  1. nicebbloke angler <Angler>, 1 year ago:

hey all ive been using this great page to help me on my way to becoming salty since this seems to be the most comprehensive of them all and no matter how hard i look i still couldnt find the elusive chance to catch percentage so i thought ide post what ive got for my rare fish i read the mudsnapper was the easiest to get even tho some have had over 3000 casts to get it i got mine in stonebull lake and heres what i got

    brilliant smallfirsh: 190
    mudsnapper: 113
    10 pound mudsnapper: 3
    12 pound mudsnapper: 1
    healing pot: 2
    mana pot: 1
    15 pound mudsnapper: 1

    total: 311 casts
i think im pretty lucks since ive read reports of over 2k in the same lake but i hope this helps getting that % to cast i think this is the easiest to get tho since azhara bay of storms ive read over 7k casts and nothin so ide suggest trying this guy u may get lucky my friend got the same fish in the same lake after 8 casts

/cheer just caught my dark herring out of a pool, with a total of 45 casts I would definatly recommend fishing for this one as your one that got away, unless you want to wait for 3.1

  3. Kalito <Angler>, 1 year ago:

1005 casts in inland Howling Fjord, have my Dark Herring.
The recommendation on the site linked to this topic is very good. As an alchemist and cook I sold raw Glacial Salmon, Pickled Fangtooth and Pygmy Oil on AH making a guestimated 4000 gold while trying for this achievement. The crate contents and crystalized waters go to friends for their professions and the Rockhide Groupers get cooked for questing/instancing foods :)

  4. atg <Angler>, 1 year ago:

I used 1966 casts in Stonebull lake to get the 15 pound mud snapper.

    Dont give up!

  5. Orim <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Five straight nights in Fjord for the Dark Herring - no luck in either nodes or open water. 1500+ casts.
Two straight nights in Stonebull and another night in Teldrassil's starting zone. 1000+ casts

Took a break for a while, did some more reviews and research, found many recommendations for Stonebull, again. Paid a visit again 10 minutes ago. 19 casts and 20th was a 15 lb snapper.

Never give up. :D I'm so happy with a title my fellow raiding members dont have!!! XD

I wanted to share my pain with others. I've got a couple thousand casts on my main looking for the elusive one that won't get away.

Then tonight I logged on a new account with an alliance toon I've been messing with and started fishing. 243 casts and I landed a 15 pound snapper.

If only I could transfer the achievement.

  7. Jeffer <Angler>, 1 year ago:

I also need to share some pain :P
I'm about to hit 18k casts soon, 16k of which are in areas where the achievement fish should drop.
12k of those are in fjord, and still i don't have it...it's the last thing i need for Salty :(

So to anyone that gets it in under 2k casts, try to realize how lucky you are!

Oh ye for those that would wanna check, my char is Jeffer on Ghostlands europe

About a month ago I rerolled a new character but I've been missing my Salty title. I began working on getting it back and just finished One That Didn't Get Away the second time around.

Unfortunately I was not running fishing buddy for all my work but but I still have some good estimates on what it took for me to get it both times.

For my first character I was already at 394 fishing so I decided to go with the "Fish in Howling Fjord so I can sell all the non Dark Herring that I catch" method.

A week and a half later I had approximate 5500 catches in HF (plus a 213 cast stint in Shadowglen) before I caught my Dark Herring.

This time through my character's fishing was starting out at 189 (Was originally an Alt before WotLK and didn't fish extenstively) so I decided to try the lowbie area route since it would help me skill up as well.

983 casts at Crystal Lake, no go. Next day 17 casts at Stonebull Lake and 15 Pound Mudsnapper was mine.

Honestly if my fishing was high enough I'd probably do Howling Fjord again just because it was extremely profitable and I really doubt that the chances are any different than any of the other locations. I was actually a little let down that I caught it so fast because now I'm at 330 fishing and need to just no-purpose fish for grand master.

Stroke of luck? - I aimed for the fangtooth herring pools in Howling Fjord, got Dark Herring on 42nd cast.

  10. Thalen <Salty>, 1 year ago:

I've seen several posts that got the herring around 100 casts +/-, but RNG is an evil thing...

