[Contests] STV Extravaganza Support Group

  1. Rigami <Angler>, 2 years ago:

If you are looking for place to fish the only thing I can recommend is you do the scouting 30 mins or so beforehand.

If there are 2 people in the area odds on more will arrive soon or they will jump your nodes. The other thing to watch out for is guild names, a large number of the same guild throughout the zone suggests they will running interference.

  2. Rigami <Angler>, 2 years ago:

Won it for the second week at 17 minute mark again.

The only other thing to add with fishing on your own node is try to keep within the same area of a group of nodes instead of running in one direction.

Anyway I got my rod and trinket now so I'm bowing it at this point. :)

  3. Jelly <Angler>, 2 years ago:

'Tis a sad day... It was my 5th time today. I caught my 40 at 17 minute mark, hearthed and just when I ported to the BB inn the winner was announced. :-(((

  4. Bartiler <Salty>, 2 years ago:

tis a sad day for me as well. I caught my first 20 fish in 5 minutes. Great start.. after that people showed up and started fishing in my pools, had to move around a lot etc. Well I caught my 40th 15 mintues later and right as I was hearthing the winner was announced.. Ive won this contest once on a pvp server but I transferred to a PVE server to try my hand and lemme tell you the competition is fierce. Was hoping to be one of the few to win it on a pve and pvp high pop servers.

  5. Juzamdjinn <Salty>, 2 years ago:

I had all the achievements for "Salty" except this one for a good 6 months. I fished the tournament nearly every Sunday and seemed to miss it by a few fish each week. Sometimes I'd get frustrated and not attend for a week or more. I decided to try the small troll island just for kicks one weekend.

Several minutes before it began I noticed a few people come by the island and I hoped they would just pass through.

Well the whistle blew and to my surprise their was no one else around, there were always 2-3 nodes spawned within yards of each other. I couldn't believe it.

After just 14 minutes I had 40, hearthed with my heart pounding, and chose the trinket.

I am 31 years old and acted like a school child when I saw my name across the screen, and had finally earned two of my most gratifying achievements in the game.

My wife just giggled and gave me a hug, she knew how important it was to me.

Don't give it up, the day will come......and when it does......well you'll just have to find out.

  6. Jelly <Angler>, 2 years ago:

I've been trying every week for 3 months and finally got it :)
Last tries were quite disastrous. I used to end with 28-40 fish when the winner was announced, and that's it.

This time, however, I finally got this streak of luck which I was missing before. It's been my second tiem fishing at the East Coast (usually sticked to mid-West coast). For the first 8-9 minutes I got most of my pools all to myself, so when other competitors started swarming my area after the 10min mark, I was much ahead already.

I finished in 17 minutes, so the time isn't all that great (usually it's 16m on my server). I squeeled like a little girl after getting the achievement and my hands trembled for good 30 minutes afterward.

So yeah, I would agree - do not give up, try week afetr week and you will get it at some point for sure. :-))

  7. Spackler <Angler>, 2 years ago:

All the tips are good, I'm sorry though you are doing yourself a HUGE injustice thinking this is a solo endeavor.

YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME:
    1) Make a raid.
    2) Hearthstone at Booty Bay. kicking a dead horse

Raid Group 1: You and a friend
    3) You fish ONLY! No distractions, no other actions, if you're not moving to next closest pool to fish, you are FISHING.
    4) Get your best friend to help out, scouting pools, giving you water walking: whatever support he can provide - NO PVP

    Raid Groups 2 -3
    5) The best PvP team you can find. Sick on the opposite faction, up and down both shores. Make sure they know DO NOT CORPSE CAMP ANYONE. You need to kill all opposite faction anglers at least once.

    Raid Groups 4-5
    6) This is your same faction squad. They need Kodos, Mammoths and fishing poles. If they are close to you, have them cover pools with mounts, or fish the far away pools as fast as possible.

    7) Groups 2-5 need to understand they are buying time for you. All they need to do is delay the fisher a pool or 2, or 1 corpse run, and their job is complete. Once they throw a fisher off time, move on to the next one.

