[Fishing] One That Didn't Get Away - achievement

  1. Corrupted <Angler>, 2 years ago:

After reading comments here and at wowhead and thottbot i decided to aim for Howling Fyord schools.
    My results there are:
2647 total casts from the first cast going for the achievement (99% of those are in schools)
    1401 fangtooth herrings
    0 dark herrings
That was in a period of around 10 days aiming for 100 fangtooth herrings at least per day.
My average time spent per day fishing was 1-2 hours.
I was starting to get really frustrated especially after reading posts that people had caught dark herring in a few casts.
Also i got tired moving from school to school and thought to try mulgore and stonebull lake.
    My results there:
    332 brilliant smallfish
    216 long jaw mud snappers
    5 10 pound mud snappers
    4 minor mana potions
    2 minor healing potions
    2 12 pound mud snappers
    1 warrior bracers
    1 15 pound mud snappers

    total casts 563
All those casts at 5 October

So basically if you are getting tired with not getting the dark herring is not bad idea to try mulgore.
I know i was lucky getting it that fast but still 2.5k+ casts in howling fyord make up for that :).
Also Stonebull lake is good for people that can do other things same time they are fishing like watching movies etc. It maybe take a little longer than dark herring ( according to stats that is) but is a lot more easier just camping one place and fishing 1-2 hours than moving all the time from school to school.

I have spent the last week trying to get the 22 lbs lobster or 103 Mightfish. It has not gone well. I'm fishing in the Bay of Storms on the island where Loramus Thalipedes (NPC) is. I'm starting to get SERIOUSLY frustrated, does anyone have any confirmation on these fish??!! Any insight would be greatly appreciated (and yes the bobber is always within the zone). I'm so heavily invested in this venture, I'm not sure I can stop now regardless but here are stats thus far:

    Darkclaw Lobster: 5853 (45.6%)
    Winter Squid: 2606 (20.3%)
    Stonescale Eel: 1402 (10.9%)
    Big-mouth Clam: 1205 (9.4%)
    Large Mightfish: 1144 (8.9%)
    Spotted Yellowtail: 407 (3.2%)
    Reinforced Locked Chest: 114 (.9%)
    Heavy Crate: 42 (.3%)
    9 Pound Lobster: 14 (.1%)
    7 Pound Lobster: 13 (.1%)
    70 Pound Mightfish: 9 (.1%)
    15 Pound Lobster: 8 (.1%)
    19 Pound Lobster: 7 (.1%)
    12 Pound Lobster: 6 (.1%)
    21 Pound Lobster: 2 (.1%)

    TOTAL: 12832

Judging by the amount of pound lobsters I've caught I can only assume I'm in the right place, and its just a matter of time before the 22lbs drops. However do you think being in Hetaera's Clutch or Scalebeard's Cave might result in more pound mightfish? I know time of day effects catch rate of some fish....would this effect the pound fish drop rate? Lastly I have caught other achievement fish after completing, this hasn't changed correct?

you're never gonna beleive this story......so at this point i was at about 14k casts in when a buddy of mine needs to check my gear because we're gonna start to do arenas together. He hadnt done "The One That Didn't get Away" so he decides to throw out a few casts next to me while he waits on a raid. In less than 15min......22lbs Lobster drops for him....RIGHT NEXT TO ME.....screen shot coming from him, im more determined than ever......unless someone can confirm that you can not catch max pound fish after you completed achievement

The post below couldn't be more correct.

I was well over 1k casts in the Fjord for the dark herring, about to give up after getting Mr Pinchy on 10 casts.

I took the advice and went over and tried in Stonebull Lake, south of TB.

8th cast nabbed me the 15 pound mud snapper. Give it a whirl. Only a tourney win between me and Salty :D

Hey guys, just got this one finally! I finally got mine in shadowglen, not howling fjord. Can't tell you how many herring i've sold off/cooked/etc, and i have enough pygmy oil to keep my entire guild turned into gnomes for years.
Anyway, here are my stats from today's fishing in shadowglen:
    39 Raw Brilliant Smallfish
    31 Raw Longjaw Mud Snapper
    2 Minor Mana Potion
    1 Minor Healing Potion
    1 12 Pound Mud Snapper
    1 15 Pound Mud Snapper
Don't be afraid to try new places!

hi el, i had mentioned this about 7 months ago according to the date on the post, but I have caught the 15 pound mudsnapper for this acheivement in trisftfal glades, it was at the lake north east of brill and UC, i just wanted to let u know so that you can add it to the main page for this achievement because currently u only list mulgore, and elywin forest as possible places to catch it, hope this helps have a good one :)

Started on this in the morning before patch 3.3.3 went live - spent several hours between 2 and 3 fishing until the servers actually dropped my connection.

Was able to log back in, after being patched, right where I left off:
About 30 minutes of fishing after that I was able to take a very nice screen shot, link included for your viewing pleasure.
Now I have one achievement left to get my Salty.

    http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l151/mareak/WoWScrnShot_032310_223033.jpg

    257 Fangtooth
    191 Pygmy Suckerfish
    16 crates
    19 Crystallized Water
    5 Bone scale
    1 Glacial Salmon
    1 Dark Herring - 109.7dps dagger. (cant use it, I am a Fisherman/paladin, a fishadin?)

  8. Saikred <Angler>, 1 year ago:

I figured I'd start knocking out the other achievements for Salty once I won the STV tournament 10 days ago. Cast around 1200 times in Azshara with no luck and moved to Stonebull lake in Mulgore.

