Yes. No. Yes. I think all your arguments against that could be bypassed by using two sounds for the catch. One for when you catch something and one for everyone else.
When fishing in a group - typically in the Dalaran Sewers or for the WG fishing dailies, I often get confused when I have caught something.

I was probably unclear in my original post. This is what I meant -- my bobber has one sound, everyone else's has another.

And Cherel's reason (fishing in groups) is exactly why.

This is my first post on the forums...let me just say that I love all the threads I have read so far and reading this forum gets me through my work day until I can get home to catch some cyber fish! Don't judge me.

I have leveled my main from 1-340 in a few days thanks to all the topics and I'm aiming for Grand Master Fisherman tonight!

I think that the variable casting area is a good thing personally. I would not like to see Blizz narrow it down at all. I WOULD like to see a few trinkets or upgrades that might help to narrow it down slightly, but I think the variation keeps the STV competition interesting.

I would like to see a few more dailies, two fishing dailies just isnt enough for me. It would be nice to have some things to improve the quality of the fishing experience after maxing out in levels, but I also would like to have to work for it.

I also enjoy reading this thread, thought I would recap a bit, and add my own suggestion to the list:

Ideas so far: (some have been implemented in game already)

being able to customize your cast action
being able to customize your bobber
    a new fishing pole
    a cool new trinket.
28 or 32 slot fishing bag / tackle box
an achievement for unique fishing poles collected
    a 'killable' dark herring
Something that emulates active trolling with a lure.
    Different lures at different levels
    specific lures for specific fish.
    Accuracy tied to skill level.
    Fishing boat!!
fish from my sea turtle mount
an option on the sound tab to make other fishermen's bobber silent
    A fisherman's vest: ( w/ sockets & pockets )
a custom sound for your bobber
    additional fishing dailies

I like most of these ideas, some are actually quite cool, a trout boat mount, useable only on water.
A vest with sockets and pockets - awesome! the different lures on the vest adding to certain types of fish, or
your fishing skill in general... things along this line.
A specific bag for all these cool new items - needed.

My own ideas to improve fishing include cooking skill as well. I think you will also like this idea. Fish food & Chum. To be used at the water side to create your own fishing pool.
I have not worked out all the details, so before it gets beat up; think on how you could make it work!

What I have thought about on this so far is that it would be skill based and recipe driven. Recipes acquired thru the typical game mechanics; quests, drops and (of course) fish-able loot. Each recipe would require it’s own mats; different types of fish, spices etc…more ingredients, more complex ingredients, harder to acquire ingredients for the higher end recipes. The cooking skill required would naturally go up as the harder recipes are used. And the fishing skill required would also go up in order to use the higher end fish food & chum.
The item cooked/created would allow you to cast/throw that item out onto the water, creating your own fishing pool. The pool created would be dependant upon the zone it was used on; common/low level food creating a pool that naturally occurs in that zone. Higher end recipes with the complex food & chum would create a rare fish pool, giving us anglers a unique fishing pool for a totally different fishing experience!

    Thoughts & Ideas?

    I second Al's suggestion :

"I wouldn't mind if one got a better "aim" in casting as one gets higher in skill. Maybe they could "tighten up" the trapezoidal area where casts can land, so one had more control over casting"

Its really annoying to come to a pool 10 secs earlier than other contestant, and thinking you can catch 2 fish before he gets here, only to have to recast 15 times to land into the pool.

Also its fairer to the ones who actually spent the time to lvl up to 450, since now you can fish from pool @ skill 1, maybe casting for them would be so frustrating that they lvl up too.

Distinctive sound is worth more than a distinctive image. Since it's being noticed, I'd say it's not "good sound." Clearly I'm not the only one who fishes with partial attention to other things -- did you know that if you keybind "loot what's under the mouse" you can read or crochet while fishing? :-)

Having a different sound for your bobber and everyone-else's-bobber would solve the problem for most of us. Having a different sound for different fishing poles might or might not actually help, but it would certainly be... fun!

I will consistently vote AGAINST reducing the number of catches needed to level fishing. With achievements and repeatable quests making fishing more popular, the amount of time we've been willing to spend leveling fishing remains the fundamental thing that identifies us as anglers -- even those just beginning to fish and those who've had bad luck on "The One That Didn't Get Away."

I'd second all motions for a fishing-specific bag (Tackle Box or Fishing Creel) and a Fishing Vest.

Speaking of The One That Didn't Get Away, I'd like to see a cooking recipe for Dark Herring. The achievement for cooking and eating this would be "Vengence is Sweet," the item description should say "Are you satisfied now?" and it should give a one-hour buff (as do other emotion foods) reading "Satisfied."

    1. I wouldn't mind seeing some sort of rep grind for catching fish in a Wintergrasp type of setting. A quartermaster for fishing goods would be neat.

    2. I'm not sure what they have planned for secondary professions in cataclysm, but I wouldn't mind seeing a questline to restore nat pagle's book.

    3. Fishing up rare elites in specific nodes!

1.I would like if Blizzard would make some pools to fish in a dungeon.

2.I would even like if Blizzard would make some new addons for fishing in Wow.

I would like to see more fishing achievements. A LOT more. We're dedicated anglers... this means that we have more time and patience than others. We WILL complete the current list of fishing achievements and then wonder "what next"?

A lot of us currently have the Salty title. I expect to have mine soon enough (I have all the pre WoTLK ones, and my expansion pack arrives Thursday). I also expect to have all of the fishing achievements completed soon enough.

This will leave me with fulfilling 'personal achievements', such as "catching all of the fish listed in 'The One That Didn't Get Away'. I would enjoy it more if the game would keep track of these accomplishments and let me show them to others (currently only the first fish for TOTDGA counts... after that, you already have achieved the goal).