This strat works flawlessly. We have used it to own the Tourney and it is 8-0-1 so far. The 1 draw being the sunday we didn't have a fisher in the tournament, but held off the Tournament being won til the raid started that night at 6pm.

You can say what you want about courtesy, blah blah blah. You have to play win, you can either control your destiny or let it be controlled for you.

  8. Genom <Salty>, 2 years ago:

So, after winning this contest way back when it started on my warlock, on the second week, I have since changed to a DK, and let me tell ya, bad luck is really getting me down.

I got everything else for my new Salty title pretty easy and quickly (Pinchy droipped in 24 casts, vs 18 months of fishing last time)

But every week I end up at 38-39 when the winner gets anounced. so depressing. Half the time it's because I get a yellowtail 2-3 times in a row and done.

Oh well, here's hoping for next week. Cause I must do this achievement vs the enw one, because I must have the fishing rod!

  9. trespasser <Angler>, 2 years ago:

Really, this achievement is only dictated by luck if you let it. Some social engineering will get you this title. I won this achievement 2 weeks in a row, for the rod and the trinket...and this was back in the day when raids of 40+ ally would camp it. So I am tired of hearing people on this board cry about RNG and luck. You make your own luck in this game. It was no luck that my 1st 2 weeks doing this that I got it both times.

    1) Pick a side/path and keep to it. Practice your route before the contest, as all the pools are in the same place, just replaced by Tastyfish.

    2) Get about 10-15 friends to come with you. Offer to pay them each 100g or so for their 40 min of time. Trust me, this is how I won my 1st two weeks doing this achievement.

    3) Send 2 groups of 3-4 roaming every coast, killing every ally they find. This is your gank group. It will immediately weed out some of your competition.

    4) Keep 2 with you as bodyguards. Never stop to help them kill someone, always fish. Have a pally be 1 of your bodyguards, for mount increase speed aura.

    5) Send 1 group of 2 people as your "spotters". They run up and down and spot pools for you. It is best if they are male tauren. If any ally come by, kill them. If any horde come by, get your 2 tauren friends in the water, jumping up and down, making it near impossible to click on the catch for the competitor.

    6) Carry Elixir of Water Walking with you so you can easily cross any water obstructions and easily maneuver to get any pool. Or have a DK be one of your bodyguards.

    7) Lastly, don't bother with setting your stone to BB. Have a summon team consisting of a Warlock and 2 friends be ready right @ the turn in. Not only do summons have no cast time, but it will put you closer to the turn in. This contest is ALL about using every last second. When you are at around 35 tastyfish, have them summon you, so that the absolute second you get all 40, you can click accept on your summon and turn it in.

Thats about it. You follow those 7 rules exactly and I promise you, you will win whenever you want to win. You may think that some of my tactics are semi-dick moves. But hey, I have been known to go to STV and win the contest weeks in a row for no better reason than to stop people from getting their achievement. :-D

  10. Kiingy <Salty>, 2 years ago:

I helped a friend with this the other day, I have both Horde and Alliance. He asked 2 friends from alliance to come and I came on horde with a friend as well.
So in all, 5 people (including the person trying to win)

    He won.

You don't need massive raid groups for it.
When I won this all I had 1 was person with me and yes I was on a high populated server.

  11. rekra <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Nearly won on my first try, i was running out of the bar to turn in my fish when the winner was announced, so i lost by about 5-10 seconds :'(

