[Fishing] Turtle, in how many catches did you (not) get it?

  1. Sevarta <Salty>, 5 months ago:

Finally! After weeks, I was able to pull this guy up! Took about 8k casts. I fished him up in Crystalsong forest. Although the fish aren't worth much in Crystalsong, I found the shape of the river to be convenient for farming. Since its straight you can mindlessly go up and down it several times lol.

I wish everyone good luck and thanks for the helpful posts! (Kept me sane while going for this particular catch!)

It took me 2,265 casts to catch this. I think this was because I paid my dues with the Giant Sewer Rat (7,154 casts). hahaha

I made at least 1800 casts in Grizzly Hills (the other casts were in pools in various Northrend zones), before finally catching him in a pool next to the bridge between Zeb'Halak and Blue Sky Logging Grounds in Grizzly Hills.

Good luck to all that are still waiting for the Sea Turtle!!

I've been fishing for this the past few days, I'm going out of my mind! I signed up just now cause maybe this will help. ;)

Anyway, I'm up to around 3400 casts total, all in schools of fish, still no luck. About 1300 of them are in the Frozen Sea, 800 each around Riplash Strand and Lake Kum'uya, and the rest in Sholazar Basin. No turtle so far, and I'm starting to lose faith slightly. My fishing is now max, I'm actually destroying stacks of fish for inventory space since I can't be bothered with going back to Orgrimmar to auction them.

But the game threw me a bone - I never had the Find Fish ability, so I went over to Terokkar to find it. Completely unaware of Mr. Pinchy, I fished it up on my second cast in to Lake Ere'Noru.

It also gave me Magical Crawdad Box on my first attempt.

    Pic 2

Maybe I won't give up on fishing just yet. I had to go to Nagrand to find the Weather Beaten Journal in the end.

I've read reports of people finding Sea Turtle in open water (ie. not a school of fish), and even a conversation with a GM that I saw (on Wowhead iirc), the GM confirmed that you can indeed fish it up from anywhere in Northrend, not just a school of fish. Has anyone actually caught one outside of a school? It might make things a bit more comfortable.

Took around 5 casts in the pools just by Unu'pe, wasn't really trying to a mount, chatting with a friends and woosh up he came, very lucky indeed.
For others trying: Don't give up!

    6000+ so far....nothing. I stopped keeping track at 6000.

I have determined that Blizzard hired someone to make sure i cant get random luck items. You know the polar bear from Brunn. I have done that daily everyday since 12-5-08. Still nothing.

I noticed a while back that my toons seemed to have vastly different luck. So I started writing things down when the fishing daily was put into the game.

Here is what I found:(Copy and pasted from another post)

I started keeping track.....after a long while, the number indicate what I had been thinking up to when I started keeping track. When starting a daily or what every that involved a luck bag, I always knew which of my toons would get it before the others.

In reference to what drops out of bags in game, i have been informed by blue that it is completely random.

I am gonna call shenanigans on that.

I have a few characters that i do dailies on. My main raiding toon, which is the one i post with has EXTREMELY bad luck on ingame luck bags. I honestly didnt think I would ever come to post this complaint but, wow, its starting to become too much. I have been keeping track as an experiment when the fishing daily was added. I decided to do this based on the trend that I was starting to see between my toons.

This toon: 88% of the bags have had Useless glass pieces of all colors along with the deviate fish and sometimes a glow worm. This is the same toon that has done the Brunn daily everyday since the first week of Dec. 2008 (missed 4 days total spread through the time) and still no white bear mount. 5628 fish from solid blocks of time farming the turtle and no drop. This does not include fish i catch when i see a pool during dailys.

One of my other toons: 31% of the bags have had useless glass of various colors. Most bags have had a good vendor item. Plus many with the other stuff. This toon has everything but the tiff pole. This toon got the Brunn mount on the 6th time doing the daily. This toon got the turtle while doing a fishing daily.

Yet another toon:47% of the bags have had useless glass of various colors. Bear mount on 16th time doing the Brunn daily.

What I'm getting at.....I would really love to see the code or Random Number generator that decides this stuff. If it is so random, it seems the numbers would be closer over the length of time I have done this.

I'm going to give up farming this. Some people just never seem to be able to get it, no matter how many I fish. People either seem to get it within the first few pools, or have to fish several thousand casts just to get it to appear.

I definitely think there's something going on with the droprate in the game, as in, there are more variables than they let on. Maybe it changes depending on those variables. Maybe certain schools have a higher chance, maybe certain times of day, who knows. But after having fished nearly 4000 fish and it taking so long I can barely remember what the regular game is like, I can't stand the thought of having to potentially fish for at least double that with no guarantee of ever getting it.

I've been trying for it in the Frozen Sea. People have got it from there, but from what I can tell, they had to work for it. I've not seen anybody say they got it within 30 minutes fishing in the Frozen Sea.

