[Contests] STV Extravaganza Support Group

  1. Alifana <Angler>, 11 months ago:

Finally got mine yesterday after several weeks of trying to get this done! I had first been just running up and down the east coast along with all the other FE noobs, and kept getting myself frustrated because of how poorly I was doing. I got something like 21 fish in the 20 minutes it took for the winner the first time, 27 in about 24 minutes the next time. I don't remember any other times other than yesterday and a week previous to winning, but it was just bad. I really believe it was the tip by Acquiesce that made all the difference in the world:
"Just because you're moving, doesn't mean you're winning."

Seriously, I cannot stress this enough. I went from not even getting 30 in the time needed, to getting 40 the very next time and losing by 2 seconds (literally, the druid in front of me beat me while I was at the goblin and had just hearthed before me). And then this week I won in 18 minutes which included looting 15 low level fish (several oilys, eels, firefin, and stranglekelp). At the pace I was going at from the start, I probably would have been done in 14 minutes or so, because I had 18 fish in the first 6 minutes. lol it's bad when you start realizing you have won before the first 10 minutes has passed.

The only other thing I would suggest for people is that when you do start doing VERY well, keep calm. This contest is stressful as hell, and I was actually jittery as I was hearthing (both this week when I won and last week when I lost it), and just reminding yourself to keep focused helps a lot.

Once a few friends of mine win this as well I might post where I did it at, but at this time, on my server, it's WIDE open with only one other person competing with me in the past two weeks.

Good luck all and thanks again Acquiesce!

    Hello all!
The title Salty seemed out of my grasp before this weekend. I didn't have the coin achievement, the rare fish and, most importantly, the fishing tournament. With a little help from my guildies I managed to win it (first time I've tried it too!) and I'd like to share my experience with you guys!
I started fishing little south of Grom'gol. First thing's first, I've been an avid fisherman for a long time and I have to say that my experience in catching pools of fish really helped on this. You really learn how to position yourself in front of a pool to make sure your bobber has a better chance of landing on it. Also, you get a good experience knowing if your bobber is actually in the pool range, so you know if you need to recast it or not. If you guys really wanna go for it serious, make sure you practice a lot!
A good suggestion to practice is going for Dark Herring if you guys haven't done the "One that got away" achievement. There are plenty of schools in Howling Fjord and I hear it has a 1% chance to drop from them. But the practice is the most important part!
Going back to the tournament, I had a group of 4 people helping me. I was always escorted by a ret paladin. He was doing two things for me. One: Scouting the next pool. Two: killing anyone within 50 yards of me. He had a vital role in making sure I didn't get ganked. I only got griefed a couple of times by a shaman who was also going for the tournament but my buddy killed him, so he was just rezzing and trying to put me in combat. But nothing major.
My 3 other buddies were a rogue, druid and another ret paladin. They were basically walking everywhere killing any horde trying. They didn't take a lot of time griefing alliance bobbers because I told them I trusted my abilities of fishing and they gladly didn't let me down!
I'm a shaman so I had water walk on all the time. I highly recommend you guys getting a shaman to help you because it is VERY useful, especially since you can mount with water walking now!
Took me about 20 minutes and I won it. Remember, when you turn in make sure you choose your reward (I chose the pole, obviously) or else you'll get the "Please choose a reward" error!
After winning the fishing event it gave me motivation go to for the rare fish and the coins, which I did and now I'm Salty!
Sorry if my english is a little confusing, it's not my first language. And good luck everyone!!!!

people like you is what made me give up on salty for months. both factions have it hard enough with everyone and their mother bringing 10 friends with mammoths to block everyone elses bobbers, but now you're actively telling friends to gank everyone else. that's not what fishing is about.

