[Fishing] The few...the proud...the Salty...

  1. Krystella <Salty>, 5 months ago:

So just a few moments ago, I turned in the last daily quest to become Salty.

It's been an ambition for so long, and finally came to fruition. I gave up on it a few months ago with the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza. Every time I went, the place was swarming with No Mercy Mafia, an Alliance PVP guild who killed me six times the last time I participated in it. I decided that if I wanted Salty, I'd have to go Ally just to survive and gave up for a few months, fishing in the fountain for coins on the side, but not really striving for the title.

Then came the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby, where I saw my opportunity to get the hardest portion of Salty out of the way. There was no way that one guild could camp all of the pools in Northrend right? So I logged on two hours before the tournament, studied El's summary and video, and prepared myself. Ten minutes after the contest started, I turned in my Shark and became a Master Angler of Azeroth the first week the Derby was released. After this, I continued to work on the coins off and on, finally getting my Titanium Seal about two weeks ago.

With this, the most RNG laden task out of the way, (so I thought) I set out to tackle the others. Getting all the pools was no problem, and fishing up the bosses was easy enough to sneak to and do. No, as bad as the coins were, I had run into the real c-blocker of this acheivement.

    Pinchy.

I fished. And fished. And fished. And when I was done with that, I fished some more. After twenty four solid hours of fishing over a four-day period, I finally caught Pinchy. Unfortunately, I didn't get the pet on the first wish, so afraid I was going to lose the wishes without the pet, I spent the two day cool-down fishing the pools some more. Fortunately, I got the Crawdad on the second wish, and I was done with fishing for Pinchy. The only thing that stood between me and Salty was Crocolisks in the City, and after a few days of checking the questgiver, I finally completed that and got Chuck for my troubles on the turn-in.

I am one of the 104 this year. Now to celebrate?

I need my turtle. Back to fishing.

  2. Al <Salty>, 5 months ago:

    Gratz, Krystella!

    Still no turtle here. LOL!

  3. Minivini <Salty>, 5 months ago:

Gratz, I got my Salty title a few days ago with a Dark Herring from a Frozen Wastes pool.

Two weeks ago I was 3 seconds late to hand in my shark for Kala'uk, but the day after I won the STV competition so it didn't feel so bad.

Having Salty and wielding the Arcanite Fishing Pole feels really great.

FYI I started on this character on 10th Dec 2009 and hit 80 an 4th Jan 2010, been working on Salty since about mid Jan - so only about two months!

    Not too shabby.

  4. waverly <Salty>, 5 months ago:

Congrats! I got my Salty title last weekend, and the same happened to me as you, Minivini. I missed the Kalu'ak Derby by seconds on Saturday -- I caught the shark 6 minutes in and was waiting for the NPC to load in Dalaran when the winner was announced. It was the closest I'd come in either competition, and I felt so defeated. Then the next day I won STV, which I really thought would never happen! It was such a thrill.

Now I can focus on the turtle mount too... Good luck!

Just won the Kalu'ak Fishing Derby and need only "Shrimpin' aint easy" to get my Salty. It will be tomorrow if everything goes as planned. I made it finally and with a Dark Herring as the one for "The one that didnt get away".

The Derby was tense with Horde participating and ready in Howling Fjord. I had planned to fish the lake north of Skorn but decided to move to Cauldros Isle at the last moment. 600 skilled I fished 4 pools and HSed back to Dalaran in 11 minutes from start. Quick & dirty....heheh!

I got my boots on and now...off for the Turtle.....no respectable Salty can go round without it ehheh!!
Good luck to all those working for the best title in game...

Just got a 15 pound Mudfish tonight to finish up my quest towards... my 2nd Salty title!

Feels good to have accomplished it on two characters. My main (hunter) got the title soon after WotLK came out, having had all of the Vanilla/TBC-related achievements completed by the time 3.0 hit. A few months ago I decided it might be fun to try through the whole thing again on my paladin, and here we are!

Whew! Getting that last rare fish was a pain.

  7. Rosehip <Salty>, 4 months ago:

Congrats. For the turtle, fish inland in Borean Tundra.

Where is this statistic displayed? Is there somewhere (online or in-game) that I can go to see how many have achieved 'Salty' on my realm?

  9. Davbad <Angler>, 4 months ago:

I am salty with my dk with 1044 catches! 384 in fishing. Got the turtle also! With m'y Hunter I needed 12k fishes to have both and the rat. Be patient!

  10. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 4 months ago:

Trokair: 104 = 52 weeks * 2 contests. In practice plenty of Salty people will win both contests, or have several Booty Bay wins. So the actual number of Salty titles on each realm will be under 100 per year. The Armory still doesn't allow any kind of search by achievement (except for world firsts).

  11. Runne <Salty>, 4 months ago:

I just got my Salty today! Won the Dal quest, catching my shark in just under 8 min. Pretty lucky too considering I was flying around mine hunting when it spammed. I flew to the Heart of the Basin after flying the river in I just decided to open water fish there. Pulled it up in about 5 casts. Took the Ring as my reward since I have the STV tourny fishing boots. Now for the Turtle and Crafty to have them all done!

