[Contests] Kalu'ak Fishing Derby

  1. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 4 months ago:

I've started to write a Kalu'ak Fishing Derby Strategy guide. Please make suggestions. I'm sure I've missed a lot.

i could be blind but i didn't see the prices you would win if you win the contest (the boots and the ring).

  3. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 4 months ago:

Ah, that's on the first Kalu'ak Fishing Derby page. I should probably refer back more.

I don't think the Frozen Sea is part of the contest area. I didn't hear any of the announcements, and I fished from the pools for 25 minutes w/o catching a shark. After I moved back to Borean Tundra I kept getting bobber dips with no catch, or catching just a suckerfish and nothing else.

  5. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 3 months ago:

I've spoken to someone that claimed to catch a Blacktip Shark in The Frozen Sea. But I've also heard plenty of reports of not catching anything there. The shark should appear anywhere Pygmy Suckerfish appear.

Keep in mind that the catch is not guaranteed anywhere. The last 2 weeks I haven't seen any sharks, even fishing where I know the shark can be caught. Proving the shark cannot be caught somewhere is rather hard.

Lack of announcements is more interesting. That could be an oversight - The Frozen Sea is an unusual zone, and might not be on a "standard list" of Northrend zones. If the issue remains, it makes The Frozen Sea unattractive because you won't know when the contest has been won.

  6. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 3 months ago:

Today there were no announcements at the start in the Frozen Sea. Borean Man O' War School are also still buggy (often no fish is caught after the bobber splashes).

Curiously, 3 weeks with 75 fishing skill has still not caught a single shark - over 3 hours of the Derby. It's still possible that's just bad luck, but it's also increasingly possible that skill has some influence on the catch rate... The plot thickens.

    Missed it by that much.
Fishing on the coast of Borean Tundra with my hunter, caught a shark about 12 minutes after it started. Teleported back with my Kirin Tor ring, and got to Elder Clearwater just in time for "Better Luck next time". So I scrolled back up and the very first thing in my chat log after the joined channels was the announcement of the winner.

I was getting the bobber splash/no catch from the Imperial Manta Ray schools too. I have a theory about that though. If you have to catch a certain number of Pygmy Suckerfish before you can loot a blacktip shark (to keep it from being over in 30 seconds or so), that could be the shark coming up on the loot table, then being supressed. It does seem to be using up a "catch" from the pools.

After I got the shark on my Hunter with max fishing, I switched over to my Paladin with ~100 fishing in Sholazzar basin. I fished until the contest ended, almost 45 minutes, but I took a couple of breaks to make a sandwich and stuff. Anyway, didn't catch a shark, but I did get about 40 skill points. I was using a strong iron pole and no lures, only caught one junk item, from a cast that wasn't quite in a pool I guess.

Ok so I have heard that the Hand-in NPC for this quest is unfairly closer to alliance hearth points compared to Horde hearth points

Even if just by a little, this sucks because Dalaran is super laggy for a lot of players (I'd go so far as to day 50% of them) and anyone who has participated in the old stranglethorn contest can tell you that every second counts

True that anyone who REALLY wants to win will use camped people (including a warlock) to summon but the basic principal that this advantage exists is upsetting.

I've seen this mentioned on the WoW PTR and suggestion forums. Does anyone know if the NPCs position has changed from where he originally stood?

As a question to anyone else, would you think it would be more fair/better if the NPC was in a less populated and neutral spot like any of the Kalu'ak Cities (I likely place for a "Kalu'ak" Fishing Derby right?)

The latest "Better Luck Next Time" prize at ptr.wowhead.com now says it's a standard Bag of Fishing Treasures, so it's worth fishing up a shark even after the contest has been won.

A turn-in at a Kalu'ak town would make more sense, but it would doubtless be heavily camped by guilds. People have suggested putting the questgiver on one of the dock pylons in the Underbelly, so everyone can hearth to the same inn and it would be harder to block the questgiver.

