Thanks for all the tips - I didn't win today.
I tried to fish at the elemental island, but a horde hunter followed me around to the pools. The competition on my server is brutal!
Some of the pools gave up other fish than tasty even after cast landed right in the middle.
That's ok, I'll try again next week - this was only my third time in the competition.
And thank you for the wonderful site - it has been a great help.

Thank you all very much. I finally won today. All your advice was extremely helpful. I stayed in the same 6 node vicinity.

Grats to the winners! Unfortunately, I didn't win today. That's ok, though - first time out in a while. I learned a few things that I can use for next time. Not spamming here, but I've started a blog detailing my fishing experience as I try to achieve my Salty title, if anyone's interested. Feel free to leave comments, copy\paste, or whatever.
http://saltybals.blogspot.com/
It has some notes on what I've learned about the Extravaganza and other fishing related things (from this site\forum (thanks El & everyone else here!) , and from my own limited experience). Hope you can find something useful there.
oh, and...
*shakes fist* NEXT WEEEEEK!!!! :)

My first win, I was level 62 (post WotLK). I died on the way out to Yojamba Isle just before the contest began. Spirit ressed and ran out to Yojamba again.
I'm Alliance, most of the contestants on my server (seemingly) are horde...so the less interaction I deal with the better. (pvp server)
Anyway, the isle itself, and the west side of the bay just north of the isle produces about 7 pools. With tracking on, I can generally tell if I need to run north to fish the two pools just north of Yojamba isle, or if I can stay on the island itself.
Anyway, first attempt an 80 killed me two times during the competition, and I lost with 33 fish. I was level 58.
Second try, I won, and also got steelscale crushfish. I was level 62.
Third try, I lost with 39 fish. I was level 71.
Fourth try, I won and also pulled another steelscale crushfish. Level 80.
Biggest advice: Don't go to Yojamba isle for the sake of fishing at Yojamba isle. Don't avoid it because of rumors of twinks. Find a spot, regardless of where it is, and fish it until you know where the pools are. Just rotate between 5 or 6 closely-located pools.
Additionally, water walking ability helps. I use path of frost.
One more thing, you may think you're wasting time sitting in one place, but when you're running from one node to the next, mount up. Epic riding ability, 100% speed increase. It takes 3 seconds to get mounted. If running on foot from one node to the next will take more than 6 seconds, it's faster to mount and ride.
I ALWAYS mount between nodes, as soon as I see the node disappear. I don't autoloot, I actually right click, then click on the window that pops up, but as mentioned before that can't hurt anything either. It would be helpful to have a spotter, but it isn't absolutely necessary.
You don't have to gank the 19 twinks who happen to be nearby, but if you can land a line well, you'll get more fish than him if he tries to fish with you...my experience, however, is that on a pvp server, a lot of twinks go it alone (since they aren't trying to win, just to get the boots) and they'll be trying to avoid YOU. If you don't gank them, they probably won't call in their 80 buddies to keep you from winning.

After 2.5 months, I FINALLY won the STV Tournament today. I couldn't believe it... I came so close so many times before. Last week I had 40 fish, but someone turned it in an instant before I did.
This forum has been an immense help in finally achieving it. I ended up going to the Zandalar island to do it, and despite having 4 twinks on my back the whole time, I kept cool, fished a little in the pools they also shared and moved on, and always ended at the next pool the first. I also checked out the stretch of land off the island, where there's some crocolisks, and it netted me 2 pools all by myself.
I now have the Salty title, the STV Content fishing pole, and an Eternium line: just to confirm the alignment of the stars today, I got it during the tournament. :)

