[Contests] The Best Way to Win: A Team

I had been trying to win the fishing contest for weeks and I always lost due to rotten luck, ganking alliance, or greifing horde. I thought all of these tactics were so lame and thought the STV Extravaganza should not be required for Salty because it required you to play dirty. Alas, because it required tricks to win and i wanted salty badly I did what I had to do to win the contest. I assembled a team.

I got a bunch of my guildees who are also real life friends all on at 1PM on Sunday to get ready. We had 6 people seperated into 3 teams. This was the second week after Wrath so only a few were level 80. The three teams consisted of the following:

Team 1: Me(Undead Rogue) and Undead Mage: I would of course fish the tastyfish nodes while the mage would run up and down the coast looking for the next node to hit after I was done with the one I was on. He also helped me kill any invading allies or sheep/cc if they were to strong to kill so we could escape.

Team 2: Troll Death Knight and Blood Elf Priest: These 2 went down south and were the PVP team. They killed every alliance they could find, with the priest fearing large groups of them and the Death Knight spawning ghouls on top of them. They succeeded in killing a ton of alliance.

Team 3: Tauren Shaman and Tauren Druid: This was the Horde griefing team. With the shaman's waterwalking and both of their gigantic kodos they stood on any horde player's bobber they could find, making many players hearth and give up the competition and get spammed with threats.

Although it was lame to resort to such tactics, I won handily with the person in second only having caught fish in the 20s. If you want to win, you need to take what you can and give nothing back. It sucks, but it's what must be done if you want to be SALTY!

I think you're Horde griefing team coulda been much much larger, since the PVP team is making it very easy for all the other horde players too.

This is a great idea though Im going to see if I have enough friends to try something like this.

This--this is why the contest shouldn't be part of the fishing meta achievement. It doesn't really have anything to do with fishing.

Why? You don't want it to be part of Salty? If you're saying that ganking and griefing are unseemly, so go to a PvE server. There are lots of them, and most people there who win the pole do it "clean." I won STVFE on a PvE server, and I did it "clean."

This is part of a larger issue: On PvP servers these tactics are part of the game, in damn near every endeavor, not just STVFE. It's just more obvious during the contest. You don't think somewhere on at least one of the PvP servers some guy told his guild the day WotLK came out: "If you see someone fishing, please kill him: I want the Realm First 450 Feat of Strength"? Of course they did. And as far as I'm concerned that's fine: It's the world they signed up for.

If you don't like it, that's no problem at all: PvE servers exist precisely for that reason. I know because I'm on one. When I feel like PvP'ing I head to Wintergrasp or a BG.

Now, if we're going to talk about Salty then it has to be part of the Achievement. It's the seminal accomplishment of any serious fisherman to obtain The Best Fishing Pole In The Game.

Oh, and by the way: Were you also hoping to remove Old Crafty and Old Ironjaw from the criteria as well? They tend to involve a modicum of PvP as well.

As far as I'm concerned the Achievement is precisely where it ought to be: Hard as hell.

Of course it's hard. It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great.

To be honest you have a point. Although it really has nothing to do with the fishing, persistence and dedication and requires mainly brute force and dirty tricks, the STVFE is like the quintessential fishing achievement and was the only fishing achievement till like Mr. Pinchy. I think it really took away from the profession especially like since the 3 weeks in a row that i lost before I finally did it the people that won had just leveled up their fishing to high enough for the contest the day earlier in order to get achievement points. Achievement whores ruined fishing, so I felt like I had to unleash the Kremling Krew on them in order to get the Salty title since I had been fishing long before the achievement patch was released. So, as I have shown even a small team of 6 can DEMOLISH Stranglethorn so if you can, I would assemble one before next contest and you will definitely win.
