    I would have to agree that something is up with the dark herring. Just caught one on my.. 5th or 6th attempt to go catch one. probably no more than 200 casts tops. open water, winterhoof lake. just like everyone else.

    I managed to catch not one, but TWO Dark Herrings today, within 10 minutes of each other. I was fishing in Fangtooth Herring schools in Grizzly Hills.

    I fished for the first one for about 20 minutes before I nabbed it; continued fishing the pools in hopes of the mount, and ended up with another in very short order!

    Just caught Dark Herring from Fangtooth Herring school in Winter's Breath Lake. Judging from the stacks of Fangtooth Herring I put on AH, it was about 300 or 400 casts.

    Just two Shatt fishing dailys away from Salty Aladornio.

    Just a suggestion and maybe it has been just luck, but I have caught THREE of the one handed "fish maces" (Rockhide strongfish) the last two fishing tourneys, and that counts as one for the achievement. Maybe they boosted the droprate. Give it a try.

    Old topic is old, but this seems to be the best place to dump some relevant statistics on this achievement, and in particular, the Dark Herring, which I've been gunning for.

    As of patch 3.1, I've been hopping Fangtooth Herring pools, with the secondary goal of getting a Sea Turtle in mind. Numbers were as follows:

    876 Fangtooth Herring
    051 Water Crystals
    060 Crates
    (001 Sea Turtle)
    ================
    987 Total

    Sea Turtle was (iirc) caught as a secondary catch, much like Suckerfish, so it is not included in the total. In addition, I've been mindlessly grinding regular inland water and unnamed coastal water. Numbers are below, and are from both patch 3.0 and 3.1. I've noticed no difference in the relative amount of things caught between these patches. Roughly 3500 of these were caught before 3.1 arrived.

    3023 Bonescale
    1093 Salmon
    0987 Herring
    0062 Crates
    0054 Water Crystals
    (0001 Dark Herring)
    ==============
    5219 Total

    I'm not sure if the Dark Herring was a secondary catch or not. Assuming that it was, it'd make for a grand total of 6206 catches. So despite the Dark Herring being the most recent addition to the hard to catch fish club, the odds are still sadistically low. Have fun ;-)

    It's just your luck. I've got a Sea Turtle in 2k-2.5k catches. In that time I also got 6 Dark Herrings. Oh wait, maybe that's just my luck. Anyway, farming Herring pools for turtle seems like an optimal way for me to get both achievements.

    I have been fishing for one of these fish in all the recommended spots for months and months. I finally caught a Steelscale Crushfish at the Zoram Strand in Ashenvale. I sat right next to the Horde fishing trainer and caught it in about 125 casts. A hordie even gave me some grats when it happened. Apparently fishing trancends factional differences. Must be the smell.

    The next day was the sewer jewel daily and I got the Rat.

    Was hoping to carry that luck into a tourney win, but wife aggro prevented that idea.

    Hey guys, just got this one finally! I finally got mine in shadowglen, not howling fjord. Can't tell you how many herring i've sold off/cooked/etc, and i have enough pygmy oil to keep my entire guild turned into gnomes for years.

    Anyway, here are my stats from today's fishing in shadowglen:
    39 Raw Brilliant Smallfish
    31 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper
    2 Minor Mana Potion
    1 Minor Healing Potion
    1 12 Pound Mud Snapper
    1 15 Pound Mud Snapper

    Hello all! Managed to snag an STV contest win on my level 48 Druid alt so I decided to gun for Salty with him. Obviously I went here first for tips and quickly came across this thread. Being to low level to go after Dark Herring efficiently and not high enough skill to start on Dalaran Coins, I figured I may as well hit up Stonebull Lake while skilling up and hope to land a 15 Pound Mud Snapper.

    Before I started I immediately picked up Fishing Buddy so that I could track my progress and pledged to post my results here either when I landed the fish or gave up (so as not to pollute the results with only success stories). Here it is:

    190 Total Casts:
    (119) Brilliant Smallfish
    (69) Longjaw Mud Snapper
    (1) Minor Mana Potion
    (1) 15 Pound Mud Snapper

    Seems from the other people who posted that I was extremely lucky. Here is hoping that you are too. For your information I was casting off on the little jetty of land on the inside of the lake to the northeast of the village. I had gotten in about 60 casts, left to take my dogs out for a minute, and on the first cast when I came back: THE ONE THAT DIDN'T GET AWAY! Happy hunting all!

    Now time to skill up enough for coins...

    I saw it in my loot.. I can only assume auto-loot killed it. I thought they'd fixed that. Maybe I just clicked to refish too quickly?!?

    Sent a ticket to GM and just crossing my fingers now. Fishingbuddy registered it, but the damn game didn't.

    Anyone else done the same and had any luck from GM?

    I feel so damn stupid right about now.... auto loot is off for the time being just incase lol.
