[Stranglethorn Extravaganza] STV Rare fish drop rate?

1. By Leibolmai <Angler> 2 months ago

Hey all,

I'm on my 12th tournament, and still haven't got the boots. Now I play on Dark Iron, meaning pvp is a hassle.

What I've started to notice is that I get the hat every tournament. I've got the eternium line once.

The hat I normally get around my 125-150th successful catch. The one time I got the line, it was around 225 (I also got the hat around 140 that tourny)

Now its been really hard to get over 200 catches in 2 hours on the pvp server cause of the mass slaughter.

I'm wondering if the 1/200, 1/100 successful catch ratio is right, but you always get the hat first, then the line, then the boots? So you would need to get over 300 catches for the boots.

The one thing that through the # catches for a loop was my first tourny, I caught the fish for the hat on my very first cast. Boy I thought it was going to be so easy after that lol!

Cheers,

I've also gotten the hat twice, the line once, and haven't gotten the boots yet (or the rockhide strongfish) on Noor. Gummo has all the STV items, but I don't remember what order or if any were duplicates.

There is no "hat-line-boots" order in place. I got the Boots early in my second contest, and have yet to catch another rare.

Cool, so there's hope for me yet on the boots :-) Now if I could just transfer to a non-pvp server every Sunday I'd be all set.

Cheers,

I have also only got the boots a this point, and still have not been lucky enough to win the competition.

6. By Oberweiss <Moderator> 2 months ago

I received all of the rare items from the fishing contest on Oberweiss, and from what I remember, it went in this order:

1) rockhide strongfish
2) fishing hat
3) eternium line
4) fishing hat
5) fishing hat (>.<)
6) eternium line
7) fishing boots

I seemed to average 1 rare every 2 or 2.5 contests, although there were streaks of good luck and bad luck. This was before they made fishing faster, so I was averaging ~115 tastyfish per contest (plus probably a stack of non-tastyfish).

My best guesstimate would be 1 in 300 chance for any of the 3 rare fish, and lower for the rockhide strongfish.

Now that I'm gathering these items on a second character, I'm really glad they made fishing faster. More casts means more chances to get rare fish. :)

I opted for "less than 1 in 200 catches" on the fish finder entries for the 3 rare reward fish, which may be a little too generous. I'd still put the odds a little better than Oberweiss (closer to 1 in 100 of catching any of the rare fish). But then I've never seen a Rockhide Strongfish.

I too can confirm there is no magic order - it appears to be random: At one stage I had a stack of High Test Eternium Fishing Lines in the bank and was still missing one of the rare items completely.

I agree with El. As often as I used to do the fishing contest, the data I have is a relatively small sample. It's difficult to pin it down exactly what the rate is, but something in the range of 1 in every 200-275 for any of the 3 rare fish is a decent guess.

All good to know. Seems like I'll need to change my fishing karma rather then my fishing strategy to get the boots. Must be cursed by some alliance finger-waggler to only get only hats hehe.

Cheers,

I fished in every tournament for about 2 months straight and have only caught the Fishing line fish. I averaged about 100 catches a tourney, and have even won twice.

I have fished the pools in the contest maybe 7-8 times , sometimes in the contest some times out of contest and I have gotten 1 hat 2 Eternium lines 0 Boots .
Im not sure about the rockhide fish since it is a grey fish and I didnt know it was a rare so i MIGHT have thrown it away as a "junk" fish.

I've been fishing in the tournament on most Sundays for about a year trying to get the hat and boots for my twink hunter. I've caught the fishing line a total of 7 times, the boots 4 times, and finally at last....the hat. Just bad luck or is the fishing line much more common than the boots and hat?

Hello fellow anglers!

So today marks my 10th STV tourney on Destromath US PvP, and I've got a question about my catch rates since patch 2.4.

Here's what I've caught in the last three contests, since until then I had yet to catch any rare fish:

1. ~125 tastyfish -- 1 Brownell's Blue Striped Racer

2. ~110 tastyfish -- 3 Keefer's Angelfish!! (Yes, 3 in a single tourney! ><)

3. ~140 tastyfish -- 1 Keefer's Angelfish (Yet again, *shrug*)

Keep in mind that out of the 10 competitions I've attended, I've only caught rare fish on the last three (although I did win my Arcanite Fishing Pole on week four).

