[Contests] Poll: Have you won the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza?

  1. Tsathoggua <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Try frequently [though technically not weekly, since Real Life happens], but have yet to win. Usually within three or four fish when the winner is announced. Three times in four the winner is a Night Elf character [which says something about statistics and species distributions, I think]. Average win on Argent Dawn has gone from 25 minutes a year ago, to 20 minutes since TBC. Luck is what it comes down to for me, alas. Long casts on average before a bite, combined with frequently getting stacks of "other rare fish" from the pools [had 20 stonescale eel, 20 tastyfish, 7 firefin, and 4 oily blackmouth at contest call, the other week] means that I've yet to quite make the win in time. Have not yet given up.

I am convinced luck does play a significant role in the contest. After having the good fortune to win on a couple of characters awhile back I decided to take another alt down to the STV to work on fishing skill and see if any rares could be found while doing the contest, not expecting to be competitive.

Two weeks ago I barely managed 20 tastyfish before the winner was announced and figured I shouldn't worry much about winning anymore, given the large number of fellow anglers around.

Last week I tried again anyways and won... for some reason hardly anyone was around and I had 25 minutes to get to 40 tastyfish first (despite those non-tastyfish always turning up).

Luck is important but so is persistence. Being on a lower population server is, obviously, also a good thing.

I couldn't agree more. My first try. I was overwhelmed. Every pool was fished by numerous people. Just crazy. So go in to your first tourney with the idea that you might loose but prepare to win!

<<Every pool was fished by numerous people>>

Heh! Argent Dawn is a rather full server. On average, whether fishing the North-western shore, the South-western shore, or the Eastern shore, I get in only one cast on a pool before I am sharing it. This is of course, only compounded by the "twinks" with their level 19s [and their bodyguard escorts], who in truth are only after the rare fish, but can't be convinced to wait the half hour for the competition proper before swarming the beaches [grins].

As for luck, I am utterly jealous of "Gjargo" on our server, who entered the Extravaganza exactly once, on a whim, and [of course] won. Many familiar "faces" week after week who keep entering and keep trying. One day, that hook shall be mine!

I won it the first week it came out. I traded wins for the first month with a fellow fisherman on the horde side...I won weeks 1 and 3, he won 2 and 4.

It took me a couple months to get all the rare gear though...I ended up vendoring about 5 pairs of boots before the hat finally dropped for me.

Second week tryed, and I won !

    :D

had 2 buddies scout out ahead of me to see where good pools were, got the arcanite fishing pole

  8. Crotalidus <Angler>, 1 year ago:

I won it on Father's Day 2008...an Arcanite Fishing Pole is a perfect Father's Day gift :) The next week I was at 37, and yesterday at 39 when a winner was announced. If it hadn't been for all of the non-Tastyfish catches yesterday, I'd have had the Hook.

There seem to be fewer people in the Extravaganza lately on Earthen Ring, perhaps due to Summer vacations starting. Usually there is a group of unenlightened "contestants" who run around fishing in a pack, apparently without realizing that staying away from other contestants is the key to victory. I didn't see them yesterday, and only had one other player even cast into a school I was fishing. It was kind of eerie, but I'll take that over a crowd any day.

I won about 3 weeks ago after maybe a month of trying. I chose the trinket then, thinking it would help me move around a bit faster for future competitions. After a few close calls, I won again yesterday, and got the Arcanite Fishing Pole. I think I can retire now. At least once I finally get the Fishing Line. No luck there yet.

The very first time I did the contest, I caught 2 rares in about 5 minutes. I got the Lucky Fishing Hat *and* the Fishing Boots! I didn't realize how unusual that was at the time. Since then I haven't seen a single rare fish, so no fishing line yet, but still hoping. Now I have the Blue Fishing hat from the Fishing dailies, the stylish overalls, the fingerless gloves, Nat's Extreme Angler Pole, the fishing boots, the Arcanite Pole, the Trinket, and the Gone Fishin' Loot Card Fishing Chair. I think the best part is, I used to hate fishing in the game, until I got up to around 300, and was able to fish in Outland for raid food. Suddenly, I started enjoying it, even before the fishing dailies, which I still try to do every day. No bucket fish, no 2 Ring, no Mr. Pinchy yet, but I still try.

I think it's true that the slow weekends are a bit better to try winning, especially the holidays, like the upcoming 4th of July. :)

Thanks to the Love Child and everyone here for tips and stories about a secondary profession I never thought would turn out to be so much fun. I won the Fishing contest thanks to the tips I read here. Looking forward to catching a big one in North Rend.

    Just now.

I didn't see too many others out and about, so slow weekends definitely help.

Finally, no more close calls (I've had about half a dozen,)

I just won today on Illidan...a high population PvP realm D:.

Last week I had 37 fish before I got ganked about 4 times by the same group of 5 Alliance. Had that not happened there's no doubt in my mind I would've won, as it took the winner a good 10 mins after that to be announced. THIS week there were no ally at all, but a huge ammount of horde. Someone said they had 37 fish in general chat and I freaked out, but 2 pools spawned right next to me. I hearthed, turned it in, and won. JUST as I was turning it in, another druid was walking up behind me to do the same.

Fishing can be SUCH an adrenaline rush D:

I won today, woo hoo!!! Only my second time out. I spent the entire last week getting ready...got the fish finder, got a big iron fish-pole, got my skill level >300. Competition did seem kind of slow compared to last week. LOVE the trinket. I spent much of the remainder of the contest swimming around people's bobbers. The fish is quite cool, I kind of felt like the Grand Marshal swimming around and waving to admirer's. Oddly, much of the last hour of the contest there were very few pools spawning. People were complaining bitterly..

  13. Ramaniscence <Angler>, 1 year ago:

So...I just won again, and I'd have to say I'm feeling really good about myself. I would say the fishing competition has GOT to be the biggest rush you can experience in WoW.

Hopefully that achievement is retro-active, else I might have to upset some people AGAIN D:
