[Contests] Title: Master Angler

  1. Pipre <Deadly Salty>, 1 year ago:

I came across this post in the Official Suggestions Forum. It's a petition of sorts for Blizz to add the title of 'Master Angler' to the game, so that those who have achieved it through doing the Fishing Tournament will be able to show to everyone else in the game how awesome they are.

There are some pretty good suggestions in there, and I totally love the idea of being 'Master Angler Petre'. Almost to the point where if that were the only change in WLK I'd still buy it!

Wondering what the rest of you think about the idea of officially being 'Master Anglers'.

I like the idea of the title. Lord of the Rings Online makes heavy use of titles and I think it adds a fun element to the game. But I personally don’t like it tied to the fishing tournament. I’ve been participating in that tournament off and on since the day it was added to the game and I’ve yet to win it. Adding a title to the pot would only make it more frustrating. But like I said, that’s just from private, personal hell viewpoint. *smiles*

I posted on that thread. I think it would be a nice addition, but I don't think it's all that likely to happen.

I don't think Blizzard keeps a solid record of who won every week since the contest started. The data is likely to be wiped out every so often. It would be pretty awful if they added the title and then made people win another two times to get the title, even if they already had both prizes.

I have a friend who used to be a GM, so I will ask him if he thinks it's possible.

I've always been addicted to badge/title/achievement collecting in games. SWG, City of heroes, Team Fortress, love doing it. Was a little disappointed that theres only a couple of titles in WoW (which I don't have yet) and love the idea of adding more.

Maybe there is no record of who won but I'd think its a relatively simple process to check if the person has the arcanite pole and the fishing trinket in their bag slots. Unless someone for some reason picked the same one both times.

The nearest thing to badges I suppose is Mr pinchy and the crocs at the moment, would be nice to see titles for things like winning the competition, getting a high fishing skill etc.

From the way I understand it, the fishing tournament quest can only be completed twice (?), and once you have both rewards the quest to end the tournament is no longer available? If that's the case each character who has won will have completed the quest twice, should be easy to find.

I also posted in there that they could simply make a third item available to winners who have maxed (375) fishing which would unlock the title in their character pane. This would get people who have already won in the past back into the tourney!

No, you can win as many times as you want.
The pole is unique but the trinket isn't.

I think winning the contest is one of the hardest single activities in WoW. Forget winning twice; winning once is virtually impossible on a mature realm. As such, if anything deserves a title, this is it. Since the title is announced in-game, but not awarded as a title, the lack of "Master Angler" should be regarded as a bug, not a feature suggestion.

Blizzard store historic data on things like financial transactions to excruciating levels of detail, so I'd be very surprised if they don't record repeatable-quest completion. Even if they don't, both rewards are soulbound and the best in their class. So a simple query of either item in the players' entire inventory will flag 99% of past winners.

Heh, I was just enjoying using my Hook of the Master Angler and saw that the buff you get is called "Master Angler".

This is possible and they have done this b4, If anyone had done the quest b4 they nuked the attunement quests for TK/SSC they said they would add something into the game for those who have completed the quests. Behold just a couple patches ago all those ppl who had finished the quests are now cruising
around with "Champion of the Narru" titles (including myself) but i would love to have this tag, fishing is awesome on WoW. (Im maxed for the stats too (i got the rum) :D)

I posted on the thread just now.

I added a little suggestion to the thread myself by stating that if you win the 1st time or just once, you should get "Master Angler".

If you win a 2nd time or more than once, you should get "Grand Master Angler".

Frankly I've only won once (pole), but it's absolute murder (literally) to win this thing on a PvP server. I've fished the competition for several months after winning to try for rare fish but I have since stopped, having not caught any. I even started showing up at 2:30 to avoid the blood bath.

My blood pressure rising exponentially during the 2 hour competition has made me stop doing the competition for now. ;)

Forget trying to win it a second time -- it's still murder if you show up at 2:30 _after_ they've announced a winner!

I think El is right about mature realms. My server Azgalor is a day 1 server and it seems that people are more "aware" of the event - the turn out certainly indicates this fact. :)

I hope they install titles though. I can't imagine having to win it again just to get a title however. Winning once should count for something. :(

I asked my former-GM friend about the way Blizzard stores an individual's quest completion data. This is what he had to say:

Its only possible (based on the last time I checked) for quest completion to be tracked a single time. For that type of thing to occur, they'd have to technically add a 2nd, unique quest that would basically be a chain to the first one.

So, the way El mentioned of determining whether the character has both rewards in his/her possession would likely be the only way for them to backtrack former double winners. In my opinion, it seems like more work than they would be willing to do to implement the title. I'd love to see the title added, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Thanks mate! Good to see some support for this, as it is something I believe really needs to be done.

  14. Trinda <Angler>, 1 year ago:

Worst case scenario, they implement the title and you don't get it... couldn't one just petition a GM and have them look at the inventory?

They did this for me with an arena win that bugged and chalked up as a draw instead and that was stats and numbers that they had to go and dig through to check.
I'm sure they would do something for tourney winners since it is even easier to check for the tourney items in your inventory.

  15. Pipre <Deadly Salty>, 1 year ago:

How about doing it this way. When you've won the tourney once, and have maxed out your fishing another tourney quest is unlocked allowing you to receive the 'Master Angler' title as a third reward for winning the tourney. This would rekindle the desire to compete in the tourney for those of us who have already won it before.

  16. Itty <Angler>, 1 year ago:

The best way to implement the title would be to have a quest checking for either of the two tournament items in the player's inventory. I like Sharina's suggestion of having two titles: Master Angler (1 win) and Grandmaster Angler (2 wins).

The Master Angler title should not require players to win again if they already have. After all, they won a tournament and were already declared Master Angler by Riggle Bassbat.

Beyond that, requiring players to re-win the tournament now would be a nightmare. The fishing extravaganza was introduced in September 2005, giving time for around 130 tournaments to be held on mature servers. For sake of argument, let's assume that maybe half the characters who win the tournament also won it a second time. (This is probably a generous estimate.) That would give us around 87 unique winners. Assuming nobody else were to win the tournament, it would take over a year and a half for all those winners to re-win and obtain the title they already rightfully earned but never received.

I like this idea. I don't get nearly enough chances to show off my fancy trinket ;)

And yeah, I gotta think they could determine it by your inventory. If they have a way to check the quest's completion, find all of those players, then query to see how many rewards they own (1 or 2). It would be a lengthy query but it would really only need to be done once (in fact, the best way to do it would probably be to secrety add in tracking for this early, like a sub-patch, and run the query before the next "full patch" goes live which would actually contain the new title).

Sometimes, I'm glad Blade's Edge isn't the best server... I might actually win...

  19. Marlburo <Extremely Salty>, 1 year ago:

Just wanted to let you know that you can definatley win the tournament as many times as you want, but you can only have one pole. I always walk around with my 2 trinkets equipped to show I mean business. I am an 8-time fishing tournament champion and have been wanting a title for forever (as long as its not Master Baiter).

  20. GormanGhaste <Low Sodium>, 1 year ago:

Perhaps this is jealousy on my part, but it seems rather selfish to me to win the tournament more than twice...
