[Contests] stranglethorn extravaganza: pole or trinket?

  1. bendez <Angler>, 2 years ago:

If you win the stranglethorn extravaganza, which reward would you take? and why?

i would take the trinket since +fishing doesnt really mean anything now. Also turning into a fish is always nice :)

  2. Vanaddar <Angler>, 2 years ago:

Pole for me. "It looks ike Nat Pagle himself used this". Nuff said.

  3. Rigami <Angler>, 2 years ago:

    Win twice and get both.

  4. Shircon <Salty>, 2 years ago:

i was on a "MUST HAVE IT NOW" phase after i read about the trinket on els site so i took it first but i am one of the fortunate to have won both....i was also VERY AND EXTREMELY UPSET when they nerfed the trinket....i loved cruising on top of the water.

  5. Saza <Salty>, 2 years ago:

I took the fishing pole. As a master fisherman you should have the best fishing pole in game.
    WTB unique look for it!

  6. Stikman <Salty>, 2 years ago:

When I won, I took the pole. To me it was a no-brainer. The trinket, while really cool, is something I would rarely ever use. But the pole gets used everyday and is still the best pole in the game. When wotlk was announced, I was afraid my trustly pole would get benched in favor of one of the new ones, but by the looks of it, Blizz intends to keep this pole as the best pole in the game. I just wish they would update the graphics of it to look as cool or cooler than the new ones. Also upgrading it to epic status would be a nice touch being that it is quite a bit harder to get and better than the epic pole in the game now.

  7. jeraz <Salty>, 2 years ago:

i never won it but i would go for the pole, like stikman said there is a much bigger chance that you will use the pole more than the trinkent and the pole is and (i'm pretty sure) will be the best fishing pole in the game. i also agree that the pole needs to look a bit cooler or somthing because if you look at the jeweled or ghost pole's from the dalaran daily's they look much cooler..

  8. Alaylith <Angler>, 2 years ago:

Back then I was really not sure what to take.

I won long before BC, so the extravaganza pole was the best for Alliance (the Horde had their quest pole from Desolace), but I had more interest in the trinket.

So the first time I choose the trinket.
Some weeks later I got the pole and I am still using it (even after being able to buy the pole from the Kaluak). ^.^

As you said, the +fishing isn't so important anymore but the sad thing about the trinket is the 30 seconds cooldown. I still got it in my bag, but I just don't use it anymore. I am way faster just swimming instead of waiting until I can use the trinket (and now of course you got flying, so it's even less usefull).
It's only a fun item for very rare moments - but then it is still awesome. :D

I used to always say that u were better off taking the pole but when I heard about cataclysm I changed my turn-in macro for the trink. Won the trink and am going to keep trying for the pole. Faster swim speed I think will come in handy for cataclysm; maybe even keep it equipped the entire leveling time.

I got the fishing pole when I won it and I'm glad I did. Now that there's a Sea Turtle the swim speed bonus of the trinket is obsolete.

As for the underwater breathing part of the trinket, I have my trusty ring for that :)

Hook of the Master Angler still has it's uses, it's useable indoors when you can't mount up on the turtle for the speed boost...

  12. Ingensu <Salty>, 2 years ago:

I took the trinket. :D The pole's cool, but the bonus just wasn't enough for me tbh.

The trinket's great because it's unique. Everyone can get some kind of fishing pole, but you can only turn into a fish if you win the contest and pick that reward. It's very nice for when I go out mining because I can reach underwater nodes very quickly. If I know I'm going to be swimming, I equip the trinket ahead of time. :D It's a real time-saver, and nothing beats turning into a fish at random!

    I've got both.

  15. Thalen <Salty>, 2 years ago:

It was a very tough choice for me. I loved the idea of the pole and the +fishing, but when I won it was the first week of the tournament, and the thought of being the only person on the server with the trinket to show off won me over. And BOY did I show it off! I met a lot of people swimming around with that, some of then I still keep in contact with.

I did go back and get the pole though ;-)

  16. Marlburo <Extremely Salty>, 2 years ago:

back in the day I felt the pole was the only way to go. but since they came out with all the cool looking poles (jeweled, bone, kaluak) I find i like the flash more than the extra skill points

  17. Lou Buitton <Angler>, 1 year ago:

I have both and what no one mentions is that the trinket actually kinda sucks (especially for locks as it's only 5% faster than Unending Breath).

*It has a 30 second cooldown when equipped so you have to plan ahead.
*You pop out of form whenever you hit air bubbles which is very annoying.
*Any damage or casting breaks form.

    DEFINATELY pole first.

  18. Lou Buitton <Angler>, 1 year ago:

..as far as all the 'oh i wish the pole looked cooler'...barf.

the pole rocks because its simple. it speaks for itself. the last thing i want is a pole that might draw any attention away from my incredibly over-sized, ridiculously-monstrous, outlandishly-stupid-even-for-a-fantasyworld "cloth" shoulders. ....or my similiary stupendous "caster" sword that's about 1/2 my size.

the pole is nice change from the average over-done epic items. i sooooo hope it doesn't get updated.

  19. Minivini <Salty>, 1 year ago:

I like the way the pole looks. It's the best item in the game but just looks like any old rod, it's understated. Maybe I like that because I am British.

Anyway the key thing for me is that it goes really well with my fishing gear, compared to the more "fancy" poles that you would never actually see anyone in real life using.

  20. Grank <Salty>, 1 year ago:

The last two comments gave me food for thought. I've always wanted an overhaul to the look of the Arcanite Fishing Pole, but on reflection I'd rather have it stay the same than become some gaudy monstrosity like the Northrend poles. I'd like a simple change like keeping the same model and making the pole electric blue or some other subtle change to let people know that you aren't using a plain old Strong Fishing Pole.

Edit: In response to the original question: I went pole first then trinket for my second win. No angler's gear is complete without that pole.
