[Fishing] One That Didn't Get Away - achievement

  1. Kahless <Salty>, 1 year ago:

I agree it's probably not healthy. That's why my primary goal is first to 450.
First to Salty is gonna require alot of luck.for the rare fish and possibly for the coin master also.

Am I correct that the Achievement system will keep track of the first in Realm to reach the skill cap?
But it no longer keeps track of other achievement firsts?

  2. zatx <Angler>, 1 year ago:

They removed all "First" achievements from Beta and they are not tracked. You won't get a "First to 450 Achievement", you just get an achievement for reaching 450.

I think we really need to bring the oversight of how rare these fish are to Blizzards attention. 1 in 10,000 is totally not healthy and doesn't really fall in line with the difficulty of the other achievements.

  3. Blahbar <Angler>, 1 year ago:

If they dont change it, i want more than 10 points for it...more like 10000 points.

  4. Vaughn <Angler>, 1 year ago:

    Hi guys,

after reading this thread I tried fishing at the Bay of Storms.

You might have already noticed, but things like Winter Squids DO NOT count as fish and won't give you credit for the cath 100 fish achievement!

I'll try fishing in the pool in the Wailing Caverns now, I remember catching an off-hand fish very often back in the days.

Oh, and because this is my first post here.. thank you El for this awesome site!

  5. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 1 year ago:

Kahless: In the current beta there are "Feat of Strength" achievements for the realm first 450 in each profession. These award no points and no titles, and will only display in the achievement User Interface for the person that gets them. There are no other known achievements for reaching 450.

Just to point out that this is fairly RNG driven...

    Stonebull Lake, Feathermoon server:

    1st catch - bloated smallfish
    2nd catch - 12 pound mudfish
    95thish catch 10 pound mudfish

Obviously, the sampling size is statistically insignificant, but has anyone seen an overall increase in off-hand fish drops? I also caught an off hand grouper in Tanaris earlier in the day.

  7. Jolt <Angler>, 1 year ago:

i had tried Stonebull lake for fun while "discovering" the area. I caught 2 ten pounders, and 2 twelve pounders in the 100 casts I tried there.

  8. Maej <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Some numbers of fish I've caught in Stonebull lake over the last three days:

    1630 total fish
of which 22 Mud Pound Snappers, either 10 or 12 pound. No sign of the 15 pound Mud Snapper at all. These numbers are fairly unlikely, assuming about a 33% chance that the off-hand fish is 15 pounds.

  9. Sauce <Salty>, 1 year ago:

Since the patch (and subsequent server restarts and setbacks), I've managed to catch around 1500 fish or so. The majority of my time has been spent at Crystal Lake, but I also tried my luck in the Bay of Storms (which I opted out of to complete the 1000 fish achievement since most of the fish caught here do not contribute to the total; also it's far away, I mean, I don't want to have to travel that far each time I want to fish). At Crystal Lake, I've caught several 10 and 12 pound mud snappers, no 15 pounders yet. Thank you El for the number crunching, I guess if the numbers are as bad as you say they are then I will take my time on this achievement.

This achievement is pretty ridiculous, it really shouldn't take that much time to get a large offhand fish. I assumed that the fishing contest was going to be the major constraint for salty, since that limits the number to about 150 characters per server, but this other achievement may be just as challenging.

I think I'm going to try Azshara (for probability), since I am sick of hearing the shade of the headless horseman in Elwynn.

After been fishing in bay of storms.. 1300 fish and things... 837 fish rest non fish..

Took a friend to Steamwheedle port to clear out stone scale eel swarms "not at fish" to spawn the fIoating wreckage pool.. I took some throws next to the pool...

9 throws later... A sligth swirl by my bop, I lurked with my wrist and could feel a sligth anticipation.....

Bing.... and the line went mad, he tried to run, but I was lucky to have my boots on so I steeped in to the sand and reeeled him in...

    68 pound Grouper...

Now talk about a fishing story ^^

  11. Sharina <Salty>, 1 year ago:

So I fish without a fishing mod, because since patch there hasn't been an updated mod available.

On Friday and some of Saturday I tried fishing in Crystal Lake in Elwynn Forest.

I have caught about 537 fish (I fish for a couple hours here and there rather than long stretches).

