out from Grizzly Hills, then headed east along that river. Hit 2 more pools on the way to the fork then followed it south to Venture Bay. Passed like 5 pools during that, they were all being fished, then found an unoccupied pool right next to the docks by the boats, an alli was fishing one of the pools right next to me on the docks. First cast in that pool, pull out an Imperial Manta Ray with the shark with it.

    Took the boots, finally freeing up my hearth from Booty Bay... still haven't decided on a new hearth location. Maybe a second Dalaran to go with my ring?

    Win: :( no
    Skill: 450 (Bone Fishing Pole +30, sharpened fish hook +100); 580 in total
    Faction: Alliance
    Casts: 14-15 (or so by the time the announcement was hollered about who won)
    Suckerfish: 6
    Caught Shark: ...i said no, why must you taunt me by asking me again? :( (forgot to ask the winning player)
    Turn in time: 14:07

    Add'l bits and bobs: not really, was my first time doing the Angler spiel in Dalaran, I liked it. Good luck to other Anglers!

  4. Shalura <Angler>, 2 years ago:

    2nd week I didn't win, but this is the first time in 4 tries (2 on the PTR) where I actually saw a yell that announced the winner. It was Qatar on Anvilmar, I didn't get a chance to talk to him but his armory shows 450 skill.
    My skill: 450+160.
    Fishing in Howling Fjord, there seemed to be fewer pools than in Borean Tundra but I wasn't getting the bobber dips with no catch bug so it may have worked out even.
    Winning time: 8 minutes.

  5. Bunnifluff <Angler>, 2 years ago:

    Win: yes :)
    Skill: 595
    Faction: Alliance
    Casts: 21
    Suckerfish: forgot, maybe around 12
    Caught Shark: in Fangtooth Herring pool in lake just south of Fort Wildevar in Howling Fjord
    Turn in time: was too excited to notice

    I took the ring--great for the shammy I am leveling

    Now to finish my Salty title . . .

  6. Gamal <Angler>, 2 years ago:

    Win: no
    Skill: 505+100
    Faction: Alliance
    Casts: don't know
    Suckerfish: 9
    Caught Shark: no
    Turn in time: 14:06

    I'm very disapointed in this so-called derby. All that matters is RNG. As the winner told me, he/she wasn't prepared for the contest and started fishing minutes after the announcement and got the shark on his/her second cast.

    no reason to win more than 2 STV's except to be just an a**hat. not a cool stat man.

    there's nothing that says i can't still compete in one of the only interesting competitions in the game. i like to see it as defending my Saltyness, there's nothing that says i -have- to let other people win...

    letting people win... that's unsportsmanlike conduct.

    There is nothing to say you can't, but there are only 52 chances in the year for everyone on the server to try and get a chance at the title and items. So winning more then twice on the same character is being unsportsmanlike.

    Actually most guilds I've been in it would get you kicked, or the guild blacklisted. YMMV.

    Win: No
    Effective Fishing Skill 450 + 35 (Jeweled Fishing Pole w/ line) + 80 (Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat + on use effect) = 565
    Faction Alliance
    Successful Casts 20
    Pygmy Suckerfish Caught 16
    Where Shark Caught Dunno
    Turn-in Time 14:08

    As mentioned above, this is even more RNG than the BB contest. At least with BB, it can make a difference if you prepare for it.

    * Win yes
    * Effective Fishing Skill 605
    * Faction Alliance
    * Successful Casts 22
    * Pygmy Suckerfish Caught 12
    * Where Shark Caught: Howling fjord coastal
    * Turn-in Time 14:08

    Awesome new boots im a happy gnome now!