For those that wonder about gear or skill...I have max skill and was only using the Bone Pole with the +5 line upgrade, no lures or other items (I do have hat, gloves and as mentioned boots).

  12. Reynn <Salty>, 4 months ago:

Got Salty on my 2nd toon today. :)

Had the north coast of STV to myself and won less than 20 seconds before I saw the next person run up to turn in.

While skill certainly isn't a huge part of the win, strategy is!

  13. Trokair <Salty>, 4 months ago:

I got my Salty over the weekend. Woohoo!

So glad to have this title... now I only have three fishing achievements that have not been done (the turtle, the rat and completing all 5 of the Northrend fishing dailies).

El, to speak to your 104 number.... I won the contest over 2 years ago and took a break from WoW.... so if there is actually 104 Salty titles on my server this year (highly unlikely), I would be #105. In fact, who can tell the number of people that win their Salty title using a contest win from years gone by? You really can't, so that further skews the #104 per year statistic.

Now to level this LV 70 up to 80 so I can fish everywhere in Northrend a bit easier...

*edit: Forgot to thank El for this wonderful site. Obviously this is the best place to learn about WoW fishing on the internet. THANK YOU, EL!!

  14. Leodan <Salty>, 4 months ago:

I''m just waiting for Mr Pinchy cooldown, it's the last bit for my Salty title.

Just this Sunday I won the STV Contest, I mobilized 7 people from my guild who supported me like crazy, they killed Horde in a wide radius around me, whispered with competing anglers to steal their time, they fished in pools of other anglers to support me. Well, it worked out and I got my Arcanite pole. They also scouted pools for me, which was very important.

I got the sewer rat just after 12 casts, and my dark herring after 2044 casts (exclusively in pools) in winter something lake in Howling Fjord just today. Then, only Mr Pinchy's not there yet. I went to fish just 2 hours ago and had no competition, and the last pool I wanted to fish contained Mr Pinchy. Unfortunately, no Crawdad (but the One ring). However, of course I just wanted to empty the pool I just fished Pinchy out, and guess what, I got ANOTHER Pinchy from the same pool. Don't believe my luck? I got a fresh screenshot from 10 minutes ago! :D

    http://img.pulseone.at/view/cfc97ba16d

You can also look up my armory to see that I got the dark herring today (Leodan, EU-Blackmoore).

I won't go to sleep now, as I hope my luck goes on with the turtle.

    Still can't believe it!

PS: I also got Rivendare's mount on my 4th strat run on this char and my ZG tiger on the 3rd (you can verify this by my statistics on the armory page). I also had the timelost proto-drake spawn right under me as I went to do Hodir daylies (you can see me riding him on the screenshot). Oh, and I saw the Battered Hilt drop twice on one day (didn't win though), but I told my guildies about it and one of them was trying to get one for ages. I told him to make a group and we'll go farm it, in Pit of Saron. As unbelievable as it gets, on the last trash group, I (incidentally and just out of fun!) said "Boy, this corpse looks like it contains the hilt, I'm telling you!" and the whole Teamspeak was like "W T F OLOLOLOL" when it was in there. Of course we all let the guy who wanted it have it (if you dont believe this, come on my server and ask my guildies, the story is legendary here).

I'm just a lucky bitch it seems! Only the turtle still doesn't show up after about ~6000 casts total in Northrend pools. Still I'm lucky to have gotten my weather-beaten journal and hat on two consecutive days of Dalaran fishin dailies, and two crocs out of four times the crocolisk daily.

My guildies are suspecting me of being a GM lol. Didn't really want to "brag" but I just can't believe the amount of luck I have had so far.

  15. DokBrown <Salty>, 4 months ago:

I love people that are like "if you don't believe me, check this and this and this!"

We believe you. There's no reason not to!

  16. Leodan <Salty>, 4 months ago:

It's more like I can't believe it myself. There's some karma it seems (Turtle not showing up) though.

I suspect that both Pinchy won't grant me the Crawdad solely because it's the last thing I need for salty.

However, people can use my post above as a guide for winning STV, it's so much less stressful and the odds are far better for you if you just get some guildies to help you.

Scouting pools and holding off / clearing the area of Horde are the most important ones. Although it's kinda not nice to also "harass" people from your own faction, it also helps. For example, a guildie talked to a guy who fished near us, asked him questions and stuff and the guy replied - which is helpful for you, as every second counts.

My brother rode along the coast 15 minutes before the start and fished pools where people positioned themselves to wait (lots o' nice whispers, you bet, "f*** off" was one of the nicer ones) to throw them off and sabotage their prep.

Even with all this help I managed to just turn in ~90 secs before a crowd of other people appeared to turn in (judging from their behavior, they still thought they can win) and another horde player who did not have sprint (I'm a rogue and using the +30% speed glyph) was seconds behind, but congratulated me after turn-in nevertheless.

I also harbor personal hatred for the Kaluak Derby, as there's not a single bit of skill involved (besides knowing a good fishing location) yet Blizzard says otherwise.

  17. Leodan <Salty>, 4 months ago:

Mr Pinchy seriously loves suspense. The last charge (of the first Pinchy) gave it to me. Now it's just Crafty (which I fished vor ~300 times by now in OG) and the turtle (which is around 6500 tries).

    At least, finally I'm Salty.
