[Fishing] One That Didn't Get Away - achievement

  1. heos <Angler>, 3 years ago:

wow thanks for compiling all that info. One side note: The dark hearing isnt bop as I traded it to my disenchanter. Also the dark hearing I fully agree with previous posters that it is a special fangtooth hearing so fishing in pools of fangtooth should increase your odds significantly. I am not sure all the previous posters who tried howling fjorde did that.

I caught the Dark Herring last night!

Typically it was exactly when I was NOT trying to catch a rare fish that I ended up catching one. I had spent maybe 2-3 hours fishing in Shadowglen, but this time I was just fishing for ingredients for food buffs. In fact I was going to switch pools to find a glacial salmon, but decided that I might as well finish off the pool... and then BAM! Dark Herring. I caught it in Valgarde.

This topped off a day that I was certain was a bit 'lucky'... I'd seen four blue BOE items drop in less than an hour, and spotted more Dalaran books than I'd ever seen in one evening :) I'd already commented that the RNG was on my side! Should have tried for something else ultra-rare too!

Now I only have the Stranglethorn contest left to win, and the title will be mine... bwa ha ha ha ha...

    Hey all,

Based on many comments here I went to Stonebull Lake to try and get the mudsnapper. I caught many 10 and 12 pounders, but no big one. After a couple days I gave up and went to the lake in Howling Fjord near Camp Winterhoof. I figured at least I could use the other fish that I caught for something. I caught the Dark Herring after about 2 hours in a non-pool cast. Just out in the open. Last achievement I needed for the Salty title!

Good Luck to you all in your quest!

Now this achievement was quite annoying. Decided to level fishing on my rogue as soon as i dinged 80 and at the same time fish for the 15 pound mudsnapper in Elwynn. After roughly 1500 casts in both Crystal Lake and Shadowglen i decided to log out and try with the utterly evil Dark Herring in the morning.

After the daily chores i logged on next to a Fangtooth Herring School. At my fourth cast i reeled up the herring which claims life and consumes the light itself. Talk about a shock factor there. Had almost even forgotten about the achievement and fished just because "oh, a school. might as well...". Insane. Might add that i got approximately fifteen 10 pound mudsnappers and six 12 pounders back in Elwynn... that sucked something immense. But at least i got the coolest weapon ingame and one dreadful achievement less for the Salty title. Thanks for an awesome website by the way.

about 2700 fish and no sign of a 15 pounder in Stonebull Lake (Mulgore)

    so far i caught:
    1601 Brilliant Smallfish
    1049 Longjaw Mud Snappers
    17 10-pound mudsnapper
    13 minor healing pots
    5 minor mana pots
    4 bloated smallfish (containing Malachite/Tigerseye)
    3 12-pound mudsnappers
1 Malachite (not on Thottbot that you can 'catch' it here :p)
1 Tigerseye (not on Thottbot that you can 'catch' it here :p)
    1 Practice Sword
    1 Journeyman's Belt

    But i'm not giving up!
While i'm typing this, i'm fishing...

    EDIT:
after 3033 fish i stopped for that day, was planning to go to 3333 then move to another location...
but today, after my 11th fish i got the 15 pounder :))
    3045 total catches

I haven't seriously started on trying to get this achievement, but one question pops up in my mind: did anyone try to catch the 32 pound catfish in the barrens (and succeeded)?

Being the only lower level zone that has both valuable fish (deviates) and one of the achievement fish, trying for it sounds like an interesting alternative. However, being only one of 5 rare fish (instead of 3 for the mudsnapper), mixed with the presence of the deviates, it may be that the drop rate is significantly lower than that of the other alternatives. Does anyone have insights to share?

    My lucky day!
I read about the fangletooth herring pools and set out for Valgarde.
I saw a pool on the way just south of Skorn so I popped down and first cast caught the Dark Herring.
I am heading out to but lottery tickets.

First off thanks to El for making me fall in love with what is WoW fishing. Thank you for the great site and all your work! I just caught my 15 Pounder 1 minute ago while browsing these forums.

I decided to go after the Salty title on my Death Knight so I pretty much leveled exclusively at Stonebull Lake. I caught the 15 Pounder on my 950th cast over a 3 day period. I am at 286/375 fishing at the moment. I'm looking forward to finishing all the other acheivments!