    • Character: Oreus (US-Uldaman-H).
  12. Melvoid <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Finally won the STV today after what seems like months but was probably about 6 weeks of hitting Booty Bay every sunday.
only tips i can give are much the same as anyone elses, but for one, WaterWalking Potions lots of em make sure you walk on water all the time and have a fast mount or some other means of speedy travel.
Dont bother fishing in pools with other people unless its very close to your "patch" which in my case was just south of horde camp several people came riding up from BB all trying to get to the next pool b4 the other guy about 4 of them and then it happened as if by magic i was alone free to run between the batch of pools in close proximity to each other that was my patch.
I dont mind telling you my hands were shaking as i hit 37 tastie fish (this is the point a winner is usually declared on this realm).
one more pool with no interruptions HS back to the inn, leg it to the contest master hand in quest just at the same time a dwarf on a horse came thundering up, better luck next week mate this was my turn.
Picked the Arcanite Rod (well you would wouldnt you) and thats it.
Even tho i fish the full two hours every week i have yet to see the blue racer and i soooo want the boots, (the boots of the bay would be nicer but thats a whole other contest).
I cannot complain tho i have the weatherbeaten hat, Gauntlets of The Sea with + 5 fishing enchant on and a + 5 line enchant on both my poles also in the last week i finally fished up the Turtle mount while doing the Ghostfish daily.
So just keep on doing it you will get it one day and remember if its no fun it will take even longer.

This is an exciting story with a tragic ending:

I spent the last week leveling my fishing, and working on achievements. I decided I was ready to try one of these fishing competitions. Since I was busy Saturday, I popped my cherry in STV. I stuck mostly to the SW side, near the bloodsail pirates. A gnome was fishing near me, and we both were going north. So, I decided to turn around and head back toward my original position so that we would not compete for nodes.

I used my waterwalking potions and blinked to nodes that were nearby. I caught my 40 fish, and still had not seen a winner announced. I quickly hearthed to the BB inn and was running to turn in. I quickly noticed another player running inches behind me. I decided that this would be a good time to blink. So, as I turned the corner and saw Riggle, I did it. I ended up blinking to the very edge of the docks, then proceeded to run off of them into the water... I almost cried. Five seconds later the other guy was announced as the winner.

I whispered him right after and congratulated him, explaining that I got so excited about winning that I blinked too far. He said I had made him so nervous that he had selected the trinket for his prize rather than the fishing pole that he wanted. I guess we both kind of lost. I will be here next week, and I hope the strategy that performed so well for me today will pay off even better then.

After having won the tournament on my first character long before the achievement system was in place, before fish finding too, I was sure I would be able to repeat it on this toon. After nearly 20 attempts or so I finally won the STV tournament, and during the Tournament caught the Rockhide Strongfish which gave me the Salty title. If you check my armory the two achievements are still up there, about 17 min apart.

I fished the west coast between Gurabashi Arena and Grom Gol. Never strayed far from original location.

One more tip, if you happen to be a Shaman, equip as much Haste gear as possible, I even ate a Imperial Manta Steak before the start, gives an additional 40 haste. This doesn't affect your hearthstone, but your Astral Recall will be a couple of seconds faster (8.1 seconds for Astral Recall vs. 10.0 for Hearthstone), so make sure its cooldown is ready. As there was another competitor about to turn in it seemed, I felt this was a big advantage for Shaman, quite possibly meaning the difference between winning and second place for me.

I just won the STV Fishing Extravaganza, after following many of the tips from WoWhead and here. It was my third time participating in the STV one, and I had tried my hand at the Kal'uak one with no luck yesterday.

I set my Hearthstone to BB, had 4 Water Walking potions, and had actually went out to Jaguaro island, confusing it and Yojamba Island. I started at Yojamba, went slightly down the beach with the trolls and crocs, however I worked my way back up toward Yojamba when a Warlock started fishing in my own pool. I dual-boxed at the beginning with my level 60 DK I had (No Path of Frost, and no fishing tracker on him) but ditched him on Yojamba while I waited for the other pools to respawn over there. Having him up seemed to scare away some players, including a Shaman and a Priest.

I hit ~36 fish when people started talking in General asking about how many fish people had. Ignoring them, this still got me nervous as someone had 34 fish. I got fourty fish, spazz-whispered a friend of mine I was letting know of my score the whole time (Despite him not wanting to help and making me dual-box,) hearthed to BB and turned it in for the win. I took the fish trinket, because I like the "fun" stuff more. A Troll Warrior came in about 30 seconds after.