  3. Ehrinn <Angler>, 10 months ago:

I have been regularly trying to win the tournament for many weeks in row, only missing once (out of embarrassment I won't go into an actual time frame - suffice it to say I've been trying for more than 12 weeks straight). And I gotta tell you, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Every Sunday, I enter STV dressed for a war on Tastyfish. Armed with the fishing boots which are the only fishing drop I've ever received, at least one dozen helpings of Captain Rumsey's Lager, at least half a dozen Elixirs of Water Walking, a pair of gloves I bought and got enchanted with +2 fishing (because every little bit helps), and plenty of lures, I head out to the shore and I try to win.

And, inevitably, I lose. I have tried both coastlines (west and east) and read every single strategy (no exaggeration) I can find. I have also, every single week, made an attempt to whisper to the current winner. I have used trade to randomly speak with those who have won, and one week I even got more than ten people in my guild to help me (finding nodes, etc.). It wasn't until this Sunday that I was able to actually speak to the winner - every other time, it's been a horde winner. So I asked him, how long have you been trying to win?

He responded that it was his first time. Stories like this make me want to throw my computer in frustration, denounce the World of Warcraft, and write hate mail to Blizzard. I'm going nuts setting my hearth, turning on auto loot, downloading fishing addons, and randomly demanding fishing tips from past winners, and I can't seem to get closer than 30 fish - and that's at my utter and absolute best.

I am no Sunday-only angler. I actively fish four or more days every single week NOT counting my every-Sunday tournament hell, and I provide plenty of fish feasts for my guild. I have every single other fishing achievement required for the Salty title, and I know all the tips and tricks. I set my hearth. I show up early, come prepared, and have a certain piece of shore where I operate. I use water walking, I move quickly and for close nodes I pop into travel form (I'm a druid) to outrun the competition. I stare at my screen while fishing, disregarding chat, vent, and even household accidents with the pets if that's what it comes to (life-threatening or otherwise catastrophic events notwithstanding). I aim for the center of every node, I re-cast when I'm off, and I cast straight-on rather than at an angle.

And I don't even get close. Every week, I catch around 25 fish and then watch in despair as the winner is announced by 2:25 server. I just don't get it, and I'm starting to lose my nerve. I know my guild is getting sick of me spewing all over gchat at 2:30 every Sunday, and I always seem to forget to re-set my hearth and find myself in Booty Bay later on in the day. I'm wasting my time, aggravating myself and don't seem to be getting any closer.

I have seven titles now, and the one I always really wanted remains completely out of reach. I have tried to fill the void with all these other names...but still I wish I was Salty. Short of offering at-large bribes to every would-be angler on the server, I don't know how I could possibly win this thing. If I'm already doing it all and can't get close, I have to wonder if there is no hope.

And I have to wonder how all the winners have managed this awesomely difficult feat. On my server, a winner is always announced by 2:25, so you can practically give up if you don't have a stack of Tastyfish by ten after. I don't know what other items I can get or what else to do to increase my chances of winning.

I am in the midst of fishing despair. Someone, please say something helpful.

the comp was won by 2:17 on my server this week...

sorry nothing helpful, I'm in your boat. (dam that hearth at bb you always forget right!)

you know what thanks, I prob can't win this so I might quit WoW, its taking up too much time anyway.
I might spend this time at the gym or making money....

over and out..... Jon of Arc

  5. Utopia <Salty>, 10 months ago:

Ehrinn, everything you wrote describes my attempts down to a tee, but as I eventually found, no matter how prepared you are, there's always someone with better luck on junkfish/more friends to block/gank/generally disrupt, or who has better latency.
It will happen for you eventually...in my case I tried every single sunday for months on end till I finally struck lucky on a quieter day on my server (it happened to be Mother's Day in the UK, so less competition), so this might be a factor that you haven't tried yet...find a sunday national holiday of some sort that will keep other anglers away to up your odds.
You don't say whether the area you choose to fish in is a particularly good one,ie. not many other anglers in the area, because if it's busy, then it's time to find somewhere else, and if it is quiet, then still, try a new spot for a few weeks...it may be quiet because of low spawn rates there.

