I also had 38 today when the winner was announced, but I was trying out the area near the bloodsails(east coast, towards Jaguero Isle),so tbh I didn't expect to be that close.
Island hopping as a pally isn't the most efficient way to get around, but with plenty of water walking pots,it seems worth giving the area another attempt,as on my server it's very quiet there.
I'm working on the idea that even with less pools, having them to myself (and much less chance of ganking on my horde-heavy server) will even the odds.
Fingers crossed for next week, when hopefully I can drag a DK from my guild along for the path of frost too.

*sigh* Even though I've already won it, today was a sad day.
I logged in with my bank-alt and checked the auctions and when I switched to my main I saw the fishingbuddy notice "Tournament in 0:04". "Damn" was my thougt while I rushed to the airship, luckily I stood in Orgrimmar. Waiting.. waiting ... "0:01", waiting ... when I finally arrived it already started but oh well, rare fish were my primal goal. So I fished, and a lot of pools were shared and then it happened. I caught my 40th tasty and yet there was no winner. D'oh, being late already at the start I couldn't set my stone into the booty bay so I rode the coast down.. 15 seconds, no winner, 20 seconds, no winner and then at the 27th second whe I were in the tunnel, the announcement came. :(
/me votes for a Dalarangate in BB so I could lay my HS always there.
Edit: Oh and of course I didn't catch any rares >_<

There are a couple of things I haven't noticed have appeared as suggestions on this thread yet:
First, never ever fish from half-pools. It's a black hole that you'll throw time into and never get anything out of. Especially not if you've got 38 or 39 fish. Then all you've got is another horrible story to tell on this board.
There are also a couple of tricks you can use. They're legal, though as el has pointed out, perhaps not precisely "ethical."
1. Get two or three friends to pretend to fish the pool you're currently using. Make sure they understand they mustn't right-click their bobbers or they'll deplete a tastyfish from your pool.
2. Get three or four friends to pretend to fish a pool you're NOT currently using, but will be moving on to next. They, too, mustn't actually right-click their bobbers.
Both these stunts will cause other fishermen to avoid the pools you're using. After all, everyone is following the same (reasonable) strategy you are, avoiding pools that already have multiple fishermen in them.
3. Get one or two friends to scout out other pools for you. They can then be used for #2.
4. Get one or two or thirty friends to go to every other pool and jump up and down on people's bobbers. It'll make them d!cks, and they'll get a slew of nasty tells from half the people they do it to. (The other half will be opposite faction Alliance. kek.) But it's not illegal, and not an exploit. If you're going to pull this stunt, I reccommend using Tauren.
5. Get one or two or thirty friends to go to the other side of the zone and just fish up the pools that you are never ever going to use. That way they deplete the pools faster, and the competition gets fewer fish per pool. This'll slow everybody on one side of STV down quite a bit.
You can even do both #2 or 5, and #4 to someone, both at the same time. That's a terrific way to encourage them to move along and leave a pool. It's also guaranteed to piss them off something awful. Expect to get reported to a GM even if what you're doing is legal.
You're on a PvE server, so you cannot mobilize your guild to gank half the competition. But you CAN use them to make ALL the competition miserable.
These are all gray area tricks, so use them with caution. If you ever find a blue post that calls them "exploits" I'd stop immediately. But if you're not afraid of being a d!ck and you have guildies to ask for help, well hell: Knock yourself out.
Fair notice: I have never used any of these tactics before. I won STVFE the old fashioned way. But then: I'm a good fisherman. YMMV.

I'd be confident that the stuff in the list is legal, except for the jumping up and down on the bobbers part. Two things come to mind for that:
1) I would expect that to actually fall under harassment;
2) Even if it's not currently, were it to become common, I'm sure it would upset folks enough to become a customer service problem, and become harassment.
Except perhaps on a PvP realm, in which case you just kill the opposing faction folk anyway.
My personal view is; if you are using scouts, that's just good planning. If you are fishing out other pools (or fake fishing); that's a little more borderline. It's becoming more about degrading others fishing skills, rather than enhancing your own. Interfering with others bobbers seems clearly across the line to me.
If I'm in a competition (or race, or whatever), I'd like to think I won based off of my skills (and perhaps cleverness and planning), but not off of holding other folks back. Just my view.

