I know this is not what you want to hear, it certainly isn't what I wanted to hear when I was still trying to win. But a lot of it is luck.
Having said that... yes you do have to have luck on your side in order to win this thing, but having luck on your side does no good unless you've got some of the finesses of the competition down.
The hardest thing for me was fishing in "other people's" nodes. Outside of this competition, I would never dream of mining someone's mine, or fishing a pool where someone's already fishing. If someone's fighting a monster and it appears to me that there is even a remote possibility that they are trying to gather a resource, I will stand there and wait until they are done with the mob, give them a hand if necessary, and wait to see if they are gathering before I go for it myself. But with this competition, you cannot, under any circumstances, think that way. This is a competition. Your goal is to beat those people. It really hurt my brain to do that at first, but let's face it. This is not an etiquette contest. Miss Manners is not the judge. There is no "Polite" title.
Once I got over that, I had to learn to listen to my instinct on whether or not I'd stop for a pool that already had someone fishing. Just because you can doesn't always mean it's a good idea. I don't share pools very often, I just needed to let myself know it's okay sometimes. Sometimes you have to let your inner voice tell you whether or not it's worth breaking your stride/unmounting to join someone at a pool. Sometimes you have to know when to move on if someone joins you at your pool. I don't know how else to explain it, but it really comes down to the subtle nuances. Using enhancements for speed, water walking, binding to Booty Bay--things like that are just assumed minimum requirements.
Edit: Just had another thought... I wonder if there would be any benefit to having a friend there with you on a Traveler's Mammoth? Especially a paladin, with the crusader aura. You'd save mounting time by having them always mounted and you just hop on & off, which is nearly instant. Not sure, seems like any time saved would be made up by having to communicate with each other where to go, might involve too much coordination but just a thought.