Hey all. I read around a little bit while fishing on for the elusive Dark Herring and it seemed that people were having better chances fishing from Herring pools. I had fished for 462 casts in northern Fjord at the waterfall by Fort Wildervar when I decided to go for some pool fishing. Alas, 3 pools later, the Herring drops for me. This is either extraordinary luck (which I doubt since I can't get this Valentine's pet) or the pools have a higher drop rate.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, give the pools a chance, they worked for me and it seems like it works for others.

    Salty - yay!

Tried my hand at Shadowglen, best I did was a 10 lber. Tried Azshara, caught a decent sized lobster. Figured I'd keep hitting Winter's Breath Lake (is that right?) by Camp Winterhoof because if nothing else, I could cook and AH the herring and no mobs are nearby to bother me. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I believe I had 179 catches in the lake, with the very last being my Dark Herring. Last catch out of the pool I was fishing in - I stuck mostly to pools there but a few open waters in between. Caught it maybe 10 minutes after hitting max fishing skill :] I never farmed it, just went there if I had some time or was done with whatever dailies I was doing for the day. Good luck! Looks like the fishing contest will now be the hardest part of Salty for me...already got my Crawdad pet.

Yoco - I'm increasingly worried that the 32 Pound Catfish is simply missing from all the "75 skill" zones (both capital cities and places like the Barrens).

The lower-weight heavy Catfish can be caught in these areas. But I have seen no evidence that the 32 Pound Catfish can be. In contrast, there is evidence that the 32 Pound Catfish can be caught in slightly more difficult waters (150, 225 skill).

Generally this follows a simple pattern, which allows us to predict very rare catches in zones where not enough actual catch data has been collected. But my instinct is that the Barrens are so heavily fished for Deviate Fish, that rare fish should have been recorded by sources like Thott.

Thank you for the advice - I'll go and hunt down the dark herring then instead.

  14. Shimarenda <Salty>, 2 years ago:

If the Dark Herring seeks my life, he seems to be successful. All my game time the last 4 days has been spent fishing to no avail. I've put fish in my guild bank, mailed fish to alts for their guild banks, and caused AH prices to drop more than 60% on snappers, herring, and salmon. But I will prevail!

  15. Shimarenda <Salty>, 2 years ago:

I finally caught the Dark Herring in a pool at the northwestern end of Winter's Breath Lake. I don't have an exact count, but I estimate around 1500-1700 casts.

  16. Clocksworth <Salty>, 2 years ago:

Wow, I got my Dark Herring today by throwing 88 casts into Fangtooth Herring pools at the waters around Cauldros Isle, I would kinda bet that there is an increased chance of getting it from the pools than just straight out of the water.

I'll do a round-up of everything in patch 3.1 shortly. But worth adding here that Old Crafty, Mr. Pinchy and the infamous "Baby Coralshell Turtle" are back on the list as possible catches for this achievement. Old Ironjaw is not.

This is not retrospective: I have a character with the Crafty and Pinchy achievements, but One that Got Away is still incomplete.

The individual achievements for Crafty, Ironjaw and Pinchy all remain.

  18. Cryogen <Angler>, 2 years ago:

It would seem that I get very lucky in my early career as a truly dedicated Fisherman in search of the Salty title. I was fishing up lobsters in Azshara while following the leveling guide from this site, when *surprise!* a 22 lb Lobster appeared at the end of my line. I heard that magical sound of the Achievement notification, and "woot-ed" for joy!

I figure I was so fortunate here that Mr. Pinchy will take eons. :D

I'd recommend HF for this achievement. I spent a good bit of time at Stonebull Lake, got nothing. I fished off and on in HF, sometimes in pools, mostly in open water, and on the third day, my catch was as follows:

    40 bonescale snapper
    48 fangtooth herring
    21 glacial salmon
    2 Crystallized water
    1 dark herring

I caught the herring in open water.

  20. madjake <Angler>, 2 years ago:

Finally got it today from FH pool. Been fishing in Howling Fjord at Winter's Breath Lake. Was just under 900 casts fishing mostly in Fangtooth Herring pools.
