[Fishing] One That Didn't Get Away - achievement

  1. Pirwzy <Angler>, 7 months ago:

You guys are making this achievement too easy. Go for the 22 Pound Lobster or 103 Pound Mightfish. :)

From the 23 pages of this thread, it looks like there are enough results to make the following guidelines for any future anglers who don't want to sift through other people's accounts and guesswork:

Fishing Dark Herring from Fangtooth Herring Schools appears to be the fish that is best to catch on this list. There are many accounts that place this fish at less than a thousand catches to obtain, and few Dark Herring stories involve more than 5000, unlike with Azshara and going for the 15 Pound Mud Snapper, the two other most popular methods. It also has the benefit of catching primarily Fangtooth Herring, with stacks usually going for 15-30 gold. This allows you to make quite a lot of money while you attempt to get your achievement! You can also stay in Northrend and find time to fish more easily, and the Dark Herring itself is actually a good dagger that can sell quite well. A relatively definitive conclusion can be made, for both amount of time and how that time is spent, that fishing in Fangtooth Herring Schools for a Dark Herring is the best option.

I have been casually shooting for the Herring, and I will be starting up again in full force one 3.1 hits with reduced cast times and the chance for a turtle :)

Ok, my first post here so dont flame my bobber please...

I started going for the 'Salty' title yesterday and thought, after reading this thread, going for the 15 pound Mud Snapper will be not the easiest task but it will, at least, up my skills.

Went to Crystal Lake and started fishing, skill was 293. Ok finished fishing at skill 322, and did catch a lot but no 15lb.

    Numbers:
    casts: 300
    Brilliant Smallfish: 186 ( 62% )
    Longjaw Mudsnapper: 105 ( 35% )
    12 pound Mudsnapper: 4 ( 1% )
    Minor Mana Potion: 2 ( less than 1% )
Minor healing Potion: 1( less than 1% )
    Pellet Rifle: 1 ( less than 1% )
    10 pound Mudsnapper: 1 ( less than 1% )

I knew the 15lb was elusive so I didn't mind not getting it too much. Getting the Pellet Rifle did startle me a bit... Ppl throw away the funniest things...

Somewhere on Wowhead I read ppl had caught it in Stone Cairn Lake, and today I said to myself "take 2 hours of fishing there, then go to other locations".

So I went to the lake and found a spot out of the aggrorange of the Murlocks and Defias' and started fishing.

Either the RNG has been given a boot or I was extremely lucky today as on my 13th cast, I landed the 15lb.

    Casts: 13
    Brilliant Smallfish: 10 ( 76% )
    Longjaw Mudsnapper: 2 ( 15% )
    15 pound Mudsnapper: 1 ( 7% )

I was prepared to have to cast more than 2000 times as, in my experience, the RNG doesnt like me too much...

Just to show that luck is a large part of the equasion. I /salute the ppl who aren't as fortunate and did have to cast for 1000's of times.

Might as well head for IF now and get Ironjaw...

/me dances around like a NE on fire...

Achievement or no achievement I am going for all the extremely rares. I found it too much fun trying to get the Dark Herring to not go for the others.

Got my title today--time to toss my data into the pool. All fish were caught in Howling Fjord, inland or unnamed coastal.

    Bonescale Snapper 2509 48.32%
    Fangtooth Herring 1200 23.11%
    Glacial Salmon 837 16.12%
    Pygmy Suckerfish 466 8.97%
    Imperial Manta Ray 65 1.25%
    Reinforced Crate 62 1.19%
    Crystallized Water 53 1.02%
    Dark Herring 1 0.02%
    Total 5193 100.00%

Just got my Salty, this was my final achievement. Fishing in DaggerCap Bay of Howling Fjord. I had fished for 1542 casts, then took a break for about 3 weeks. When I resumed, I had fished for a total of 3 Hours and 53 Minutes, very lazily totaling 300-340 catches and a Dark Herring with a .3% catch rate.

  7. Harrad <Angler>, 7 months ago:

Either the chance of getting the rares has been drastically raised or I need to play the lottery today.

Very early this morning I figured I'd go for the Dark Herring, since I'd at least get something else to sell or use in the process. I traveled up and down some of the rivers in Howling Fjord and eventually ended up at the island in the middle of the map called "Cauldros Isle". There were enough pools around its perimeter to just stay there. In other words the pools respawned quickly enough that a new one was up by the time I got back to my starting point. In any case...

After about half an hour at Cauldros Isle, I got the Dark Herring! Needless to say I was happy. But since I was only about 25 fish from 1000 caught, I continued on to the next pool. On the second cast, I got a SECOND Dark Herring!

My total fish caught in Howling Fjord were 121 Fangtooth Herring and a lesser amount of suckerfish, along with various crate loot and a few crystallized waters (sorry I didn't keep an exact tally). I only fished in the herring pools, not in open water.

So I don't know if the dark herring has a better "chance to catch" around Cauldros Isle or if I just got very lucky. But I thought I'd throw it out there.

As if that wasn't good enough, after that I went to Orgrimarr to get the "Fishing Diplomat" achievement. Since I wasn't being bothered, I kept fishing for a while and whattaya know, I managed to catch Old Crafty after only 80 casts!