I know it's hard to stay positive, believe me, I also did a lot of swearing/emo/raging in guildchat, but you WILL get there in the end :D

Oh, and the HS senility? I did that aaaallllll the time, much to my guildmates' constant amusement :D
I still have to stop myself going in the inn to set my hs to BB even now when I'm just scouting for guildies who are trying to win, but I know one day I will end up in BB because I had a blonde moment ;)

Is it just me or has all fishing courtesy dissapeared since 3.1?

  7. Ehrinn <Angler>, 10 months ago:

Jon, I hope you don't give up on WoW altogether. I've been thinking about calling it quits on the tourney, but I won't let it drive me off the game.

Thanks for your post, Utopia. You're very encouraging, and I hope one day I'll be Salty, too! I was wondering, about how many attempts do you think it took before you finally won?

  8. Sauce <Salty>, 10 months ago:

    Kamaria wrote:

I think all courtesy has disappeared since 3.0 personally. I think 3.1 did a terrible injustice to fishing in this game; while the addition of new dailies was a cool idea, I don't like the idea of fishing becoming mainstream as it has. I liked having to work to skill up fishing; while the original (huge) cast time coupled with the possibility of not getting a fish was a pain in the ass, the change they made afterward put a nice balance into the trade, and yes, I leveled fishing on separate toons before and after the change. Adding the turtle mount, as cool as it is, also fucked things up IMHO.

As for the tourney..... don't give up hope guys. You have to keep the 'next week' mindset in your head, as many of us who have won also lost many times. Yesterday I took my alt to STV, got 39/40 when a winner was announced, and that was the first time I did the tourney in months. Also, I think they made a change to pool drop rates because I only caught 2 junk fish.

  9. InfectedZombie <Salty>, 10 months ago:

I finally won this week and have fished every Sunday for the last 3.5 months plus off and on over the years. I fished the east coast and there were very few other people. way less twinks since the item level change for the rare fish prize. Being that it was the first day of Noblegarden helped I am sure. Next week is children's week so something similar may happen. Don't loose hope. Luck is a big factor, sun shines on every dog's butt someday I guess. Thanks El for the great site it would have been near impossible with out it!

Glad I could help keep your spirits up :)
As to how many tries, I can't remember the dates off the top of my head, but I only missed 1...yes 1, week from when achievements were very first announced, to when I won on (UK)Mothering sunday(22nd March).
That's not counting the countless times I used to compete when the competition first went live, way back when.

  11. Ehrinn <Angler>, 10 months ago:

    Another Sunday, Another Loss.

After a ton of daily-doing, I -finally- got a usable drop in my bag of fishing treasures - the spun line for the pole. Quite convinced this was the extra little bit I needed, I boldly headed to the Ruins by the Crystal Shore to try my new fishing points (and new strategy, courtesy of all y'all). Firmly convinced that today would be the day, I intensely fished until I got 40 - then hurriedly hearthed back to Booty Bay.

Somewhere in the middle of the running and elixir-drinking, the tourney had already been won...and I'd missed the announcement long ago. Again, I didn't even get close.

I'm thinking about switching realms. Not permanently, but to win. I play on Runetotem, which is a veritable hotbed of angling activity. Anyone else want to talk about their realm? The tournament is always won in mine in twenty minutes or less. Tell me about yours; I need to go somewhere where I can have more time. Not that I want to take it away from any of you, and I can't switch realms for several weeks. But I'm scouting locations.

  12. Tankster <Salty>, 10 months ago:

Well, I won this contest yesterday, on my second try, in like 15 minutes. Under 20 anyway.

I've only been in this contest once before, before patch 3.1. First time I was at about 27 fish when the contest was won and it was very frustrating. I got 40 fish in like 30 minutes or so.

Yesterday, I started fishing at the same spot. The contest started like 2 minutes before 2pm, while I was just charging a random mob. Killed that poor fella in a sec and headed to water. Luckily, there was a pool like 5-6 seconds of walking away from the spot. Started fishing, got only two fish from the first school.