Of those 537 fish, I caught:

    1 10 Pound Mud Snapper
    4 (yes 4) 12 Pound Mud Snapper

The rare fish out of Crystal Lake is the 15 Pound Mud Snapper. Imagine my frustration at catching 5 heavy Mud Snappers, and none of them are the right weight!!!

I also think this achievement is not healthy.....I hope they increase the drop rates.

Really in my opinion the drop rates should be in line with Old Ironjaw and Old Crafty. Those still take time, but they are not nearly as impossible as these other rare fish. Good luck to the rest of you.

  12. Heanet88 <Angler>, 1 year ago:

So im thinking about trying to fish up the Mud Snapper outside of Orgrimmar.

I have had some really awesome luck on catching rare fish lately (2 days ago i caught Old Crafty and Old Ironjaw within 20 casts of eachother and they were both before 520 fish caught :D)

So i hope this gets me up to 1000 fish caught so i wont be bored till expansion lol :P

  13. heraklen <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Even with these odds I rather see they keep this part and scrap winning the extravaganza.
This part really caters to the persistant fishers and surely adds to the fine fishing stories :)

  14. Bijoou <Angler>, 1 year ago:

I've caught about 2500 fish at Stonebull lake now. No 15 pound mud snappers. I did catch three 10 pound mud snappers in a row which was odd. A guildmate of mine was trying to do this in Feralas and decided to try Stonebull lake instead after I told him about the "better" catch rate. He caught the 15 pound mud snapper within 20 minutes. After catching Old Crafty, Old Ironjaw, and Mr. Pinchy I'm quickly losing interest in fishing.

  15. Barkeater <Angler>, 1 year ago:

I caught a 7lb then a 21lb Lobster in BoS last night, about 150 catches. I might try Stonebull tonight. This is a crazy Achievement!

  16. Nosajje <Angler>, 1 year ago:

I have a strong feeling that this achievement might be removed from the requirements to get Salty. The only reason I believe this may be true is b/c Tigole stated that the Hallow's End Achievement to collect all 20 masks (pretty much as impossible as catching one of those fish) is going to be removed as a requirement to get the title "the Hallowed." For the last 2 days I've trick or treated every hour (except when sleeping) and have only received 1 mask (female troll). The fact blizzard is removing this shows they may be against the achievements that require such a ridiculous amount of luck as to be impossible.
If they don't remove the One that didn't get Away as a prerequisite to get Salty, then they should at least either A) up drop rate somewhat, or B) have either Crafty or Ironjaw count towards the achievement. I love fishing but as many as you have noted, this achievement seems very very unhealthy and not worth the time wasted (all the fish you would catch while doing this achievement are now worthless as well). I'm planning on waiting till WOTLK and going for either baby coralshell or swordfish (presuming they are there) since at least the other 5000 fish I'll catch can be cooked and sold for profit.

  17. Kathane <Angler>, 1 year ago:

~150 total fish taken from Stonebull Lake since 3.0.2

    1 x 10 pound Mudfish
    2 x 12 pound Mudfish
    1 x 15 pound Mudfish!!!

  18. Maej <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Update on fishing at Stonebull Lake:

2106 fish caught, also have caught quite a lot of hp and mana potions and even a recipe for Swiftness Potion. Of the more than 2k fish I've caught, 31 were 10 or 12 pound mudfish snappers. I'm getting the feeling that either the RNG is seriously against me :<
surely statistically the chance of this happening is small?

  19. Jagent <Angler>, 1 year ago:

I've been working on this one for a few days know. I tried Azshara for only a little bit (About 500 fish) but then I went to Stonebull for the last 100 for my 1k fish Achievement. Will probably stay at Stonebull based on this forum

Also been working on Old Crafty. 1000+ casts and still nothing.

  20. Xyton <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Well, since 3.0.2, my fish caught counter is at 800, and most of that has been fishing for one of these suckers.

In this last go at Lake Al'Ameth, here was the takeaway:

    219 Raw Brilliant Smallfish
    171 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper
    4 Bloated Smallfish
    2 Minor Potions
    2 10 Pound Mud Snappers
    1 12 Pound Mud Snapper

Off to Stonebull for the next 200 -- at least it will be a change of scenery! ;P
