I'd recommend the side entrance, you probably won't run into a single Horde on your way to the water in the Valley of Spirits, if that's where you're planning on fishing. Main gate will inevitably get you some attention, unless you're doing it from about 2AM to 5AM.
[Fishing] Old Ironjaw in 42 min

Yes, definitely side. Pre-BC, my 53 mage was able to ride in and lose all aggro and just fish at Spirit Lake for a bit (about 4 AM server time).

I almost hate to admit this.. ran in side entrance, was killed by new lvl 75 elite guards, rezzed and went to Valley of Spirits, /sleep, 9 casts, caught Old Crafty. WOOT!

I wanted to spend a quiet evening pre-3.0.2 to catch Old Ironjaw for the achievement, and to my surprise, I caught him in the 2nd cast... I was very happy about the improbabilty of this happening, but I didn't know what to do with the rest of the evening, so I went to OG, got to the Valley of Spirits behind the little rock, only 3 people spotted me, one was a level 25 priest who tried to smite me an constantly missed and got eventually one-hitted, one was a paladin who ran towards me, waved and left, and one was a rogue who started by saping me a few times, but after I didn't defend myself he just took out his fishing rod and stood beside me for half an hour. Five hours later I went to bed and didn't get Crafty yet :=(

Another idea for fishing stealthily is to turn off any titles you may have. In an enemy player's vision, "Bob of the Shattered Sun" makes a much larger patch of red over your head than just "Bob".
Temporarily leaving your guild would have a similar effect, if you were willing and the people who'd be inviting you back knew what you were doing.

I'm fishing in IF righttt now. 70 Belf.
I ran in and died 3 times to get to the forlorn cavern~!
I can keep a pretty low profile by sitting while fishing.
Sometimes 70s see me and start attacking me~a lot of lowbies swim up to me, right click me and either start attacking or they swim away.
I'm at 614 casts and still no ironjaw. Boreddd out of my mind. ~_~

finally got old ironjaw today! :)
A horde fishing in IF is a real pain on my server and had to corpse run so many times it wasn''t funny, I would definitely recommend dying in stormwind then corpse running the tram, get rezzed at the spirit healer south of IF then try to drag yourself in a few a times as possible to forlorn caverns.
I took over 800 fish to get him if anyone is keeping count.

I was at IF this weekend leveling my fishing skill and hoping that I might catch Old Ironjaw at the same time. There was a level 70 horde there obviously trying to catch Ironjaw as well. I left him alone as did another alliance guy who was fishing. Sure enough, the horde caught him - I knew as soon as it happened by the combination of the achievement glow and the big dance he did.
He was nice enough to log in a few minutes later with an alliance alt so he could thank us for leaving him alone.
My quest for Ironjaw continues...at least I'm now at 375 skill.

My troll has been parked in the back of the Forlorn Cavern in IF for about a day or so now. Closing in on the 500 fish mark, multiple ganks, one low level dwarf hunter scared to death when he flagged after casting Hunter's Mark on me (who knew dwarf legs could move that fast?). Still no Ironjaw.
The run in to Forlorn Cavern took 3 deaths, would have been 2, but some Draenei shammy was fast on the earth shock as I dove into the "ditch" by the bridge.
Now, to figure out if I can water walk in to Ghaz after I get through this fun :-)

It's impossible to fish on Malygos server in Ironforge (I'm Horde). There are always fisherman there... and sometimes they're nice and just fish with me (since we're all there for the same cause...fish) but most of the time they're mean and go out of their way to kill me. I never killed an alliance player fishing in Orgrimmar. I was fishing next to a 70 human warlock the other day in Orgrimmar. It's just fish. T___T
Where is the fishmen's code!? :P

I guess this is the official Ironjaw thread there. I had plans to start working on this early in the day but alliance wouldn't have it. I've decided to play alts until the cavern is free. At various times I attempted to fish only to find a few alliance fishers ready to kill me. I've learned to stay as a ghost until I'm sure its safe. The cavern was finally clear tonight around 7pm. There were also three other horde in a guild working on it. We all got about 40mins of fishing before the allies decided it was time to stop. Hopefully, Ironjaw will take less catches than Crafty (1600). Otherwise, my main is not doing any dungeons or raiding for a long time.
~270 catches so far
1x Green Pants
1x Green Chest
0x IronjawUpdate
After a little over 900 catches, Ironjaw is mine. I'm really happy it didn't take as long to get Ironjaw as Crafty (1500). Sunday and today the alliance were much more friendly. I did get killed a few times but they usually left me alone after killing me once. I'm all ready for Wrath now except hoping the RNG gives me the final daily quest I have been needing for a week or so.

