[Contests] Stranglethorn Vale / Kalu'ak Derby Competition - Need Help / Tips / Tricks!

  1. Stalyn <Angler>, 2 years ago:

Last Sunday and This Sunday/Saturday, I tried the STV competition for the first time, altogether twice, and the Derby once, for the first time. This is on a Normal server, and I am an Undead Frost DK with Find Fish, +5 Fishing Boots and a +5 Rod.

Last Sunday, I started in the northern STV area and stayed around that area, catching 24 Tastyfish before the inevitable announcement of the Master Angler took place. I was discouraged, but knew that I would get better. I blamed it on the poor aim of the Lure.

This Saturday, I tried the Fishing Derby. I started in the Heart of the River in Sholazar Basin, and met with a Blood Elf. We half-grouped together, she buffed me with battle buffs and I buffed her with Path of Frost. Kind of an unfair trade considering the battle buffs will help me in no way, but whatever. Anyways, I see a pair of people come along, one of them a dwarf. The dwarf fishes the pools I am at, and I think, 'Damn douchebag.' But hey, it's a competition and I can't really blame him. The contest begins, and there are no pools to fish so I fly up the river(s) quickly and within the first 10 minutes the winner is announced, I have only fished about 3 or 4 pools and caught about 8 Pygmy Suckerfish. I am discouraged.

Today (Sunday), I tried the competition again with a better feeling of winning, as I am in a good spot and I see no people around the pool. I spot a few people coming in with mounts and there is a Night Elf slightly above the area that I was planning on heading. How dare him! >:[ So the contest begins and suddenly the pools disappear, I wasn't sure if they disappeared or not but soon enough I found more pools. There are just WAY. TOO. MANY. PEOPLE. FISHING. I mean god, there are always at the least 1 person fishing at a pool, only twice in the contest I found a lone pool. Again the Master Angler is announced, with the same unlucky number as the last one, twenty-four tastyfish.

That is where YOU come in! You tell me about all your tips and tricks, lend me a hand, and I could within the next 6 weeks win the STV Fishing Extravaganza (Or the Fishing Derby, really want that Arcanite Rod though)! I hope I do win within the next 6 weeks at least, since Booty Bay is getting screwed I don't think the contest will exist anymore and there goes my chance to get the best fishing rod EVAR (as of now). I already know all the tips listed on the STV Contest Strategy page.

Stalyn, don't give up, first off winning the Kalu'ak Derby is like winning the lottery. I have friends who have tried for it weekly for the past 3-4 months + and still have yet to win whereas I won mine on the second try. As for the Stranglethorn Vale Derby win goes many things need to be taken into account, first of which is the total amount of people trying to win. Obviously if you're on a server that when you /who and you see 25+ people on your side going for a win it makes it a bit harder. Even though there may be many people trying to win you'll still have the same odds as them if not better odds if you do everything right. As for things you need to keep in mind is that every second counts, you want to have as little down time from not fishing as possible, use speed buffs and mount up etc. What I have noticed when trying to help others is they don't know a few easy tricks obvious ones being set your hearthstone booty bay, if you want to use a lure get yourself a glow worm as it only needs to be applied every hour so you're not wasting time luring again in 10 minutes, have your fish finding ability on, if you don't have a water walking ability carry a few elixir of water walking and pop them when you're mounted going to the next node, also realize that there are a few bugged pools that are too close to shore and you'll never get a cast to land in them. Everything is pretty simple just don't get complacent and forget the easy stuff. As far as being polite and respecting others nodes that's a gray area. You'll find many of the opposing faction or even you own will come to your nodes, after all it's a competition and everyone wants to win. Finding a good starting point is key, many try to start as far away from Booty Bay as possible and work their way down the coast. The best spots are of course just away from others. On my server I've noticed many start near either Grom'gol, up by the Yojamba Isle or the east side beach of Stranglethorn Vale, you just need to find a low populated spot. In cataclysm both derby's are still around so don't worry about not having a chance of getting an arcanite fishing pole ever. The best thing to do when going into these competitions is don't expect to win right off the bat, doing so will only frustrate and make you want to give up if you don't win your first few times, good luck and keep trying, you'll win eventually!

Fishing skill doesn't affect any pool catches, other than that thanks! :]

Exactly, good clarification, that's why I wrote "if you want to" instead of just "use a lure" etc., but no problem at all and again good luck! ;)

Keep at it, that's the best advice. Took me about 2 months to get mine. Torture has given solid advice already so i wont repeat it all good luck!

    OMG GUYS
I was just preparing for the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, this time I was gonna be in the North-West Coastal Howling Fjord. I was just fishing out some pools so they would be more concentrated, even going down to the Kalu'ak Village down there. As I was fishing some pools..
    I found a SEA TURTLE :D
I was frozen for a moment or two before I really decided to loot it.

At 420 fishing skill and only mass-fishing in Northrend once, I found a SEA TURTLE :D

I did lose the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, but I had some pretty good chance of winning so I don't feel all that bad. My only real competition was a Nightelf Druid and even she couldn't keep up with me because of the instant-cast of the Broom :D

Edit: right after this I did the Horseman daily, and I ALSO GOT THE REINS! >:D
Woo today is my lucky day :D

Update guys, I won the STV Fishing Extraveganza at 18 minutes in! :)
    People were like 'Dude, seriously?'
    and 'wtf bbq'
    It was AWESOOOME :D
Finally the Arcanite Rod is mine <3
Didn't even prepare for it as much as the last 2 times
Fourth Week of STV Fishing Tourney and the Arcanite Rod is mine <3
Here's a tip: Fish in the wild shore south of BB. It gives you tastyfish wonderfully.

TODAY I BECAME "SALTY DUFFUS" It has I nice ring to it :)
On Lothar The Saturday contest seems to be less popular so I focused on it. A simple tip that I stooped ignoring made a huge difference. I used the Blizzard keybinding to set a camera view so i was directly on top of my bobber. I was able to know for sure. If my bobber was in a pool. BUT EVEN better the constant distance made it much easier to judge the distance to stand from the pools.

I am going to try to get salty on another toon and I think I am going to put a small piece of tape on my monitor to help align myself to the pools better

Not often do I do this, but I needa QQ.

Almost every single week since it started I have been going to Northrend to try win this fishing derby and get me the best fishing boots in the game. Not only have I never won it, but I have never even seen a Blacktip Shark, and I often fish for the whole time. By Thrall's beard and balls what does it take to win this thing?! What's it been now, a year or two, and I still can't catch one single shark! It's really starting to piss me off, to the point that I don't know if I even want to bother wasting my time there anymore!

That's it anglers. Just needed to vent a bit. Thanks...Jgy
