[Contests] Kalu'ak Fishing Derby

    Also, from their Twitter feed:

Preparations for a fishing derby in Northrend are well underway by the Kalu’ak. Up for grabs - a new heirloom ring!

  2. Gizel <Salty>, 3 years ago:

As far as I understand, multiple ppl can catch the shark and deliver it in Dalaran.
So by my knowledge, everyone that lags in Dalaran are in a great disadvantage for this contest...
Especially as it is an northrend 'thing' atleast 200 persons will participate.

If the turn-in NPC is located near the fountain, the Alliance have an advantage as their inn is closer to the fountain then the horde.

I hope they place the NPC near the Underbelly inn.

    Edit:
I hope you can not stand on the NPC like the daily dungeon quest giver.
As I suspect 50 taurens with their mammoths standing on the NPC the first day moving little around to make the name-plates move nicely over/each other.

  3. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 3 years ago:

    Thanks for the updates.

Some information is lurking on Ady's database - Blacktip Shark (1 hour duration, BoP) leading to either Soul of the Kalu'ak or Better Luck Next Time. The first quest rewards an unknown finger OR foot item, plus 175 rep. The second quest is also flagged daily, and rewards the Bag of Fishing Treasures and 125 rep. Logically the first quest is the winner, and second is for everyone else. That implies the finger item is the heirloom, and thus limited to the winner. Also that the winning items are all new.

    Speculation:

The shark sounds like it will be rarely found wherever Pygmy Suckerfish are found. Meaning not Dalaran. Probably in proportion to Pygmy Suckerfish. Meaning far more likely from pools, except pools in Crystalsong Forest. This would be logical, since it forces anglers away from Dalaran. Greater choice of locations means less PvP emphasis, but flight was always going to dilute that. Of course it could appear in a new type of pool, but I suspect that would be too confusing/annoying for non-contestants.

The single catch would seem to place a lot more emphasis on luck. Logically the competition will be over in the first catch, since someone's going to get lucky. That would be a boring contest. So it might use the quest item drop mechanic - the longer you search for an item, the greater the chance of finding it - with almost no chance in the first few casts? Or perhaps I'm already assuming too much. The shark will transpire to be circling the pools. Or something.

Dalaran's lag will surely become an issue: I can already see the "I would have won, but the NPC took 30 seconds to appear" posts. While there is a risk that the NPC will be covered by Mammoths, that can happen in Booty Bay, and (in my experience) doesn't. I didn't read anything that implied the event would need to be started in Dalaran, merely that that's the destination for delivery.

I hope one of the rewards is new fishing boots, with water walking-equip effect on it ^_^

    Edit:
    Something like this (ilvl 200):

  5. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 3 years ago:

Fishing boots are somewhat logical, because there is no equivalent of Nat Pagle's Extreme Anglin' Boots available in Northrend.

  6. Grank <Salty>, 3 years ago:

I was very excited over the prospect of a new tournament until I read that the turn in was in Dalaran. When the difference between winning and losing STV is sometimes less than a second, why would they stick Elder Clearwater in the most lag-ridden place in the game?!

On the other hand, something that might mitigate this would be making the the chance of catching a Blacktip Shark so rare that it's improbable that any two players would hook one within 5 minutes of each other.

  7. Oakshadon <Angler>, 3 years ago:

I work every Sunday. So being able to try the fishing tourny I rarely get to try except for when I am on vacation. As the last 3 Sundays. Last week I missed winning by seconds. Guy won as I was hearthing back to BB. And today was terrible. I love fishing and the tourny is all I need to get my Salty title. If the new tourny is on a week night, I would at least be able to join in. Getting the Salty title would be so great. Course getting the fishing chair in the loot cards would be even better.

    Just FYI.

Out here in the Pacific Time Zone, we're currently observing the Daylight Savings program. In other words, we're 8 hours behind GMT, at least until early November when the program ends. This might just make it even more confusing.

So if you want to try the tournament this Wednesday on the PTR I suggest downloading the client now and logging in to figure out what the time difference is between the PTR and your time zone. That way you won't miss it.

Good luck to all the participants!

Sigh, Kiingy was too quick for me.

/want those boots. Although I kinda wish they'd come out with new fishing items to complete the set rather than just upgrade existing ones. Sucks that they've rendered Nat Pagle's boots obsolete (after you've won the new tourney of course, so won't be obsolete for most people I guess).

I do appreciate that they made a second reward worth trying for too. I don't think I've ever found a use for that Hook trinket from my second Stranglethorn win although it does sort of expand my fishing outfit even if it's not visible. Would be even cooler if it were a fishing ring. Moar fishing item slots pls! :D

  11. Thander <Salty>, 3 years ago:

Those boots will be nice for STV. Won't have to set hearth in Booty Bay anymore. I guess if you use the hearth you get 2 teleports for the contest.

I think its great they will be adding a second time to get Salty now. Through extreme luck I got Salty without much trouble, but I know how long and boring it can be. I still have never gotten the hat from STV after over 50 weeks.

    :)

I agree, wish they'd bring out new gear for the other slots.
Although I was hoping those boots had the water walking equip suggested by a poster above.

Sounds like you have to wait for him in Dalaran and get a quest from him first, then go fish and bring it back within the hour. I hope you don't have to get the quest first. I can see speeding up the process by having a 'lock friend waiting and summoning you to your fishing spot right after you get the quest. I have a feeling though it'll be one of those things you can only catch if you have the quest.

Gogo gadget Northrend Wormhole Generator! :)

If you do have to pick up the quest in Dalaran, I hope they put him up on the platform with Timear or something. Otherwise, besides the dummies just accidently standing on top of him, there will be people deliberately mammoth blocking him both before and after the quest starts.

The ring looks pretty spiffy, but I'd also like some different slots instead of new items for the same old slots. Like waders (legs) or a fishing vest (chest/shirt).

And where is the achievement for winning both STV and Northrend contests?

Anyone concerned about the cheapening of the salty title should sign the petition here: http://www.petitiononline.com/salty/petition.html
Please pass this along to any guild mates and other anglers you may know.

I'll keep my Master Angler achievement just the way it is. You can keep your "change".

  15. Anonymous <Unregistered>, 3 years ago:

is there a graphical picture of northrend pool locations anywhere?

  16. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 3 years ago:

A map of ever pool spawning location? I haven't seen one. There's no way to construct it from the data collected by sites like Wowhead or Thottbot, because the combat log never records the source (just "fishing"), and there are no common catches which are unique to pools (so no one fish that will reveal pool locations).

My perception is that the greatest concentration of pools is in The Frozen Sea near Borean Tundra. However, that area isn't good under pressure: When the Sea Turtle was new, I found that once several anglers were fishing there, a lot of time was spent flying around looking for fresh pools.

Places like Sholazar Basin or Howling Fjord simply have more options - which could be important during a contest. Of course, if the pools respawn very fast, a couple of the lakes (like Lake Indu'le in Dragonblight or Lake Kum'uya in Borean Tundra) may be possible to fish continually. Then there are other factors, like the value of the fish you catch.

Is there a petition to sign against irrational people flying off the handle? How is this cheapening? So now 104 people per year can get it instead of only 52? Whoopdy freakin' do.

Anyway it's a good bet that a lot of people going after this will already have won the Stranglethorn Vale contest. I know I'm going to be going for it, and I've won STV twice.

Don't forget that if it's truly RNG some of the winners will not get the title because they won't bother to go through with all the other achievements required for meta. And you're right, many of the winners will also be people who already won the STV contest. I really doubt we will actually see anywhere near 104 new Salties a year.

    This is depressing.