See for yourself at http://www.wowarmory.com/character-achievements.xml?r=Suramar&n=Harrad I just wish I'd taken a screen shot of my log to show my 2 dark herring catches.

So I got 3 extremely rare catches all within a span of about 2 hours. Like I said, I'm buying a lottery ticket today.

    Click HQ please.

I caught the dark herring fish in under 50 casts. Take a look at the video.

I was originally fishing in Dalaran for the coins. I only need 3 golds on my rogue. I got tired of my crappy luck and decided to fart around in Howling Fjord while listening to vent of tonight's raid. After a little less than 50 casts (actually, it was probably about 6-7 total pools), I got the fish. I read in a previous post that they god their fish near Cauldros Isle, and that's exactly where I caught mine. The second pool in that area had the fish.

If I knew more about video editing I'd zoom in on the chat log and item. Sorry if it's poor quality.

I'm going to find another and duel wield them and mongoose/berserker them!

    38 Catches.

So I read some QQ about extravaganza being in the meta-achievement. Yet this is the sucker that keeps me from my title ;____; I've roughly 6k recorded catches of which the majority had the chance to be teh rare fish. Most of the catches were from Howling Fjord and Crystal Lake in Elwynn. Can someone relieve my pain?:'<

  10. Paralord <Salty>, 7 months ago:

Well I just won the extravaganza today, even thou I just about gave up trying. Now onto the attempt to catch the dark herring

  11. Paralord <Salty>, 7 months ago:

Finally got the achievement and got "Salty"
I caught it in a herring pool, around "Cauldros Isle"

Total casts over 2 days, 2600.

I dont have an exact breakdown, but it was alot.

  12. Gimeg <Salty>, 7 months ago:

Thanks to the comments here regarding 'The one that didn't get away'.
On the strength of these posts I went to Cauldros Isle and fished in the Fangtooth pools for about 2 hours and got 'The Dark Hering'.
I don't have exact stats but I had 6 full stacks of Fangtooth when I landed him, so roughly 120 casts into the Fangtooth pools
    Next...the STV extravaganza!

  13. Runne <Angler>, 7 months ago:

Talk about a lucky day. In about 1 hour of fishing I managed to complete my Coin Achviements (only need 3 coins), fish up the Sewer Rat and the Dark Herring. Got the Herring by pool fishing in Fjord at the large lake in the north. Got it before I got 20 Fangtooth Herring.

Thanks for a great site El.

  14. Ravennaraven <Angler>, 7 months ago:

The dark herring? After about 200 fish I caught one for the Achievement then about 10 min later I caught another. Today I have caught two more in under one hour. That is four while trying to catch the turtle. Seems to me if you want to get this achievement maybe this is the one to go after. Or after you complete the achievement they are not as rare to catch. Put my first one up in the AH for sell there was six in the AH. This is fishing in Caldemere Lake so try it out.

  15. jjdog711 <Angler>, 7 months ago:

Picked up my Dark Herring on the first cast in the first fangtooth herring school i fished in at Caldemere Lake. If your going for achievement i'd recommend you fish here!

  16. Bobbob <Angler>, 6 months ago:

As others were good enough to post information about their experience and the guidance was helpful [thank you!], I thought I would do the same.

In the last 2 weeks I've caught the orgimmar fish (old crafty? I'm alliance), mr. pinchy and a dark herring. The first was a bit difficult 1000+ casts and died a few times, the second was easy and the dark herring was less of a challenge than I expected but still took some time.

I started fishing in Grizzly Hills on a quiet stream for about 400 fish and I also caught 100? near Valgarde. The rest were on Caldemeros (sp?) Island near UP. Mostly I tried to fish pools but at times got very bored of flying around looking for them so many fish were caught during long casting sessions.

My Dark Herring was the 1439 fish caught by my tally. The others were :

    446 Fangtooth Herring
    279 Glacier Salmon
    497 Bone... Snapper
    216 Pygmy fish
    + 28 hides, 15 cloth, 22 crystalized water and 32 cobalt ore.

  17. montanabob <Angler>, 6 months ago:

I have been fishing in Ogrimar trying to catch old crafty. 300 fish and none yet. BUT i was in Howling Fjord the other day and was fishing the herring schools. Bam, about 20 catches in and I caught the dark herring. Scared me bad, was NOT expecting somethin like that. Pretty happy though, and gonna keep chasing crafty and ironjaw.

  18. Lathspell <Angler>, 6 months ago:

A guildie went fishing Fangtooth Herring schools in Howling Fjord last night and caught a rare and got [The One That Didn't Get Away] achieve after catching 52 herring. I went over tonight and fished schools and got the achieve with a Dark Herring catch after catching 51 herring. (Whew!!!, all I got left now is the darn contest for Salty...lol)

I was armed with a Kalu'ak Fishing Pole with a +3 line, graced with a Sharpened Fish Hook.
Stats are: 5855 fish caught and 7624 fish and other things caught.

The current random number generator may be rolling in favor of fishing here. So go forth and
fish like hell before the 3.1.2 patch gets released......

    Lath
ps. I got the Sea Turtle drop in Grizzly Hills a few nights ago after fishing about 10 or so schools.
