[Fishing] Old Crafty bug - Another point of view.

    Hey fellow fisherman/women.
    This is my first time posting here. Although I visit this site few months, I didn't need to write anything. So, before I ask, I'd like to thank El for this wonderful site and fishing luck it gave to me, and of course everyone posting here for lots of useful information.

    I wasn't really interested in Old Crafty/Ironjaw before. I've won Fishing tournament, got few parts of fishing gear, got Pinchy's pet.. so I didn't think I'd ever want to catch those. Achievements didn't change much, because those weren't part of Salty achievement.

    However, now, when there's pretty bug with Old Crafty and fishing daily quest. I had to make really painful decision. Seeing as my friends fished Crafty within merely tens catches, I tought, I have to do only two fishing achievements and I'm done with all currently obtainable. Crafty seemed as best place to start. However, as a patient fisherman (although I won't argue with other, there are more patient that I am; it took me only 1100 to get rare fish..), I though it wouldn't be fair to do this achievement thanks to this bug.

    I've chosen the hard way. After Old Ironjaw on 130th catch, I had good mood and went to Org next day. No success in Valley of Honor, so I ended in water under mage trainers in Valley of Spirits (at least, I think it's the name of it). 1100 casts and nothing, I went back next day and caught it finally within another 400-500 casts.

    Now, my question: Do you think that fisherman should take advantage of this bug and get rid of this painful grind? What would you do, what do you think about it?

    (P.S.: Nobody on my server can confirm if it does still work after patch 3.0.3. We had that daily only on this weekend, nothing after patch 3.0.3. So, my question might be out-of-date)

    i think a person that wants to get achievements done should go ahead and use the bug. let them do it and get out of my way :P... i cant speak for everyone, but i know i fish for the unknown. i never know what is going to be on the other end of that line.

    sure its kind of boring sometimes, but it makes it that much better when you finaly get what you are fishing for. besides... after you catch "everything" what would you have left to fish. fish'n aint about gett'n it over with, its about enjoy'n the time. i dont think the easy way is the most rewarding way.

    I had not fished up crafty or ironjaw for that matter before the patch 3.0.2 and although i was aware of the glich i grinded it out. Painful and frustrating but i knew it would be more rewarding, and it was. All 1821 catches for crafty and 871 for ironjaw. Character building exercises, phat lewtz, and a good story rolled into one, what more can you ask?

    Honestly. I find fishing for Old Crafty very stressful. i mean I enjoy a challenge but getting ganked and stalked while trying to catch a non-title fish isn't that fun for me. Or at least it's not in the same challenge as Mr. Pinchy pet or the rare fish.

    I have tried, and not succeeded in this fish and I'm not sure i will. So many that I know have gotten it through the bug.

    I do enjoy interacting with horde and trying to be supportive of them if they're in IF fishing for the same. There is definitely a brotherhood in this game with fishing that I respect.

    Well, I can confirm the bug still exists in 3.0.3. I just tested it, and got the (unlootable) old Crafty on my first catch.

    It *is* a somewhat lame way to get the achievement. However, as I'd already spend several thousand casts getting six Mr. Pinchys on the way to my magical crawdad, I must confess I didn't mind testing to see if the shortcut was still around. ;-)

    I also agree that it's a little stressful. I felt that I had established that I could make my way in to Org (having done it twice for fishing), and now it was just a matter of time. I can't really afford to stay up super late (or be on super early) when it would be the easiest to do, and I'm not on a PvP server just to avoid the gankfests, so I doubt I'll be going back soon to get it the real way.

    I figure I'll spend enough time fishing up the rare fish now, anyway, to keep me honest.

    I'm not very fond of abusing bugs. On one hand I really want Old Crafty, but abusing a bug to get him makes him feel a bit less epic. On the other hand though, you do exactly as the description says because you do 'outsmart' him :P So I think I will give this a try as soon as the Crocolisks in the City daily pops up.

    Well for me taking advantage of the bug is no fun, it’s like you just missed out on a part of the game. I started out as a fisherman as I enjoyed these little challenges, it would be a shame to miss out on one. There aren’t that many rare fish/achievements for us fishermen and when they’re gone they’re gone, why waste one?

    I caught Old Crafty a while before patch 3.0.2,I think i would try to catch the fish for about 200 casts,if it does'nt work i would use the bug.

    Oh, I agree, but the key point here is "for me".

    That is, I found the idea of learning how to "sneak" into Org fun. I found fishing there alongside some horde who could, if they wanted, gank me - fun.

    I don't find sitting there for six hours fun as a concept, however. For others, it may add to the satisfaction. I'm not a big fan of grinding overall, and only do it if I have some goal in mind, that seems reasonably achievable.

    Overall, it is one think I don't like about the salty achievement. I do want to complete it - so it makes the whole thing kind of like a checklist of stuff I need to get done. For some of it, that's fine (and fun), but for others - that are more of a chore - it becomes work, stress, un-fun. For me, at any rate. YMMV.

    Well, Dragonmaw is PvP server and many people here are just used to ganking. Most Horde I met just killed me on sight, so, it wasn't fun at all. Seeing as everyone would come to me, while I was fishing for few hours, just so they can make it worse for me. And everyone, I mean really everyone. Even low levels just came to me, obviously they couldn't do anything to me, so they at least shouted that I'm there.

    Real downer for me was Horde's fishing community, even those who were fishing attacked me. On other side, when I saw someone fishing in IF, I'd just let them continue. Fishing community always looked somehow special for me and I though people would be more solidary. Never mind.

    However, as Vicenti said, it was challenge for me and well, when I start somthing, I just can't leave it. I can imagine that I'd get over this ganking and continue fishing until I'd get it. However, this is really strange, I decided to get Crafty (and even Ironjaw, although I got him before Crafty) only because of this bug and I didn't even take advantage of it...

    I can enjoy fishing but I can make it real nightmare. It's pretty sad. I made from my Crafty farming must-do thing and thus real nightmare. Looking back at it, I'm glad that I caught it within two days, I'd be probably in Orgrimmar now, still trying to catch it.

    I wish I'd known that this was a bug, myself, now I feel I've cheated myself out of the achievement >< Got an Old Crafty and the crocolisk on one cast, and couldn't loot the crafty... repped it and received the fish in the mail, even though I got credit for it. Now I'll have to see if I can fish up a second, without the 'exploit' ^^

    On the other hand, I could just go to Ironforge and get Ironjaw the 'right' way... 3 or 4 days there and no luck so far ^^