Just use your Kirin Tor ring to port in. Don't forget to put the nitro boosts on your lucky fishin' boots. :)

D558: No location changes as of last Saturday.

Gummo: Interesting, although I need in-game confirmation. Initial data-mining showed the 2nd prize as a Bag of Fishing Treasures, which then changed. Wowhead's data for this may simply not be up to date. Regardless, a Blacktip Shark is not a guaranteed catch even after an hour of fishing - it seems like a waste of time, unless you absolutely have to maximize the number of bags you gain.

On a related note, I'm still very unsure about the role of skill. 4 weeks of fishing the full hour of the Derby at 75 skill never caught a shark. In contrast over-geared El caught 3 sharks, each within 30 minutes of fishing. Unfortunately I simply don't have enough evidence for that to be a statistically robust conclusion. It could be chance. But since wearing fishing gear doesn't slow you down, I suspect I will be... Precisely the sort of voodoo I hate.

Just a quick point that I didn't see covered in the tutorial. Do you have to accept a quest in Dalaran before the comp starts or is it like the Booty Bay one where you can just start fishing?

Also, your pages say the comp is on a Saturday - but the patch notes say Wednesday - which is it?

  14. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 3 months ago:

    No quest is accepted beforehand.

Saturday according to the PTR (checked last night). Has been for a month. Zarhym's patch notes now show Saturday 2PM.

  15. GormanGhaste <Low Sodium>, 3 months ago:

The patch notes that came with the patch download say Wednesday.

  16. Thalen <Salty>, 3 months ago:

I'm staring at the notes in the installer right now, and it says Saturday...guess we'll find out soon enough!

The NPC being closer to alliance is absolutely normal, they are the majority of the player base, they pay for the game, Blizzard take that into account when designing the game, so deal with it. I would have been seriously outraged if it had been closer to horde... There would have been a thread dedicated just for it in the forum.
I won't even comment people talking about "just using the dalaran signet"...
It's absolutely fair... Now El if you want to do some serious shit, just run the data of the winners by class and by faction, this will be VERY interresting count on that, then you can just throw it into Blizzard face, just for laugh. I know on my DK I'm winning the BB contest for the last 4 weeks, and I know exaclty how my class factor into my win, just to make sure nobody else get the pole, since you have hinted the fishing skill might be important, I'm killing the competition right into the egg. You might argue that i'm drawing more people against me, for thoses achievements maniacs, but that's a risk I'm willing to take. I think recently I have disgusted so many people, that they don't even show up anymore, so maybe they forget little by little that this achievement even exist, which might even boost my chances further.
About the fishing skill fact : anyway you can't be sure of that, there might be a cap of effectiveness, being 500 might be better than 75 sure, but nothing proove that having 617 is better than 500. At which point you can debate whether or not casting the hook every 10min is not shooting yourself in the foot.

Since you are a dedicated fisherman, and i'm nothing, and I hate fishing. I'm just doing it for the ring, the holy graal for twinks. I might kindly propose to you each saturday, to go make a round in the forums asking :
1/ Who won the derby, name, faction, class (and obviously server, since easiest way would be to ask in each forum server. You could eventually try to get attention in a dedicated topic somewhere.)
2/ Go on his server, and ask him what level in fishing he had, exaclty. Time spent. Number of catches. etc.

Obviously some may post here if/when they win, but I guess not many.

With all this data, you should be able to find out the exact date and specific circumstances of how, when, and where young Biff got his hands on that sports almanac.

The in-game calendar says 2 PM Saturday for the new tourney.

So now I'm looking at the patch notes as they patch. And I've re-read the first line a few times, with new emphasis:

"The all-new Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, a test of fishing skill with a healthy dash of luck..."

We've largely read that as introductory waffle, but it also says, "fishing skill" is part of the test. Aren't words wonderful?

Well still but I was the first one to suggest the idea if you read the first posts...
If we don't see all level 617 winning on this saturday, you can still read and re-read, how healthy RNG is...according to Blizzard Entertainement.