Before the achievement system I had won the Tournament twice, and then abstained from it so others could win. I was around lvl 40 and skill was around 260-275. Both times I used the eastern shore. I had also caught 2 of the tournament rare fish in addition to three or four of the "one that didn't get away" fish, most notably the rockhide strongfish. Then about a year and half ago I decided to stop playing WoW as it was taking up way too much of my time, and was negatively affecting my health. I was the leader of a 100+ member guild at the time, I sold ALL of my possesions and gave the proceeds to the next guild leader. I was done with WoW, or so I thought. I then deleted my character. After about a year off, I got the bug again and started playing Guild Wars, it was OK for a while, but it still pales in comparison to WoW. I started a new account, as it was too long a time to revive my deleted character, used the same name from my deleted character and started playing again. Rejoined my guild, though I am no longer Guildmaster, and started out at level 1 once again. Now I am lvl 72 and have only the Tournament, The one that didn't get away, and a still need a few more coins from Dalaran fountain to get the Title.
I was shocked at the difference between the pre-achievement Tourneys and the current ones. So many more people, it was crazy. Very few unshared nodes. My first attempt left me with only 27 fish by the time a winner was announced. I tried again last week and got to 36, using the area between bloodsail compound and Grom'gol. Fishing skill at 450, this will be tough road. Going to try to fish the extreme Northeast coast next week, wondering if anyone has had any luck there. Its a PvE server so I dont have to worry bout ganking, plus at my level, aggro is not too much of an issue.
I have a plan of attack for minimizing non-fishing time, which I will galdly share with the forum once I have won.- Character: beachmystic (US-nazgrel).

From reading the advice of those who won pre-3.0.1, I do believe there's a LOT more competition for the Contest now. I've never been able to fish by myself, because all pools were shared; when I tried to just move on whenever a pool was being shared, I ended up simply not getting any fish.
New times... Definitely more competitive, and I don't see how that's gonna ever slow down (there are potentially a lot more people interested in the title than there are weeks in a year.) But it makes winning it all the sweeter. :)

the thing is, preLK, you could win the tourney with strategy....postLK, it really does just take luck to win because there's so much more competition and everyone's using all the tricks at their disposal.
The must luck I've had in WoW can be summed up in the tourney (preLK mind-you...just after BC released I believe):
1st tourney= win
2nd tourney= win
3rd tourney= stopped fishing after 1 rare fish catch
4th tourney= stopped fishing after I cought the other 2 rare fishI'm a crappy roller...never had a random epic world drop...but i'll take my tourney luck thank you. :)
***one other thought is...you might have better luck towards the end of the school year...a lot of the Christmas Gift players won't be on any more...parents who are paying for their kids' subscriptions will be tired of paying (economy factor thrown in)...and the college kids will be theoretically cramming for finals.

*cry* I had my 40 fish, hearthed back to BB and right as I was walking up to the guy someone else won it. Sad thing is I had eleven non-tastyfish catches like the stranglekelp, etc. There were at least 2 times were I felt like I should've moved to a different spot but stayed. So I know I could have won if I played a little smarter.

My server is Blackrock (US)
It is a historically Australian server though so all my friends and I are still on it. This means for me every week I have to stay up/ wake up at FOUR THIRTY AM Monday morning for the comp which starts at 5am my time ;-(
I can't get any friends to wake up at this hour and help...
What's worse is the last 4 weeks the comp has been won in under 17mins

From the years I spent fishing in the full 2 hours as a twink, I was able to notice where the higher concentration of alliance are and where the horde are. To me the absolute most important thing to really win it is to bring help. You don't want to sit there and fish in a crowd of your own faction. Sounds weird but if you can bring enough help.. maybe only 4-5 people. You are able to clear out the other faction and have a whole area just to yourself, and your own faction won't be there stealing your pools.
Of course if you can't bring help, or I guess on a pve server. Then you need to fish where people aren't at. Whatever you do avoid the crowds and of course you need to do most of what is suggested above (setting hearth stone, using water walking... etc) but all of that is common knowledge at this point.

I am really sorry to hear that.
