    Hey Everyone. Just started going for the Salty this past weekend and all your advice has helpped a lot. I was in outlands just bumming around and I caught a mister pinchy. He gave me a the little crawdad dude so I knew I had to get salty. The following weekend I entered the Kaluak tourney (with pretty low expectations) and managed to pull it off. So it was confirmed that "Salty" was in my future. On Sunday I spent the first half of the day fishing inthe fountain and pulled my last gold coin a little after 1. Next stop, Grizzly Hills and farming the Glacial Salmon schools absent mindedly. It was after a quick look on here that I found out that I was fishing the WRONG schools! Doh! Then a quick trip to Howling Fjord to do some Herring fishing. Funny that a dark herring would be in a herring school! >.>; I spent the rest of the evening fishing every school I came across. Mostly in the lake but when I needed a change of scenery I would travel the rivers.No dark herring as of yet. No turtle yet either.The way I figure it, I spent my alotment for fishing achievements this weekend. LOL. So hopefully next weekend will be the Salty weekend with a side of Turtle Mount. I'll keep you posted!

    Pretty much certaintly not. Millions of people fish in the major cities all the time and there are maybe one or two reports of people saying a heavy catfish is fished up there. It may be a fluke, but you would definitely be better off fishing in the actual zones that El reports it being in.

    *SIGH* Still going. Searching the Herring schools. Still no luck. Plenty of pigmy suckerfish. An abundant amount of herring. I'll be living off it for years. No such luck with the dark herring. I'm beginning to think I will catch loch ness faster. No sea turtle either. Can anyone tell me if the sea turtle comes in one of those crates? I keep expecting it to. And for those of you that have fishing buddy, how do you display your catches? Mine keeps resetting per zone. I know I have over 70 fish. =(

    Just caught it right now, and registered an El's Anglin account right ahead to post it, since all the information here has been of such use!

    Kept all of it in my inventory till i caught it, here goes:

    Location: Crystal Lake, Goldshire, Elwynn Forest. (Goldshire side of the lake, between some lillie leaves)

    total: 844 casts (i concider myself exceptionally lucky these fishing days, specially cause i also managed to catch 3x Mr Pinchy within 45 minutes of eachother.)

    Gah! This is SOOOO frustrating. I still can't seem to get my hands on a Dark Herring. I'm starting to wonder if I should move on to a different tactic. This achievement is the last one I need to get the Salty achievement. With every cast I keep thinking (hoping) that it's the last one, but I am sadly mistaken. Do fishing lures help? I have the fishing hat so the lures are free, but I am doubting that they are making a difference. On a posative note since I was in Org turning in the flame quests I cast a few lines and pulled up the one ring. That was neat. I'll keep trying.

    YES! YES! YES! I got the dark herring finally! And with it I become salty! WOOT!! Not sure how to post the #of fish I caught, but let me just go on record as saying it was a lot! about 12 hours of playtime averaged out over 2 weeks. Give or take. Now on to the sea turtle. At least now I can fish anywhere.

    Finally got this one. On a funny note I got the Sea Turtle while fishing for Dark Hering then the day after I proceded to get Mr. Pinchy and pet in first go.

    Then yesterday while doing fishing daily I got the Giant Sewer Rat, so I started thinking it could be funny if I got The One That Didn't Get Away the day after as well. Spent a few hours fishing tonight on off while cooking and stuff and incredibly I caught the 15 pound mudsnapper.

    Over the last month I've only fished standing in the boat in the lake in western Dun Morogh when fishing for this achievement. Here are the stats from it. I did fish for it before as well but more sporadically for different fish around the world and didn't keep track of catches.

    This achievement is horrible because of the EXTREME variability in effort required. If you have not yet done this achievement, or are considering trying but "Salty" is not that important to you, I would discourage you from even trying. It is true that you might get lucky and catch one of the rare fish within 1,000 casts, but probability says that this is very unlikely. You may get it in 3k casts, or 6k casts... or you may get it in over 10k casts like me. I don't know about you all, but ~10,000 catches, mindlessly sitting there and waiting to click over and over and over again wears on your soul and makes you wish incredibly evil things upon the Blizzard employees responsible for this most retarded loot table ever conceived in the history of gaming. The first thing I would ask any Blizzard employee upon meeting them is, "who was responsible for determining the drop rate of rare 'pound' fish, and where can I find them to punch them in the face over and over?"