All around was quiet, the same as like the first time. No ally, no competition. I've found another school, got another 3 or 4 and boom! Like several feet away, FOUR schools spawned on an area of about 20 seconds of walking (from first to last school). Fished those four with no others nearby. Then moved to another one when I've heard a "charge" sound. Oh, I forgot, the main channel was fool of other guys complaining about ganking allies. I didn't even turn my head, nor changed my perspective, I was concentrating on the bobber, thinking that I will get as many fish I could before I die. The ramblings continued behind me while I finished the spot.

Without even looking at what happened, I moved a bit north to another school. Two allies were moving around and the "charge" sound again. Well, apparently what happened is that two hordies (warriors) (I am horde and warriror as well) were fishing not very far from my spots and got ganked by a group of three allies (rogue and two mana users - didn't check the classes, I just saw the targets). They were getting revenge and were trying not to let those allies win. Got invited to a group and I've found myself having two bodyguards. The guys were great and very helpful, I got sapped and in combat several times but every time I was just getting back to fishing, not fighting at all, while they took care of the enemies. While the allies were on res timers, they were moving back and forth near water to find other schools.

So, all in all, I was very lucky and won in like no time. The 40th fish was a pain, I caught at least 5 other fish before catching it and every time I was keeping my finger on the hs shortcut.

By the way, I am not into the pvp thing at all, I don't like it (maybe it's because I suck at it) and I thought that the first time I would get attacked during the contest, I would give up - spending time fighting is not good news for your chances of winning.

Editing: Oh, by the way, some people just can't lose. After turning in and getting my fishing pole, I got ganked like several times in BB. Two or three hours later, while fishing in the Dalaran fountain, one of those ally guys was covering ONLY my bobber. I was not frustrated at all, after all I was using the best fishing rod in game :P He eventually got bored and went away.

    Well Im Finally SALTY ....

I pretty much kicked the contest in the teeth today ... Nobody around where i fished . I has zero pool misses and had 30 fish by the 8 min mark . My heart was pounding as i new then i should win unless other areas were slow as by me .... But i got my 40 and Hearthed at the 12 min mark and Won by 13 min in .... Only 8 Trash fish as well .. Was so dam fast i wonder if it was a record lol

Good Luck Everyone , Its do able just keep at it it took me 4 months of slaming my head against the screen after being real close or not even close alot .

  14. Suola <Angler>, 9 months ago:

Won this last week, have been trying almost every week since New Year. So about 20 attempts, over five months, given two I missed where I couldn't be on the server on time.

Finally won after 17mins, fishing around the troll ruins on the east coast.

Using water-walking potions and HS at BB.

This and the Skyshatter have been the worst things I've given myself to earn in the game. Awful.

Tips I'd give: Get to BB and set HS early - comedians like to kill the innkeeper. I lost at least one competition because I had to waste time waiting for him to respawn. Get there a bit earlier and set HS.

Use water walking, potions or spell. It's only a small edge - but that edge'll win you it, making it easy to use some pools land-bound types can't and making travel quicker.

I tried both west and east coast - I preferred east. Fewer nodes, but enough, and less competition. YMMV.

    edit: good luck.

  15. doofman <Salty>, 9 months ago:

I finally got the Salty title yesterday after my shockingly easy STV win (compared to all the other times I've tried over the months). I've fished both sides (usually East, sometimes West), and typically I'd start in the NE corner (of the fishable area) and work my way down. I've had anywhere between 20-39 fish caught before losing in the past, and at various different completion times, so I've definitely seen how much luck can play a difference. The last couple of weeks that I've done it have definitely been slower in terms of competition, but yesterday was shocking.

I started in the SE corner this time, mounted, and only mounted once more the entire time, when I was going from 39 to 40. I didn't see a soul, from fish 1-40, and had reasonably good luck with casting/drops, and just walked up the coast from pool to pool, so things went surprisingly quickly. All together it took between 15-20 min and I was able to win cleanly without anyone right on my heels.