Now for my question: Does it really matter whether you're on the east or west coast of STV if you're fishing for a specific rare?

My first thought is that rares have an equal chance to spawn from all pools, no matter the location. However, I just would like some confirmation, or any comments would be helpful. I only ask since I tend to fish exclusively on the west coast, between Grom'Gol and Yojamba Ise, and have caught both rares on the west side, while the Dezian Queenfish eludes me. Then someone mentioned that he's caught the Queenfish on the east coast, and just as I happen to get there, another person caught a Queenfish right next to me, also on the east coast.

Sorry for the lengthly post, but thanks in advance for any input!!

Best,

Athok

I'll chime in and say that over the last 2 weeks I've had 3 rares out of 150 catches. But then 3 proves nothing.

Gut feeling is that all pools of the same type have identical catch chances.

However. If you fish pools regularly in Stranglethorn Vale (or read this site closely), you'll know that fishing regular pools north of Grom'Gol gives slightly different catches to fishing south of Grom'Gol - specifically differences in type of trunk, and the appearance of Stonescale Eel schools to the south.

I doubt any of those variations apply to Tastyfish pools. I don't tend to venture north of Grom'Gol because the area fills up with twinks and their over-paranoid escorts. Does anyone know if Stonescale Eel can be caught from Tastyfish pools north of Grom'Gol? That would be the obvious sign that there are distinct differences. And if it could be shown that 5% less Eels means 5% more Tastyfish, then things get really interesting... Pure speculation at this stage.

“Im not sure about the rockhide fish since it is a grey fish and I didnt know it was a rare so i MIGHT have thrown it away as a "junk" fish.”

Both the Steelscale Crushfish (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=6360;source=live) and the Rockhide Strongfish (http://wow.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?witem=19808;source=live) are green items. In all the years I’ve been fishing in this game I’ve yet to catch either one. And I’ve only very very rarely seen them in the auction house. I have two steelscale crushfish in the bank, but I’ve yet to see the rockhide strongfish more than once in the AH and I wasn’t willing to pay as much for it as they wanted. But there are few things more fun in this game than beating mobs to death by dual wielding fish. *smiles*

I’ve gotten all the special fish items from the fishing tournament as well, over various characters. Though I have gotten the hat most often and the fishing line the least. But I am jealous of those of you who have won the tournament. I’ve yet to accomplish that. Is there some secret to it? I always make Bootybay my bind point, but I’ve yet to need to use it. I’m always ten or so fish away when the winner is announced.

And a bit off topic, is there a way to quote others on this forum? I’ve tried

and that doesn’t seem to work.

Thanks.

I believe there are other posts on the forum on strategies for winning the Extravaganza but here are a few pointers:

Find a starting point with few or no other players. I had success using the shore near the Gurubashi Arena both times I won, there are 5-6 pool spawns within a short distance of each other. Of course, I was fortunate to get 5 pools all to myself at the beginning of the contest so I was lucky.

Move fast between tastyfish pools using an epic mount if possible, or some other means of speed.

Always try to go the opposite direction other players are going when looking for new pools. Pools respawn all the time.

Never share a pool unless you are almost done the contest.

As noted above, be prepared for luck to play a role. If other players are constantly fishing from your pools, or you get alot of oily blackmouth etc., you probably won't win that afternoon.

Yes, you can. To make a quote look like the one I just made, include the tags < blockquote > < /blockquote > (without the spaces) around the appropriate text. More information on these and other tags can be found here.

Thanks for the contest tips. I did read that section of the board as well. I’ve always made use of a few of the tips, such as using my mount and heading in the opposite direction of the crowds, but I’ve made some additional notes and I may shelve my frustration and try it again a few more times and see what happens.

Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

I've fished 5 or 6 tourneys on Thorium Brotherhood with Gurko and Garona with Mardigillian. I've never been terribly close to winning, but on Garona I've had something you might call luck with the rares. Hat and line in my first Garona try (3rd or 4th try over all), and 3 count 'em 3 hats in my second try. My biggest problem is having to stay up til 2am for the tourney to start (3am when the US isn't on savings time).

i did 3 contest now... the first time, just when i get the last fish, a horde guy won :(
second time... too much people in the area i like, so i changed side of stv, fished a lot of blackmouth... and the last time someone won when i cought the 38 fish