I would like to thank the site..and forum for it's assistance today in Winning the contest....
I was...on my own... no guildies to help,
I'm a warrior... lvl 80... no buffs or anything....I fished on the opposite side of the bay...from the Grom'Gol Base Camp.....where I have always competed and basically stayed within a few hundred yards... I never got as far as the Islands to the West.
How did I win.... Sheer perserverance........
Every Sunday since I could get to SV... about 9 months now.... I competed.... got to 37 a few times.Yes.. you have to get into the pool.... no I'm not sure if its better to run or to mount.... and I'm sure luck had something to do with it.... Usually the place is full of people... It wasn't today!
I got to 10 fish in 3 minutes... then it slowed... no pools... but instead of running around... I just sat back... and 1 minute later... 3 more pools spawned.... I had 20 fish after 10 minutes... not great I thought.... usually won at about 17 - 18 minutes.
But luck was on my side... The casts dropped in..... I only pulled 3 other fish... and just when I needed it... at 37 fish... another pool spawned 10 yards away....
Funny.... a chap ran up... and stopped... cast and then pulled up his line and ran off!..... and he left me the pool.....at 39... I pulled an Oily Blackmouth.... and then cast again... luck... dead centre... and the first chance of a bite...gave me the last one.
I hearthed... and I have on old laptop.... which, believe me..... does not move fast!...
I hit the bollard on the way out.... and nearly ran off the edge....As I clicked... I remembered the comments here...about having decided on your pick...
and I won!.....
Don't give up... I'm not special.... I have practiced, and practiced... on pools to better my judgement... I have caught some 5439 fish since the Achievements came online.
If I can win it.... anyone can.... you just have to be there... and keep at it

First try since I rerolled Horde to Dentarg EU. Had a month of experience from my old Ally server without success, and neither did I hit the jackpot today, only had 28 when winner was announced.
Had some pretty bad luck though, came to STV 45 minutes before the competition to map pools.. found a nice place with like 7-9 pools really close to each other Northwest of Grom'gol, the beach opposite to the water elemental and Yojimba isles. But when the competition began.. almost none of those pools spawned. :(
So I kind of panicked and started to move to other places after running back and forth my planned fishing spot without finding anything. But well, new week, new try. Probably trying the same location if I'd happen to be less unlucky this time.

Don't give up, that's the best advice I can offer. I won the contest on my shaman twice, mostly due to the tips I got here. Took a couple months of really refining my technique to get it done. Water Walking is a huge advantage for me, so I always do the old fishing dailies to stock up on water walking potions for my alt. I need to get her to 60 though, because, as previously noted, epic riding is a must-have.
I'm one achievement away from the Salty title. Rare fish are a pain...

Well, I finally won today after months of trying each and every sunday.I didn't do anything more than usual, except that i had two guildies spotting pools for me,and I was very lucky with junk fish, so I'm a VERY happy paladin right now :D
This has to be one of the best Mother's Day presents ever...the best going to the card my daughter made a couple of years ago with a pic of my pally on it :)
Best of luck to you all still trying to win it...keep at it...perseverance DOES pay off in the end :D

Thank you for all your help! I won my first competition because of this site, and also from extreme luck. I'm not normally big into fishing, but since the Salty title came out I thought I should start.
I am on a pve server so I had some luck with not having to deal with horde players and their friends. I started preparing 45 minutes before hand. I grabbed some swiftness potions, hotkeyed my fishing, turned on find fish, and had my boyfriend to scout out ahead. He did not have Find Fish, but that didn't seem to make a difference.
I actually got discouraged from fishing on the Yojamba Isle because there were already 2 people there. I came back after changing my mind a bunch between coastal fishing and the isle. There was only 1 person there, but they seemed to second guess and left. SO I guess I was very lucky. The only problem I had was being unsure of whether my bobber actually landed in the pool or not. There were always 3 fishing nodes up at least. Most ppl who came to the isle just fished one node and left.
Dunno if this helps or not!- Character: Sevayne (US).

I actually had my worst preformance yet only having 20 fish when they called a winner. I think i only had 1 whole pool to myself and in my mind if you dont get a few to yourself you wont win. However I did catch 2 keefers! Im glad to have the hat but its a bummer I cant turn the other in for the boots.

Won for the first time today, *and* went on to catch Crafty later in the day. Plus... during the tourney the boots dropped, but I was so clickky-clickky that I instantly recast and lost them. All things considered... it was a damn fine day of fishing.

Hi all, I just joined, and I started playing WoW in november 08.
I started fishing a few months ago, and thanks to this site, I won the STV tournament on my first try! Now, I have a question...
Since this tournament is once a week, that means there are 52 winners a year, around 220(Per Server) since the game came out? (Maybe less, with multiple wins by one person, and I am unsure when the tournament started).
Now I am working on my salty title and I am very close to achieving this, my question is, is this fair? Was the Salty title supposed to really be this exclusive? Have they ever mentioned the low amount of winners?
I enjoy have things that are almost unique in a game, expecially in an MMO where people always out-do you, and having the salty title will surely give me a little uniqueness, but I still find it quite harsh to have such a low probability of winning the tournament (Besides transferring to the lowets populated server and trying it there).
Anyways, keep trying guys, I am certain you will win!