Granted, I'm on a PvE server (Azjol-Nerub), so this may not apply to everyone, but I would agree with the above poster about the east side being better than the west, if nothing else because you really don't need water-walking nearly as much as you do on the west side.

Good luck to everyone else still trying!

PS. Those few seconds while I was hearthing and typing "40! FTW!" into my friends' chat were definitely the most exciting I've had in awhile playing WoW.

  16. bombcar <Salty>, 7 months ago:

Tried for my first time this weekend; hit the east shore of Stranglethorn, starting at the top. I had one elixer of water walking, level 76, with the walrus guy fishing pole.

I had 34 when the winner was announced. I think I spent a little too much time running between the upper part of the east coast and the lower. There were a few 80s in the area, RP server, no PVP, but enough that I had to bypass or stop fishing a pool at least twice.

Caught 8 or so junk fish.

  17. Jelly <Angler>, 7 months ago:

I need some support too :P

It was my second time this weekend, I ended up with 36 fish when they announced the winner after 17 minutes. This time, I made sure all my casts were good, had water walking pots stocked etc...I think it just was the luck factor that totally sucked.

There were times where I just ran around the island and waited for the spawns, as no pools would appear at all... Besides, there were 2 people in the prettymuch same place so it was hard to fish anything alone.

Still, I think it was a pretty OK attempt, so I will stay at the same spot and hope for a better luck next week ;-)

  18. Usagija <Angler>, 7 months ago:

After taking a few months off from fishing being entirely discouraged by STV to continue with Salty, I did my first STV this past weekend. Suffice it to say it didn't go well but I will definitely take some of these tips into account.

Does anyone have any advice for a good area with schools of fish that require minimal running between them? Or any strategies for a Druid? I have tons of water walking pots cause I'm an alchemist but I don't know what else can help. And do lures help at all even if I'm maxed at 450 because I feel like I catch an inordinate amount of junk fish.

  19. Rigami <Angler>, 6 months ago:

I got it yesterday in 17 minutes. Some suggestions based on what I did.

    1. Hearth in BB. At LEAST 30 mins before the tourney starts (I was sick the first time I hearthed 5 mins before tourney and couldn't get back).

    2. Arrive in STV at least 30 minutes before the tourney starts. Scout out the area to find where there are few people near the coast. This varies from server to server but in my case the north end tended to be more empty.

    3. I used Lager as my only buff. I did an AquaDynamic just before the tourney started but the time it takes to apply it is wasting time, while lager is instant buff.

    4. Kit up as much as you can. I have 450 fish, Fish tracking, Jeweled fishing pole, Fishing hat, fast mount and water walking pots. Also being at a level that is gray to the mobs in STV is a must.

    5. When getting your starting position if you can see 2 or more people within visible distance, move on.

    6. Recast if in doubt. It is better to spend 3-5 seconds recasting then to wait and get nothing. I have casting set to my middle mouse button to speed this up.

    7. Do not fish from someone elses node. Avoid if at all possible. Water walking is handy here to get away.

    8. If someone is following you try doubling back. Nodes respawn quite fast but if they followed you from the previous one they tend to move in the other direction. especially if there is a node nearby.

    9. I didn't use a macro, I watched the fish in my bag. What I did to do was split the first two tasty fish into two piles so I could watch at start of BP.

    10. Hearth as soon as you get 40. I would also recommend before the tourney practise the run from the inn to the vendor. I've messed that up once (fell in the water).

    11. Know exactly what it is you want to get when you win. I actually wasted 3 seconds not realising I had to pick one of them.

When I won, there were 3-4 others who were only 3 fish short. Once I hearthed I was in panic mode.

So the main points: PLAN PLAN PLAN!

  20. Jelly <Angler>, 6 months ago:

What area did you guys fish in successfully? Last two times I stayed on Yojamba the whole time. This week was a goddamn disaster.

Not only did two people aside from me start there, but no Pools would spawn anyhow. I therefore moved south and did a circle between Yojamba, Grom'Gol and the island with elementals...
