[Contests] Kalu'ak Fishing Derby

  1. ctishman <Angler>, 2 years ago:

Aww heck, I'm so mad about the date change on the fishing derby.

I've got every other achievement in the Salty meta, but could never so much as try at the fishing contest because I work sundays. When news about it being available on Wednesday, which is one of my days off, came through, I was really happy. Alas, though, here it comes to production on another workday (and what is a workday for most people who work sundays, too).

Maybe they'll move the Stranglethorn derby to wednesdays. Please?

Edit: or maybe to any day at 8:00 PM?

We've largely read that as introductory waffle, but it also says, "fishing skill" is part of the test. Aren't words wonderful?
Well still but I was the first one to suggest the idea if you read the first posts...
If we don't see all level 617 winning on this saturday, you can still read and re-read, how healthy RNG is...according to Blizzard Entertainement.

When I did it last week on the PTR, it took me just over 12 minutes to catch a shark with +145 fishing. I lost out by just seconds, the guy turned in and won while I was still loading Dalaran. This week I'm going to wear my whole suit and see how it goes.

    quite depressing :x
so the more it goes the more I think it's gonna be like I thought first, "one catch = win rule"... in other words, very fast contest (at which point the number of casts is negligeable, having 19 or 20 casts won't change the world) => PURE luck + being an ally...

but what do you mean by "with +145 fishing" ? 145 fishing or 450 "+145" ?

but in a way I'm glad, this proove this is gonna be very very difficult to win, STV contest would become a walk in the park, and at the end of the day, nobody will ever see the color of the dread pirate ring... certainly not on servers with 18-25k ppl...

but let's wait and see, ptr, and reality and 250 servers, it's like 250 weeks of data from the ptr...it's only there that we will be able to draw conclusions...

Also on a side note, this is like my 10th edit.

On ptr ppl in the contest are maniacs like you all here, who are maxxed in fishing, it's like a special reunion and all, everybody have the STV pole etc... so you have to look back and think that on a particular server, there would theorically not be you and the other guy on any real server...
So there should normally not be many lvl 620 fishers around...
But I still think, luck is gonna so not be "healthy"...

Anyway if I loose saturday, that mean I wont transfer yet, that mean they can sit on sunday's contest again... & I'm gonna defend my title... like hell, they aren't understand what hit them.... so they better let me win saturday XD if they want to end the STV nightmare...I'm winning back to back each week, just to annoy them
So in any case, it's gonna be a fun weekend....

  4. Shalura <Angler>, 2 years ago:

Yes, 450+145 fishing. I get that just from a lure and my Arcanite pole w/eternium line. I also have a hat, boots and pair of gloves with the +fishing enchant that I'll be wearing this weekend. And I'll be using my Kirin Tor ring, even though my main is Alliance. There is usually a huge wad of afk people clogging up the Alliance Inn in Dalaran which is going to slow down load times. There are usually far fewer people at the portal chamber. Even if you Horde players don't have a Kirin Tor ring, you can set your hearth to the Legerdermain Lounge and hearth to there, it's a bit closer than the Horde Inn.

People can blather all they want about the new pool rules meaning anybody with fishing skill 1 could win the contest, but I'd bet that that will never happen. My main caught the shark in ~12 minutes. I had one of my alts w/~100 fishing fish for the rest of the hour, and I didn't catch one at all. El has had low fishing alts run it w/o catching anything. There does appear to be a skill level related trigger on the catch.

  5. Ninkosen <Angler>, 2 years ago:

Yeah the problem is not low level winning, I doubt it'll happen too.

But how do you explain that you need 12min to catch it and El needs 30min ?
Answer => LUCK, LUCK, LUCK, LUCK, and HEALTHY LUCK.... => SUCKS BIG TIME

Ok so I have heard that the Hand-in NPC for this quest is unfairly closer to alliance hearth points compared to Horde hearth points
Even if just by a little, this sucks because Dalaran is super laggy for a lot of players (I'd go so far as to day 50% of them) and anyone who has participated in the old stranglethorn contest can tell you that every second counts

The NPC being closer to alliance is absolutely normal, they are the majority of the player base, they pay for the game, Blizzard take that into account when designing the game, so deal with it. I would have been seriously outraged if it had been closer to horde... There would have been a thread dedicated just for it in the forum.
I won't even comment people talking about "just using the dalaran signet"...
It's absolutely fair... Now El if you want to do some serious shit, just run the data of the winners by class and by faction, this will be VERY interresting count on that, then you can just throw it into Blizzard face, just for laugh. I know on my DK I'm winning the BB contest for the last 4 weeks, and I know exaclty how my class factor into my win, just to make sure nobody else get the pole, since you have hinted the fishing skill might be important, I'm killing the competition right into the egg. You might argue that i'm drawing more people against me, for thoses achievements maniacs, but that's a risk I'm willing to take. I think recently I have disgusted so many people, that they don't even show up anymore, so maybe they forget little by little that this achievement even exist, which might even boost my chances further.
About the fishing skill fact : anyway you can't be sure of that, there might be a cap of effectiveness, being 500 might be better than 75 sure, but nothing proove that having 617 is better than 500. At which point you can debate whether or not casting the hook every 10min is not shooting yourself in the foot.
Since you are a dedicated fisherman, and i'm nothing, and I hate fishing. I'm just doing it for the ring, the holy graal for twinks. I might kindly propose to you each saturday, to go make a round in the forums asking :
1/ Who won the derby, name, faction, class (and obviously server, since easiest way would be to ask in each forum server. You could eventually try to get attention in a dedicated topic somewhere.)
2/ Go on his server, and ask him what level in fishing he had, exaclty. Time spent. Number of catches. etc.
Obviously some may post here if/when they win, but I guess not many.
With all this data, you should be able to find out the exact date and specific circumstances of how, when, and where young Biff got his hands on that sports almanac.

