2k casts, no rat. 1.5k no crafty. I suck at fishing and am about to give up!

You shouldn't pay attention too much to the amount of casts. Just fish for half an hour per day, it'll take maybe long to get what you want, but it won't get you frustrated if you don't. Half an hour of "wasted time" is peanuts.
Maybe you are right. I fished in the Dalaran sewer from 4pm to 12:30 am. I get up at 5am for work…. Maybe I’ll stick to a time limit. It’s hard though, I keep saying next cast will be the one, if I stop now I’ll miss it.

My willpower is about as good as yours :D
My trick to avoid sleep deprivation is to only keep enough lures in my bags to give me the latest time I want to fish to.It's amazing how the thought of stopping to buy more lures,or ride to the bank for more makes me think 'ok,bedtime' :)On the plus side,I've now caught my Ratty,so no need to stand in the sewer for hours on end...unless there's a soaring demand for Magic Eaters on my AH ;)
I agree with the "fish for X amount of time" then quit idea. I also used 6-12 lures in my pack to keep track of time. When they ran out I did something else for a while.
Bottom line is you can't get too discouraged with the rat or any of the purely random achievements. El said "it isn't healthy" and I agree. It took me over 3k casts to get the one that didn't get away and well over 4k casts to get the rat. But...having all the fishing achievements as a Death Knight gave me the motivation to keep fishing.
I too am a DK :) Maybe I should consider it a balancing out , as I caught "The One that Didn't Get Away" in under two hours in Mulgore.

Try going for the 15 pounder in Mulgore. I know a few people who have gotten the achievement done in one night there.
It took around 800 catches. Got this pet :O)
Easy achi - as same as IF or Ogr or even Coins. The only factor is a time :O)Can't decide if I'm going to give up on this rat tonight and go for an easier achievement or not... If I do end up clocking another 3-4 hours wish me luck. I fear I may enter a state of depression if I don't fish him up tonight :( (I'm joking. I actually think i'll be a little sad once I'm done with all of these achievements... I like fishing)
I used to fish for about 10-30min in the sewers everytime the cooking daily sent me down there (still levelling, don't want to spend too much time fishing).
That said, it took me around 230-240 casts to catch this guy. I couldn't believe it considering my bad luck in catching Mr Pinchy.
I still had 5minutes left on my lure so I thought I better test my luck and fished in the wishing fountain for coins I picked up 4 gold, 2 silver and 1 copper!
While the rest of the achievements were a real pain... This was my lucky one i guess. Took me only 220 casts... I also support the time limit method :). Otherwise i wouldnt have been sane today.... Good luck with this one!
I got lucky with this one. Fished for 1/2 hour one day....nothing. The next day I gave myself 10 minutes. Got him on the 5th cast. Next comes Mr. Pinchy....
Good luck.Yeah, I think in the end everything balances out. After hearing how hard it was for so many to complete the one tht didnt get away, I feel ok about this one taking so long. I caught the one that didnt get away rather easily. So since Iron Jaw and the Rat didnt come easy makes it ok.