I don't have exact figures for each catch I'm afraid since Fishing Buddy ain't working for some reason, but I do remember that I caught the 15 pound mud snapper on cast number 997 in the lake.

All I need for Salty now is [Old man Barlowned] but the git won't give me Bait Bandits...

  9. Gohnk <Salty>, 1 year ago:

    Oh my goodness....

Over 3000 casts and it keeps getting away. This achievement is particularly maddening. Maybe the WoW gods hate me or maybe there is some karma going on. Yea, okay, I got lucky and won the Derby the first time I tried it. And so what that my lvl 10 alt got this achievement WITH A FISHING SKILL OF 17 IN MULGORE!

This is looking like it will take longer for me to get (if ever) than it took me to get "the Insane"

Maybe if I post here, it will drop.

    I want to cry.

I'm making money selling raid buff food. Maybe it's time to go back to cow-land and fish up junk.

I wanted to fish up a 32 pound catfish in ironforge with a lvl80 troll dk to also do Old Ironjaw i was fishing with weater-beaten fishing hat and kalu ak fishig pole. After about 20 cathches i got 22 pound catfish but i still dint get 32 pound catfish.

  11. Trokair <Salty>, 1 year ago:

I was fishing at Crystal Lake last night for "The One That Didn't Get Away" for about an hour. I usually only fish in short bursts. Only did about 200 casts.

Woke up this morning and had 10 minutes to kill before work. Logged on, still sitting at Crystal Lake. Only 4 casts in I caught a 10 lb. mudfish. Said to myself, damn... cast again... and again....

Cast #6 yielded me the 15 lb. mudfish! Luck was on my side today.

I've taken a break from WoW for about 2 years... just returned recently. I purchased the WotLK expansion and it should be here next week. I think the Sea Turtle will be the only serious task left before I nab that Salty title. :)

*edit: I got home tonight... 3 casts into the Forlorn Cavern and I caught Old Ironjaw! This is just crazy... lucky day? Stuff gotten easier in the almost 2 years I've been gone? Curious...

*edit2.... and a day later, nabbed Old Crafty after 591 casts. This is my week! :)

*edit3:.... and today I won the STV fishing contest again! First time went for the pole, so I got the trinket this time around. Now instead of fishing, I AM a fish! :) Happy week.

*edit4:.... updating this post seems to be good luck for me... today I found the Steelscale Crushfish off the coast of Southshore in little more than 200 casts! :)

does someone know which rare fish is the easiest to catch?

  14. Trokair <Salty>, 1 year ago:

Traconis, all of the info for the rare fish for the OTDGA achievement can be found here:

    http://www.elsanglin.com/away.html

They are all pretty much equally as rare. You are encouraged to try for the Dark Herring, if you want to make some money during the hunt.

If you're looking for an easy fishing zone as far as skill and enemy harassment, the 15 Pound Mudsnapper can be found in Elwynn Forest and Mulgore, making it a fairly trouble-free catch. (but still just as rare)

    I hope this helps.

I got the Salty title last year on my old account and then quit World of Warcraft for a year (because at the time, the only thing keeping me interested in the game was fishing).

I just started back up playing last week, and had to start a new account (having given my old one to a friend). I came back and was immediately hit by the fishing bug again. I want to fish, all the time. My friends think I'm crazy, but whatever.

I caught Old Crafty in about 1500 casts. I didn't have Fishing Buddy installed yet at the time.

I then decided this was the next one I wanted to do. While my girlfriend was running around Silvermoon trying to get a hunting pet, I decided to kill time in Mulgore fishing. I then fished up a 15lb. Mud Snapper in 2 casts.

I don't know why more people aren't trying to fish here. This is the same place I caught the 15lb. Mud Snapper on my own character, and don't recall having much trouble that time either.

I'm only level 17 right now, so I won't be able to do too many more of the fishing achievements at this time, but I'm dying to get Salty back. Fishing in those dungeons was so fun, and I am excited to do it all again!

Has anyone else gotten the Salty title twice? (I'm not looking forward to Mr. Pinchy again)

I imaging many people have. I have it on my lock and druid. Those are the only high level toons I have right now, but I plan to get it on my alliance hunter once he can get to Northrend.

  17. TheOldAngler <Angler>, 1 year ago:

    Mjello fellow anglers!

It says in the guide to "One That Didn't Get Away" that none of them can be caught in any of the capital cities. I dunno if it has changed during some of the patches but I clearly remember when i caught Steelscale Crushfish on a regular day of fishing in Orgrimmar. That was like 2 years ago.

  18. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 1 year ago:

Steelscale Crushfish is unexpected in a capital city. I suspect that's since been removed: Orgrimmar is commonly fished, so people would probably have reported it if it were still being caught. However, the Steelscale Crushfish is insanely rare, so it's going to be really hard to be certain. Intriguing.

  19. rekra <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Caught the dark herring in the lake just south of fort wildevar. It was after catching approx. 100 regular fish from pools. I actually caught the herring in open water though, because i got tired of moving around searching for pools

    • Character: Oreus (US-Uldaman-H).
  20. Funberries <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Just thought I would add some more realism to this thread. :)

Over 2000 casts in Fjord open for the herring, half in pools and half open water. No Dark Herring.

Over 3000 casts in Mulgore for the 15lb. Nothing but junk.

5000 Casts in pools across northrend, no turtle.

    Cheers, :)

Although I did get Mr. Pinchy in ~75 casts. So. At least I can talk about the good ol days...