I think you are quite ill mannered, to say the least.

I feel that someone had to mention it ...

Ok anyone complaining about the vendor being near the Alliance side. It is no big deal. If anything anyone who is an engineer will have a far greater advantage vs anyone else.

    1. X-Ray Specs.
    These dramatically reduce lag.

    2. Northrend Wormhole.
Allows to drop to a backup location.

    3. Nitro boost.
Allows you to get a head start out of the inn as fast as possible.

After that having Kirin Tor ring will help as well.

However the average time to complete the competition appears to be 10 minutes. My Realm completed on 8 minutes. So a lot of the prep work to move around is for the most part completly pointless.

I started off at Borean icebergs. I had 8 nodes around me. I had done 7 of those nodes in 4 minutes when literally like a horde of locusts a swarm of people dropped in on the location. I wasted another 5 minutes there trying to find a node. At this point it was won, but you can't hear it.

I used my wormhole to fall back to my backup location (howling Fjord) . From there fished in quiet until the hour was up. Did not fish up the shark at all.

Fishing skill is needed, but I very much doubt you need to win BB to win this competition.

Dalaran's fshing competition was just won in seven minutes. I was under the impression that it was a quest you had to pick up from the contest giver, so I had barely gotten to a fishing spot when it was over.

Overall, I'd say this contest emphasizes the worst aspects of fishing. Luck is fine when you're sitting around and just fishing to pass the time, but when the entire contest is based off of nothing other than luck, it's silly.

I'm glad I already won Stranglethorn a couple of times so I don't have to worry much about this silly thing.

  9. Antonine <Salty>, 2 years ago:

Eh, at least this contest is done Solo (which I believe is in the spirit of fishing) and takes very little time to participate in. Though I have to say that these contests, while potentially enjoyable and a nice feature, really have no place in the meta. I'm still surprised that they haven't given them their own title and just promoted them to "Feat of Strength".

I'm glad that I can finally participate though.

  10. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 2 years ago:

It looks like the contest is much more random than hoped...

Can anyone confirm whether the 2nd prize is 5 Sharpened Fish Hook or a Bag of Fishing Treasures?

Oh. And thanks for the Gnomish X-Ray Specs suggestion. I'm trying to think of other similar items. Some similar items, like Belbi's Eyesight Enhancing Romance Goggles, still need to show armor.

Perenolde US was bugged for the Derby this week. Elder Clearwater wasn't able to be interacted with, thereby denying anyone the ablility to complete the quest. He yelled to end the derby and still nobody was able to turn in.

  12. Gummo <The Pacifist>, 2 years ago:

El, Shadygrove in the results thread (1st post on page 2) confirms the Bag of Fishing Treasures as the "Better Luck Next Time" prize.

Am I the only one disappointed with it? It seems more like a raffle then an actual competition.

I asked if it could be changed. :-/ I would really like to see something that requires more time to complete and some level of planning.

Quick question to start me off....when video settings are all turned to low, pools are almost flashing every half second. Meaning i can't see if my bobber is in the pool right away, anyone know what setting I need to raise so pools look "normal"?

Since it seems many others have given their two cents on this new tournament, I will as well. As a multiple STV tournament winner I really don't mind that this thing is mostly luck. For one it gives those people who feel the STV tourney is "impossible" a chance to get their title. In addition, much like every other fishing thing in this game....it is just a matter of time before I get this shark. I consider myself one of, if not the most insane fishermen out there but, I didn't get my turtle first, mr pinchy first, etc, etc (and trust me I was out there busting my hump trying). Of course I feel if there was any justice in the world I would of won today, but the only thing I can do is be out there next week, and the week after, and the week after that. If I've said it once, I've said it 1000 times....the only skill that separates the fisherboys from the fishermen is patience.

I couldn't agree more about it being a raffle as opposed to a competition. I ranted about it on wowhead a little: http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=24803#comments:id=967744

I'm happy the event is there, and I'm glad it gives people a better chance at a difficult title, but they could have made it just a tad more challenging than "who can beat the RNG first?"

  17. demongarlic <Angler>, 1 year ago:

The Derby is worse then the booty bay contest a dk on my server won it and he was not even close to 450 fishing had the worst pole in game +0 and had no fishing but his pole why they call it a contest at all its all just luck And after so many years you would think they fix the booty bay one so many people win it over abd over again not cuz they are good fishermen but cuz they show up with a army and kill every on the beach make it a no pvp zone and let me see just one person win it twice in a roll twice a year maybe lol ty for letting me vent alittle GL all.

  18. traconis <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Does someone know where is the best place to fish blacktip shark?

  19. traconis <Angler>, 1 year ago:

demongarlic it doesit matter if you have the worst fishing pole only the luckiness counts