I wish Blizzard would release the official drop rates. Lots of people appear to have obtained this item with only a small amount of fishing, a significant number of people have cast 10,000 times and never got it. Those numbers just don't add up for me. If the droprate is so low that you can fish 10,000 times and not get it, then there is no way that so many people could be getting it in 5 casts. An isolated number, fair enough, but there's enough people from each side to suggest that there's something else going on here. Of course, this is going off the assumption that everyone is telling the truth, which I'm willing to do.

Personally I think what I'll do is stop to fish occasionally when I see schools of fish while I'm out and about, do the fishing dailies, and if I get it I get it, otherwise I'll have to miss out. I can't waste my life farming for something that may never drop for me.

Got it the other day, without ever specifically trying. For reference, some (occasionally estimated) numbers of deliberate casts for various rare "fish" -

    Old Ironjaw - 212
    Old Crafty - 788
Dark Herring - at least 2500, probably something like 3000-4000
Sewer Rat - less than 100
Mr. Pinchy - probably a few hundred, but I spread it out over a long time

I haven't fished that many pools since they added the turtle, but I went out to fish some Borean Man O' War to level cooking on my alt and got it on about the 15th pool (maybe 50th cast or so). I've been pretty lucky overall, but that Herring was a pain. 74/75 profession achievements completed (only 10 awards from the Chef's Hat for #75).

    Good luck, anglers!

  8. xZACKx <Angler>, 5 months ago:

    it took me 800 casts!
got it last night and i was about to stop fishing then i said one more pool and then i got it!
    good luck everyone!

  9. Hamacus <Salty>, 5 months ago:

Finally got mine last night! Somewhere aroung 3500 cast. Also caught 2 dark herring along the way. LOL... caught the turtle in the exact same pool as where I caught the herring in fact.

Just spent a lazy hour (Roughly) farming Glassfin Minnow Schools for this, got the following :

    Turtles : 0
    Glassfin Minnow : 121
    Crystallized Water : 10
    Reinforced Crates : 6
[Missed the pool] Bonescale Snapper : 9

    Total Pool Catches : 137

I haven't put in nearly enough time to really expect to catch one, but /shrug. Might put in another few hours later this afternoon.

  14. Durth <Salty>, 4 months ago:

Just caught the turtle on my DK this morning. I was doing the Resupply daily for the Tuskars and stopped off to fish around the Iceburgs with all the Deep Sea monster Belly's. One lap around the most eastern burg and boom there it was.
I never actively went for the mount since I knew I would be fishing Northend pools frequently anyway and that way I didnt go crazy not getting it.

  15. rainne <Angler>, 4 months ago:

I got the turtle mount about an hour ago. I was fishing the pools in Lake Kum'uya. I have wanted it since the patch came out, but I have not farmed for it. I can't believe it.

  16. Tiernee <Angler>, 3 months ago:

    Well, I'm almost embarrased to say this, but I caught her with 44 casts. I was honestly expecting to spend YEARS fishing.. I waterwalked up the coast, found some nodes near the walrus people and started fishing. And I'm pretty much a noob at WoW ^-^ Now if only I could have this kinda luck with the extravaganza ;.;

The annoying thing about rare catches like the turtle is that even after making thousands of catches, all you can do is look back and say "Man, I've been really unlucky so far". You're still no closer to catching it than you were when you started.

That said, I've been keeping track of my catches on the journey to obtaining the ultimate tanking weapon, the Dark Herring ;-) With 3.1 introducing the turtle, I switched to raiding Fangtooth Herring schools, instead of simply sticking to regular inland water. The numbers are as follows:

    876 Fangtooth Herring
    051 Water Crystals
    060 Crates
    (001 Sea Turtle)
    ================
    987 Total

I recall the Turtle being caught along with a regular haul, so it is not counted towards the total amount of catches made. I did not bother to keep track of the amount of Suckerfish caught along with the regular catches either.

I just cute this lil Cutey Turtle in a Glacial Salmon school in Howling Fjord. It was about my third cast into the particular pool...so unexpected!

  19. krashx69 <Angler>, 3 months ago:

I've had over 7K fish caught..nothing..someone told me that they had caught it in crystalsong forest up and down the river in 30 mins, on all 3 of his toons..tried it, got in 40 mins..GL all

  20. Eltrut <Angler>, 3 months ago:

I've been fishing for the turtle for a couple of days now. Started fishing in The Frozen Sea on a level 10 character, with a fishing skill of 0. I went from 0-265 or something while still at level 10. Decided to level to 20 because I knew that was required to learn to ride mounts. Since I've been level 20, I've just got my fishing up to 300. Thing is, I read the thing on how to catch the turtle on here, and it said that you need a "personal level" of 30. So, does this mean I need to be level 30 to even catch the turtle, or? Anyway, around 1500 casts so far I'd reckon.
