I had a most unexpected surprise on Saturday, I won the Kalu'ak derby. Since I regard this as lottery more than a competition and given the odds against winning, I had not prepared myself to actually pick a prize. With little time to consider, I went for the ring. I don't expect to get this lucky twice in one lifetime and I really am wondering if it was the better choice.
What would the rest of you pick: Dread Pirate Ring or Boots of the Bay? And why would you pick it?
I have a lot of alts, but I still think I'd go for the boots. I'm a sucker for items that teleport you to specific places.

Because I know I wouldn't resist temptation and I'd grab the boots to satisfy Leonie's vanity, I don't do the derby with that toon. The ring makes infinitely more sense if you till have alts to level, like I do.
But dang ... the boots ...
The ring, because you never know what character you will be playing in the far future. All it takes is an expansion or even a patch to bring major changes to kill all the fun of something you might think is your main forever. Or outside events/boredom/change of pace etc. I know diehards from beta/classic who were "warriors for life" or whatever who did 180s years later.
I'm a big fan of BOA, I wish they would go a lot farther and just have one 'super avatar' that keeps all achievements (and more) that can go to different race/class combos depending on what you want to do.
The boots might seem to really help on the contest, but with the cooldown you either have to travel there anyways in advance, or temp set hearth at the inn after using the boots. Depending on zone changes in Cat they could be quite handy, but I rather doubt it...a dalaran 2.0/shatt 3.0 is a given.
Of course, you only need one unique BOA ring so if your luck is amazing choose boots every time after.
(Theres no "contest" in this contest, a few weeks back someone won it by accident the first few mins not even fishing in pools. I won after starting a good 5 minutes late due to an inconvenient phonecall I could not dodge)
I tried the Kalu'ak derby for the first time today. I stayed in the Borean Tundra and Frozen Sea area. I didn't catch a shark, even though I fished for 45 minutes. My fishing is at 448 and I used the +75 from the hat as well as whatever the jeweled fishing pole gives. I never heard a winner announced and finally got bored. Are you supposed to be able to hear the winner announced from anywhere? After looking at more details of the derby here, it looks like the whole thing should have been over with in no more than 15 minutes! Did I do something wrong, or what?
Last time I checked, the announcement could not be heard in the Frozen Sea. I assume it is supposed to be possible to hear the announcement everywhere in Northrend.
I m a Horde I think I l never win te kalu ak fihing derby ,because I never have time to get sharphened fishing hook and also the sunreaver sanctuary is very farr from the eventide
Looking forward to starting this, as well as the Extravaganza on my completely new character on a completely new server. Under level 40, yet i run around dalaran fliipin' my Titanium Seal of Dalaran and Nat Pagle's Boots.
Not to mention 450 Fishing and a complete handmade outfit.

Quick question, IS there much of a contest? I'd love to get the achievement out of the way, as well as have the best fishing boots available, i personally hate BoA gear, ruined everything for the low levels.
As a level 38 i plan to fish in Winter's Breath Lake, any other ideas?
People know me round dalaran already, i need something new to show off. ;)