Also, I'm a druid if that makes any difference to you. I only used Dash once, and that was to get to a close pool faster. Good luck! :)

So I did ALOT of research on the STV Extravanganza before I attempted it. I ended up winning my first try without having fish finder. Here is what you can do to increase your chances of winning. The two main things to do is to practice practice practice casting make sure you know when you are actually in pools, make sure to put fishing skill as a hotkey(Mine is mouse scroll up). The second thing is get 2-4 friends to help you (explained below).

1.) Prepare by getting 10x water walking and 5x Swiftness Potion (The 10 water walking in case a player from the opposite faction hits you)

    2.) Set Hearth to BB.

3.) Go to spot at least 45 minutes prior to start of tournament. The spot I used was eastern coast of STV.

4.) Bring 2-4 friends along with you and have everyone spread out. Have each person park themselves in front of a pool. Going early is key here because it means that when other anglers arrive they are more likely to leave because they will see people camped infront of pools.

5.) When the tourney begins have your friends pretend to fish in the pool that they are in front of. When the bobber goes down, instead of clicking the bobber have them recast. This gives the illusion that they are really fishing, but in reality your friends aren't actually catching fish they are simply reserving the pools for you. Once you get to a pool that your friend is at, you start catching fish while your friend leaves thr pool and goes to scout the next pool and pretend to fish. Their primary goal is to make it look like they are fishing so someone else doesn't grab the pools, because the fact is most anglers wont fish in a pool that someone else already is fishing in. Their secondary goal is to protect you. Not to start problems with the opposite faction but to protect the real fisherman if a member of the opposite faction attacks.

6.) Move from pool to pool until you get 40. ( As soon as I catch one tastyfish I put it on an empty actionbar so I can keep track of how many I have as I am fishing.). Using swiftness potion and water walking as needed.

7.) Hearth and then use a swiftness potion to turn in. Make sure you know which reward you are choosing.

    Hope this helps.

I did this last sunday for the first time. I didn't know anything about tactic etc.. I even came 30secs too late (wasnt planning on doing it). I started at the pirateplace near booty bay next to some horde. He went south and I worked my way north. Fished really effectively without ever encountering anything but 1 alliance hunter, who i popped some cds and killed within ~5-6 seconds. I have my hearth at BB as default, im a mage (have it there to take the transporter when i wanna pvp in Ironforge). So after i catched my 40 i just HSed to BB and won the competition. Also won a pair of boots from catching some green fish. /who'ed STV. 19 lvl80 hordes with several lowerlevels and probably at least ~15 alliances. And yeah, this is the first time i ever do the STV competition :P

Two frustrating sundays in a row for me.

Sunday 10 days ago, I finally managed to hit 40 fish before the winner was called, quickly cast riptide (Resto shaman with 2pc T10) and Recalled to BB. Ran out the door, targetted the NPC and got ready to click him - when the bloody gnome mage in front of me won.

Sunday 3 days ago, I ended up on 38 fish when the winner was called. The frustrating part of that was having something like 4 others turn up and start fishing out of the pools as me.

Not to mention my RNG is horrible, I usually always end up with something like at least 3:1 tastyfish / trash ratio.

  19. Gaevon <Salty>, 1 year ago:

Sometimes being on a newer server can be helpful! This was my second attempt, and I got it in mere seconds before two other characters appeared! Just worked my way from pool to pool, starting at the southern tip of Stranglethorn.

Then, on my way to catch a ship from SW, I ran into Lil Timmy! I farm his little white kittens, so this was a nice bonus! Later in Dalaran, I finished my 'Silver Coins' achievement. Thought I was on a streak, so I tried to farm the captured firefly - but no go there! :)

All in all, a satisfying day!

  20. Xellros <Salty>, 1 year ago:

It's easier on some servers than others from what I could tell. It was a real pain on my server. But, Holidays are by far the best time to do it. A lot of people will skip out, that's pretty much all ya gotta do, just hit it every weekend, be as fast as you can. Avoid fights, and get lucky. Unlike the Kalu'ak one, this one ya don't have to be super lucky, just a little lucky.

Farm the Arcanite Fishing pole while ya can, I have a hunch this might get far more popular in Cataclysm.