  13. Ninkosen <Angler>, 2 years ago:

    * Win No
    * Effective Fishing Skill 620
    * Faction Horde
    * Successful Casts ~25
    * Pygmy Suckerfish Caught 6-7 (when I'm not lucky I do it real good)
    * Where Shark Caught:
    * Turn-in Time 14:05 (winner alliance for the 3rd consecutive time)

  14. Gummo <The Pacifist>, 2 years ago:

    Week three.
    Win: No
    Effective Fishing Skill: 575
    Faction: Alliance
    Successful Casts: 16
    Pygmy Suckerfish: 10
    Where Shark Caught: Unknown, won by Horde
    Turn-in Time: 2:04 (contest started at 1:58)

  15. Renetta <Salty>, 2 years ago:

    * Win (yes/no): No
    * Effective Fishing Skill (include bonuses from gear/lures): 590
    * Faction (Horde/Alliance) Alliance
    * Successful Casts (count up the non-Suckerfish from the start of the contest until the shark catch) (5 crystalize water, 54 Monsterbelly, 3 Imp Manta Ray, 83 Moonglow Cuttlefish, 7 Reinforced Crates) = 152 (*)
    * Pygmy Suckerfish Caught (from the start of the contest until the shark catch) 80
    * Where Shark Caught (pool/water type and zone) Never.
    * Turn-in Time (to Elder Clearwater) Stopped fishing after 57 minutes (when lure expired)
    * Anything Unusual (for example, low level win or interesting strategy)

    (*) I fished in two Borean Man-O-War pools, they returned either nothing or just a sole pigmyfish. I wonder if those are viable for the contest given that they do have pigmyfish in them. I was unaware that these pools apparently don't contain the man-o-war anymore. The two pools were at the boundary of Borean Tundra and Dragonblight. This means that my effective "successful" cast count is actually somewhat higher, maybe by 8.

    Overall my spot was good (Frozen Sea, south of BT), lots of others but very efficient still for the first 7 minutes. Winner was announced after that time. Then there was a respawn drought for about 2 minutes and then it picked up again to a fast pace as most left after the winner had been announced. Around 2-3 people stayed around to fish some more.

  16. Ninkosen <Angler>, 2 years ago:

    * Win No
    * Effective Fishing Skill 620
    * Faction Horde
    * Successful Casts who cares?
    * Pygmy Suckerfish Caught 14
    * Where Shark Caught:
    * Turn-in Time 14:05 (winner alliance for the 4th consecutive time), exact time 270seconds.
    * Anything Unusual The guy doesn't even have 450 fishing, just 400... that's your "fishing skil contest" El...

    Another thing unusual ? Yeah 3h10min of fishing since the start of the event. 0.00000000000000 shark caught. Total Pigmy fishes caught ? Between 200 and 300. I cannot even catch one during the full hour, let alone catch one during the 3 first minutes... I can't do it, can you?

    And as if it wasn't even enought there was 500ms to 1000ms delay in Howling fjord (I wouldn't be surprised if there is instances like naxx, ulduar and all that shit on the same server as this zone, which explain why there is lag here but not even in dalaran, which is dumb), with of course the green light on my character panel....so I let you guess what is the result when you have 500ms between every throw , every loot, every mount cast.... I caught 35% less fish than last time...and worst but not least, I couldn't even enjoy it
    They prefer putting the server load on a 70-72 zone, since thoses people just bought wotlk, they are paying their subscription (a fresh one most probably, so they are stuck 30 days at least before they can decide to quit, which by that time, let's hope the lag is gone..), so they can be bothered, while a zone like durotar is golden, since newcomers start here, so no lag here, that would be wasting money and suscribers...
    And of course ppl in instances probably have GOLDEN priority server load wise than the poor dumb guy doing kalu'ak derby, power to the raiders all the damn way, they choose the time of the event, they choose who win, and whoever, whatever, whenever.

    Week four.
    Win: No
    Effective Fishing Skill: 575
    Faction: Alliance
    Successful Casts: 7
    Pygmy Suckerfish: 5
    Where Shark Caught: Unknown (Alliance won)
    Turn-in Time: 2:05 (contest started at 1:58)

  18. gork869 <Angler>, 2 years ago:

    * Win YES! (2 time STV Winner)
    * Effective Fishing Skill 500+ (max base +arcanite pole no lures)
    * Faction (Horde/Alliance) Alliance
    * Where Shark Caught Fangtooth Pools In the 'Ford
    * Turn-in Time (to Elder Clearwater) 8.5 minutes

    * Anything Unusual

    Didn't Use lures (maybe weather beaten hat at start for a bit)
    Took Forever to load Dal. Ran to Questgiver, took about 25 seconds for him to rez. After I won, someone whispered they were hearthing when I turned in.

