I just started looking at the requirements for the "Salty" title last night. I was discouraged from it until I found out that Old Crafty and Old Ironjaw were not part of the requirements. I was disheartened to find that this was one of the requirements. After reading every single post in this forum, and thinking about how terrible my luck in this game is, I was feeling pretty confident that I would never catch one of these rares. As I play alliance and was closest to SW, I decided to head there to try my luck anyway. After 21 catches, I looted the 12 pouder =). I was really excited! After reading about 3000+ catches to finally catch a rare, I figured I'd be one of those people IF I caught one! Good luck to anyone else going for these! I hope your luck is even better than mine ;-)!

Trying Crystal Lake now.
Just got the 15 Pound Mud Snapper too now. 4400+ casts where needed and was looted from Crystal Lake in Elwynn Forest. I first went to Stonebull lake after reading about it on this forum, but didn't bothered to run so far today so just fished from Crystal lake while watching a movie. (i'm alliance)
From the 4400+ casts:
23x 10 Pound Mud Snapper
19x 12 Pound Mud Snapper
1x 15 Pound Mud SnapperFor the people who it matters. it was caught 18.30h server time.
Think it's easiest to go for the 15 Pound Mud Snapper, then any other rare fish, looking at the drops for other pound fishes. You also get a lot of 10 & 12 pound fishes in the low lvl area, and every time it does, you have a chance it is a 15 pounder.
It also doesn't matter if you go fish @ Stonebull lake in Mulgore or Crystal lake in Elwynn Forest. One is just luckyer then the other. Patience is the key.

Stonebull lake 800 catches 5, 10 and 5, 12 mud snappers, three 10 pounders on 8 casts. On the bright side of things I did get my 500 and 1000 fish caught achievements lol But after the 1000 fish award I had to give it up for the day, have not been back yet. Did try the Bay of Storms for bout 500 catches caught every size lobster other than the one I needed so sad this is such a hit or miss luck thing.

As for this particular achievement... I completely agree that, while a nice 'novelty' achievement for being lucky, having it be part of the title achievement will only encourage botting and 'unhealthy' activity. Has anyone made a post somewhere on the WoW forums for the devs as mentioned in previous comments? If so could you link to it? Sorry, I'm still a 'newb' and thanks in advance!

Like this one? There are a few lurking on the beta forums. The achievement was changed late in beta, so subsequent feedback generally came too late.
It is possible the Salty title is supposed to a bit of a time sink, that will be awarded rarely. It is reasonable to argue that a 1/10,000 (assuming that's correct) catch average is still easier than winning the STV contest! Equally it is possible that everyone's luck will suddenly change in the coming weeks, or the 2 unknown fish (Baby Coralshell Turtle and 113 Pound Swordfish) will be more common.
Well thats it for me! Finally pulled out my 15 lb'er at Crystal Lake...
Took a about 3400 fish to between crystal lake and stonebull lake to get it... But majority was done at crystal and stonebull only about 1000 fished...
Just be patient guys and I wish you all luck in you scoring this bastard :D
I don't use any fishing tracking mod as the statistics behind it seem to get pounded out regardless, but I thought I would add my experience with this.
I personally fished this up at Stillwhisper Pond just outside of Silvermoon in Eversong. I don't have an exact number, but it was somewhere just around 1000 casts. I had just gotten 250 when I decided to go for this, earned 500 and logged out, where it got rolled BACK to 350, and then I finally caught the fish about 30 minutes after 1000.
Over the course of the few days I spent fishing there, I caught something on the order of a dozen 10lb and 5 12lb.
For those tired of Stonebull, it appears you have another option.
Just thought I'd put my catch in here cause this forum helped lead me in the right direction.
After fishing for Mr. Pinchy for the second time, for 3 days, and finally catching him at server restart on Tuesday, I went to finish off my 1000 catches at stonebull.
I went there after finding this forum. Yesterday I finished off my 1000 catches with about 118 fish caught. I had stuff to do so I left myself parked there until today. I logged for lunch time and caught about 80 more fish and on my 81st i got my 15lb Mudsnapper!
Looks like stonebull is a hotspot for these. I got mine in no time at all :)

More info to add to the mix:
15 Pound Mud Snapper caught after approximately 1000 casts (from others' information, this seems about on par, maybe on the low end). I caught him in Stonebull Lake, but only because of personal superstition.
At the end, 5:40pm PST, I had also acquired nine 10 Pound Mud Snappers and four 12 Pound Mud Snappers.
Knowledge of the way WoW works leads me to believe that Crystal Lake and Stonebull Lake share the same loot table, but I cannot verify this.
Around 500 casts each in Stonebull and Crystal lakes.
I finally caught the 15 pound mud snapper tonight at 12:20am server time while fishing in Stonebull Lake. I have spent the majority of my fishing time on this achievement and I can say that most of the fish that I have caught were in an attempt to get one of the fish to fulfill the achievement. My total fish count is 2168 atm and many of those fish were from Crystal Lake and Bay of Storms. Having bad luck, I decided to try my luck at Stonebull Lake. Here are the results:
Raw Brilliant Smallfish: 264 (63.8%)
Raw Longjaw Mudsnapper: 142 (34.3%)
Health pots: 2 (0.5%)
10 lb MS: 3 (0.7%)
12 lb MS: 1 (0.2%)
15 lb MS: 1 (0.2%)
Bloated Smallfish: 1 (0.2%)

Total: 414So less than a quarter of my total fish have come from Stonebull Lake. After seeing the amount of success from this forum I think this is the best place to go. (Crosses last achievement off list before Wrath)

I am very happy with the fact that the Salty title will be VERY hard to get. I have fished everywhere for so long its nearly stupid, and I feel I have a raw fish musuem that will rival any fish collection. However, out of all the pound fish I have caught I have ZERO max weight ones. Therefore I am currently going after the crushfish in Southshore and postin periodically in a thread of that name.
I caught the 15 Pound Mud Snapper today while fishing in Stonebull Lake.

Pretty annoying. :/ Total of 5600 fishing casts since the patch now. Going for ir/orgrimmar now. :)Just giving an update. 500 fish in Azshara and 2100 fish at Stonebull Lake and this snapper still avoids me. Slowly creeping up to the ranks for the highest total without a catch. Although, I really hope I don't hit 5600 like smoo. :( Sorry bro.