    Maybe you are single or unmarried and don't mind watching movies alone while you fish, or playing with your phone for hours while you fish. If you are married, like me, I hope you feel more integrity than I do when you have to sit next to your spouse to fish during that movie you guys rented together, just to keep your sanity while trying for this &$%@ achievement.

    Here's my story.

    First I tried fishing in Azshara (about 1 month or so ago) after doing some basic preliminary research and finding that two of the rare fish (lobster & mightfish) drop there. It seems like a reasonable choice for any horribly mistaken noob. I must have caught maybe 500 fish before researching some more and finding that the 15lb mudsnapper was easier to get (I found this site among others and it was very helpful). So I went to Crystal Lake and caught about 200 fish there before installing "Fishing Buddy," with the intention of sharing my data here with you all. Unfortunately the addon crashed multiple times and I have lost the majority of my data. I can only offer round numbers for a few different places I tried. Howling Fjord data remains, but I will not share it because it is spread out over a dozen locations.

    With Fishing Buddy installed I went back and forth between Azshara, Crystal Lake, and Howling Fjord (trying for Dark Herring), catching about 4k fish in Azshara, 2.8k fish in Crystal Lake, and 2,646 fish in Howling Fjord (fishing buddy hasn't crashed yet in HF). After having caught the aforementioned number of fish (about 10k in all) I finally caught the 15lb mud snapper in crystal lake. HOWEVER. I do not know if this was a result of the fishing buddy addon or what, but the *&^$% fish was not looted from the loot window!!!!! I had autoloot activated but it did not work!!! I was so pissed off, and I definitely had houghts of uninstalling the game and walking away from it forever. I figured I would open a GM ticket first and see if they could help me out. I waited 3 days before receiving a response saying that this issue was "outside the scope of GM's ability to assist" so I opened a followup ticket. Nope, still could not help me because they had no record of me having caught the fish. I have a screenshot of fishing buddy recording the 15 lb snapper, but apparently as long as it never appeared in your bag, it never existed.

    I spent the next day or two researching fish bots because of the insanity of all this. I had caught 10k fish already and had actually caught the *^$%@^ fish but was ROBBED of it. I just wanted the achievement DONE. Didn't even care about being banned.

    Anyway, long story short, I cooled down and legitimately (did not get a bot after all) fished in Azshara over the weekend while watching 'This is Spinal Tap' with the wife (felt like crap playing this game during a movie with her) and then fished a little bit tonight and caught the 22 lb lobster in Azshara after 1.4k more casts.

    And by the way, don't let people fool you with "Dark Herring is easier to catch" crap. Flying to hundreds of schools and landing bobbers in them takes additional hours of your time that you must factor in.

    *Wife's story: she caught the steelscale crushfish in Southshore months ago in probably 10 casts and didn't even know what the achievement was for. So you can be multiple standard deviations beyond the mean in a good way, like her, or a bad way, like me. Your choice, but don't risk it. Read a book and enjoy those 24 hours of your life in a better way.

    I totally disagree with your point that the Herring would be "harder" to catch. It is entirely TRUE for a fact that it makes more "sense" to fish for it rather than in Azeroth.

    1. The Drop Chance of the Dark Herring in Fjords Herring Pools is MUCH MUCH higher for sure than fishing the Random Ocean in Azeroth. See for yourself - You say you nearly got mad fishing random ocean in Azshara etc.. Maybe in Fjord you would have got it in the aprrox. 50. catch like me and MANY others:

    2. The herring pools all respawn after very few minutes, plus there are soooo many pools of herring in Howling Fjord so that you will need only 10-30 sec to get to a new one if the Fjord isn't full of anglers (Never the case on my realm). On the winter sea far in the north (don't know the english name, where you free the maid from ice block for the daily quest) are ALWAYS 2-5 pools, you can make your round round the sea and ALL are respawned.

    3. EVEN if you have bad luck and need thousand of casts, you STILL have the chance to fish the Sea Turtle at ALL THE TIME fishing pools. Every angler even if not looking for Salty is indeed looking for turtle, right? You want to catch it one day or can I assume you got it already? STILL no reason to recommend people fishing Azeroth rather than Fjord I think!

    But my gratulations that you have finally catched the one that didn't get away anyway :-)