Got my Herring in almost exactly 100 casts. Ironjaw, on the other hand, I'm well over 2000 casts, and still waiting >.<

  11. Angler Nakvie <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Got my dark herring at 46 casts, In a pool. I had done about 1500 casts in Stonebull lake with no 15 lber.

  12. buMf00d <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Got my Dark Herring in 4(!) casts in a pool, damn I'm really really lucky!

  13. Grib <Angler>, 1 year ago:

I just wanted to post that I got my Dark Herring form a fangtooth herring pool in the lake next to Camp Winterhoof and I just hit 386 fishing and a couple days before I got Old Ironjaw in 70 casts in early morning b4 alli was on much.
I think 2 guildies heads almost exploded when they saw achievement... so mad at me.. Im gonna buy a ton of lottery tickets tommorow, may be on a roll.

  14. Calvin <Salty>, 1 year ago:

Just caught my Dark Herring a few minutes ago to complete the Accomplished Angler! Didn't take too many casts today and maybe 250-300 fish over the last three or four days. I think I was on the lucky end of the RNG.

  15. Ohlookatank <Salty>, 1 year ago:

    Total catches: 1980

    Bonescale Snapper: 664 (33%)
    Fangtooth Herring: 578 (29%)
    Pygmy Suckerfish: 457 (23%)
    Glacial Salmon: 205 (10%)
    Reinforced Crate: 40 (2%)
    Crystallized Water: 35 (2%)
    Dark Herring: 1 (0.001%)

About 70% of all catches were from open water in Howling Fjord, and about 30% were from Fangtooth Herring Schools. The last catch which was the Dark Herring, was caught from a pool.

  16. Megamoomoo <Angler>, 1 year ago:

I currently am in dire need of money, and since my server has literally NO fishermen (two of us that I know of with the Arcanite Fishing Pole), Glacial Salmon sells for roughly 10G each.

I was wondering if fishing in Grizzly Hills, in Glacial Salmon Schools, would ever net me the Dark Herring ?

I almost get the feeling it doesn't really matter; I mean, what is the difference between 0.0001% and 0.0002% fishing rate, really ? Statistically, in a human lifetime, the odds won't really ever been in your favor.

So far, I fished six stacks of Fangtooth Herring and twenty-two stacks of Glacial Salmon, and wondered if there were some areas in Grizzly Hills where you CANNOT find said Dark Herring.

    : )

    *hugs*

  17. Shimarenda <Salty>, 12 months ago:

I don't believe you can catch the Dark Herring from a Glacial Salmon Pool. It should be possible from all open water in Grizzly Hills though, and you'll pull in some Salmon as well, though mostly bonesnappers.

  18. colar <Angler>, 12 months ago:

I got the dark herring after exactly 93 tries. Initially I held off doing the rare fishing because I was still missing many other fishing achievements. Now that I got all but STV contest, I decided to tackle this. After reading this and on Wowhead, Dark Herring seemed to be the best choice just for achievement so I went to the lake north of Skorn. 93 cats later I got it.

    80 Fangtooth Herring; 86%
    9 reinforced crates; 9.7%
    and 3 crystallized water; 3.2%
    Dark Herring; 1%

I also fished up 68 Pygmy Suckerfish; 73% alongside with other fishes or almost 3 in 4 casts. They sell better to vendor than on AH because vendor don't take 10% cut like AH and AH is same price as vendor.

Now all I need is STV to finish off fishing, and the entire profession achievement @_@ if only hordes didn't gried me almost every time by blocking fishing pools, allies backstabbing me, and 8 level 19 twinks stealing from my fishing school. In all, about 50 total players compete for the contest, 1 winner per week, always a few more new players each week trying for achievement or prizes.

  19. Azaguth <Salty>, 12 months ago:

    I'm guessing carebear...

  20. Eirchard <Salty>, 12 months ago:

I got the Dark Herring yesterday after about 4000 casts. I was fishing at the top of the waterfall in Howling Fjord (and then using my parachute cloak to take a shortcut back to town, only died a few times). I would strongly suggest that anyone else going for this achievement fish there as well. I made about 3000 gold from selling the bycatch and that's after sending dozens of stacks of Grilled Bonescale to my various guildmates.

I know someone was wondering about this, so let me say that you CAN catch the Dark Herring if you're too low level to use it.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have some pools to find.