    Extra Gear:
    X-Ray Specs
    Find Fishing Skill
    Rocket Boots X-treme
    Alliance Hearth At Inn
    Low Graphics Profile (made pools near impossible to see by eye)

    This Contest needs to be shored up and made fun like the STV contest. Extra loot after winner, and something other than luck and random lag to decide winner.

  19. turboteckel <Angler>, 2 years ago:

    Win: Hell yeah!

    Effective Fishing Skill (include bonuses from gear/lures): 450 (+115) Weather-beaten Fishing Hat lure and Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole

    Faction: Horde

    Successful Casts (count up the non-Suckerfish from the start of the contest until the shark catch): 18

    Pygmy Suckerfish Caught (from the start of the contest until the shark catch): 13

    Where Shark Caught (pool/water type and zone): Manta Ray Pool southern part of Howling Fjord

    Turn-in Time (to Elder Clearwater): 14:06 (6 minutes)

    Anything Unusual (for example, low level win or interesting strategy): Nothing unusual, just located a row of pools and went along them as I fished them empty.

    Graphic settings all at low except for Particle Density.
    All large add-ons turned off.
    Hearthstone at the Legerdemain Inn in Dalaran.
    Told my guildies beforehand that I would give everyone who was online 50g if I would win (There were 12 online).

    Waiting for Dalaran and especially the questgiver to finally load took what seemed like two hours.

  20. Ninkosen <Angler>, 2 years ago:

    4 hours and 15 minutes, at max skill (up to 620) without catching a shark yet... I don't even know if my account is not flagged so I don't catch it, or my race, or my haircut, who know what else...I know someone who caught 5 (5 shark yes, FIVE), in 30minutes... sure right....and if he didnt loot more than 5 it's because the guy stopped there, hillarious, he caughts so many shark that he stopped... at 14:40 or so... i got the news...as I see it, that guy triggered something that would allow him to loot the shark very very easily... at 2 it's great, at 3 you feel lucky, 4 wow there is a god after all, at 5 there is no god left, only some shallow blizzard code, that is fucking everybody else....
    This include the turn-ins, which obivously takes a lot of time when your hearthstone is not up...last but not least, that guy had no flying mount...
    And to end that wonderful day, the guy who won on my server, had alrdy won 2 weeks ago...yeah sure talk about morons, unfairness, etc...

    Maybe at the start of the contest, account are randomly flagged with an increase % of looting the shark, which explain why this guy looted 5 of them in 30 min, and if the contest would last 3 hours, and he kept fishing endlessly he would drop 40 of them or so... thats the only explanation...

    The guy fished 10 times total, and caught 5 shark, there must be a bug somewhere...same bug that prevent other ppl to loot the shark, the loot of that thing is shallow, as far as i'm concerned there is no droprate, it's sorta a give away...

    I demand that blizzard releaze the code of that shark, and says why, when, and how somebody can loot the shark....there is no droprate it's lies....

    And i know my sayings are crazy, but you can't explain crazy things with saying "blabla the droprate has 1% drop"....what if your race or your faction increase that % of drop ? that would explain why the same guy won 2 times in 3 weeks...
    as long as it's not a flat droprate (and I'm convinced it's not) then it can be anything....

    I play Kalu'ak on a server with less than 2000 people and one with more than 30000, they both win in the same amount of time...5min-8min, which proove it is NOT a flat droprate (sometime the lop pop finishes before the high pop...), on that low pop server there is probably less than 20 ppl fishing every week... maybe that guy who won 2 times on that low pop, has a race that gives him increased chance to win...maybe his character name start with the rigth letter

    Another example : what if, each week one of the fishing zone is choosen randomly and the shark makes is tour there, so more chance (or only) to get it in that zone...

    I'll repeat myself a last time : As long as it's not a flat droprate, it can be anything, and It's not a flat droprate.