So Saturday a friend and I went down to IF around 9am in the morning to fish. I'm a disc priest and he's a prot warrior, both of us in t6/sunwell gear. I have a bank on alliance side camped at the cavern, so before we got there I talked to the alliance fishing and they all agreed to play nice (i suggest everyone do this if possible, alliance were much more understanding).
We fished for about an hour unobstructed, then a frost mage and a combat rogue attacked us and we crushed them. Ten minutes later we heard the mage shouting and knew trouble was gonna happen. The mage and rogue came back with a ret pally and hunter and once again my friend and I killed all 4 of them lol. Then several minutes later the mage and rogue came back with a different hunter and we killed all three of them. After that the rogue and mage /bowed before us and portaled out. We fished for another hour unobstructed until my warrior friend had to leave. I continued fishing for another hour, I was ganked twice, however after each gank I logged onto my ally char and talked to the ganker and they agreed to leave me alone. Altogether 3 hours of fishing, around 600 casts and no ironjaw for either of us. We'll be back next Saturday to once again own Ironjaw and any alliance that come our way :)- Character: Nosajje (US-Fenris).

do you need a minimum fishing level to catch Old Ironjaw and Old Crafty?

Requires fishing 75 to stop "your fish got away" messages. I would fish in stonebull or crystal lake until your skill is 25-50. Then buy the appropriate lure. I think the +75 lure requires fishing 100 or something.

So I got Old Ironjaw relatively painlessly on my PvE server... I thought I'd pass on my own hard-fought wisdom! So, Old Ironjaw for Horde:
1. Have the proper skill
You need 75 to stop fish getting away. I recommend getting that first, and not using lures. Just fish in Orgrimmar (try and get Old Crafty!) then head out to Ironforge.2. Learn Stormwind and Ironforge
Check out maps, and plan out where you want to go. You'll want to know where Stockades is in Stormwind, where the Tram is in both cities, and how to go to the Forlorn Cavern. If you have an Alliance alt, go check these out and notice where they are. You can also create an alt and do this spotting with them.3. Pick an unpopular time
Early morning on weekends is great, plus it's what a fisherman would do. Otherwise, late nights is good. Just don't go on a Thursday night...4. Head to Stormwind
Why Stormwind? If you're fishing for Ironjaw in Ironforge, you might as well catch "The Fishing Diplomat" along the way, which involves fishing in Stormwind. You can also do Stockades, which is an easy Achievement.5. Sprint to Stockades
Guards WILL spot you coming in Stormwind, even if you're stealth, as city guards can see through stealth and are now level 75. Just remember where you're going and run for it. You WILL most likely need to corpse run, which is a pain in the ass. Just keep going towards Stockades, and enter the instance to be safe. You can take a breath and go get a soda now.6. Finish Stockades.
Achievement! A hero is you!7. Run out of Stockades and head to a canal
The guards outside the instance will aggro, so what you want to do is quickly jump in the water. Swim along the bottom to avoid being seen (if you must, come up for air then go back down.)8. Head to the end of a canal
Spot a quiet end of the canal, and quickly get out. Fish. Achievement! Jump back in.8. Swim towards the Tram
Just swim at the bottom of the canal until you reach the Dwarven District. Get out and RUN to the tram. You'll lose the NPCs when you enter the Tram instance portal. Careful of players inside. You can hide in the tunnel, and move on board where you see nobody.9. Ride the tram to Ironforge
Hope nobody ganks you on the way...10. RUN to the Forlorn Cavern
Guards WILL aggro, but if you make it to the corner of the Forlorn Cavern, they'll let you be. Players are another problem; most likely they'll kill you. It's ok, the run isn't as bad as Stormwind.11. /lie down
Go to the very corner, and lie down. You'll be less visible.12. Fish Ironjaw!
Be prepared to spend some time here. There'll be other people fishing, but if they're fishermen, they'll most likely leave you alone. Be wary of people stopping and studying you... Most likely they're working up the nerve to attack you, or asking for help on General chat. You WILL get ganked, so be prepared for it... But if you behave in a friendly manner with other fishermen, there's a chance they'll tell people to leave you alone.Fishing Old Ironjaw as Horde is exciting, and I recommend it as you level up. It'll make the skill-up process a LOT more exciting as you're on edge throughout it all. Trust me, it does make things more fun. :)
It took me 400 casts to get Old Ironjaw, but results vary wildly. Old Crafty, who is supposed to have the same drop rate, took me 1500 casts.
Be aware that catching Old Ironjaw will pop up a BoP confirmation message. Don't recast too quickly; you wouldn't want to lose Ironjaw!!
NOTE: Naturally, this is a LOT easier with stealth, but you'll still corpse-walk a bit. In the Forlorn Cavern, just stealth when you see someone stopping and watching you; they might decide to try and spot you out (say, by using AoE), but many times this will discourage them.

Day 1. Over one hour standing in the inner end of the pool in Forlorn Cavern, no Ironjaw.
Day 2. Over one and a half hour standing at the fellas that hand out pets in Forlorn Cavern, no Ironjaw.
Day 3. 20 minutes at the pet dealers in Forlorn Cavern, no Ironjaw.
While fishing on day 3 I read this post, and since all horde players seem to catch it in the inner end of the pool while lying down I thought I ought to try it too. Swam in to the inner end, cast Frost Path and jumped up on the surface, angled some Bright Baubles and lie down. 6 minutes later I got Ironjaw.
Perhaps it's just coincidence, but perhaps it makes it easier to catch him lying down, regardless of faction....Now I just have to get to Orgrimmar and try and lie there too while fishing (spent almost two hours there this weekend, standing behind the waterfall, only small fishes).
Thankyou for your help so far :)
