[Fishing] What would you like to see in Cataclysm for fishing?

  1. Chipper <Angler>, 4 months ago:

Every new expansion brings the opportunity to change a tradeskill for the better. Cataclysm, with all of it's water-based dungeons and zones plus the revamped old zones (some flooded) should offer many new opportunities for innovation in our favorite WoW pasttime.

Here are a few items I'd like to see in Cataclysm: (just dreaming and wishing)

    1) Fishing Boats - these could be one of the new water mounts. Only usable in bodies of water (obviously) and limited to how far out you can venture (fatigue sets in). You could fish while seated in a boat. Boats could come in 3 different speeds: basic, fast and speedy. Eliminate the need for water walking potions / spells. Obtainable only by fishermen at certain skill levels (300, 375, 450, 500?) Possibly allow 1 to 2 other friends to join you for a fishing expedition and related quests.

    2) New fishing derby. We know that many zones are changing and the possibility that the STV derby may change dramatically or possibly be relocated or even go away. I imagine that a new version of the fishing derby may be introduced. Perhaps with better rewards and enhancements.

    3) Fly tying skill. As part of the fishing skill, you could optionally make your own lures. Different levels of lures would act like bait but be permenant. Imagine having a lure that replaces the need for bait full time but only if you learn how to make em. Lures could go as high as +150 to fishing.

    4) Fish battles - imaging having to work to pull in a big one. It takes the regular cast to a new level. In order to land a big fish, you'd need to use a special big fish lure and need to use special hot keys to use abilities to pull in the really big ones. Makes fishing a bit more skill based rather than passive.

    5) Create your own custom fishing poles - this could be an engineering enhancement. Would love to see more custom crafted equipment like fishing poles in the game. Epic poles could be able to catch epic fish!

    6) Epic fish - have the ability to catch more uber rare fish (kinda like Old Ironjaw) only with the ability to convert it into an epic item.

    7) Spearfishing / Net fishing - who says fish can only be caught with poles? As we've seen in some quests, we can catch fish with more than just a fishing pole. Why not make it an option to what type of tool we use? With spear fishing, we could even be underwater and catch fish. No more "Can't cast while swimming" message. Would add a variety to our fishing options. Some players might just stay underwater all the time!

These are just some daydreaming ideas I had. Hopefully Bilzzard will put in 1 or 2 of these with Cataclysm.

What are some of your ideas for improving fishing with Cataclysm?

    Some of these:

and I am looking forward to the fish tank thing !!! that idea seems to be straight out of Ulitma Online, and I am gathering my strangle-keep to start feeding !!

But I had a "woeful" thought reading your post Chipper...everyone is going to be going under water, New Atlantis, Dungeons etc etc... fishing for profit will be null and void, as everyone will simply swim over to their fish of choice, grab it and start munching. *grinin*

You know that fish tank thing was an April Fools joke, right?

Flying Fish Mounts, I's settle for any aquatic epic flying mount....sea turtle, sea horse, some sort of mytical beast that you get only from fishing.

I would really like to see the fish we catch be used in more professions. Perhaps leather workers could skin them and use their scales in recipes for tailoring, leatherworking, blacksmithing and even possibly engineering. I can't stand the thought of fishing for any period of time and then vendoring all that I caught.

New lures would make me very happy, tired of looking at this same two feather thing for so long.

Just more stuff for Anglers, NOT achievment hunters twinks etc just stuff that is cool and useful for Anglers.
I appear to be one of the few anglers on my realm who even bothers going for the look and all.
id like to see some more fishing clothes ie sets of fishing overalls with a small + fishing, even + 2 would be better than nothing.
New lures would be nice yes even horde and ally specific lures would make a change.
and the whole fish scales in proffs thing makes sense too, even if its things like sharkskin which you would need to fishup fight kill then skin, that sounds cool btw.

id like to see a more complex fishing mechanic.

Firstly directional wind mechanism put into place for casting....
A casting bar that governs the distance of a cast, based on the winds direction
Casting into the wind would account for a longer castbar timer etc

Secondly for the lure placement on either left or right side of the pond. It would
work very much like a mobile bowling game. the spin factor might have to account
    for the winds direction etc

Now once that's out the way, would come the real fishing.

Basically this would work like thrusting hodirs spear quest.

Would involve its own "multi" buttoned cast bar...

    The ratchet screams!
    The ratchet screams!
    The ratchet screams!
    The ratchet screams!
    The ratchet screams!
    The ratchet screams!
    The ratchet screams!
    The ratchet screams!
    The ratchet screams!
    The ratchet screams!
    The ratchet screams!

would result in hitting the reduce drag "button" 11 times
    otherwise you would loose moby.

In all seriousness having a cast bar with tighting the drag
and releasing the pressure with of course cranking speed keys
would add that little bit extra to fishing.

Given the nature of fishing is not "steady cycles" as it seem to be
for raiding this would not be a consistent pattern of key presses
and can be varied based on the fishes size, temperament etc
Mind you catching moby would take longer then raids today:P

The only catch(s) i see with this system would be trying to cast/catch that standard/epic
fish on high server ping. And well the other being fishing isnt something thats done in
a few seconds, or is it ?

    on another note;

I would like to see fishing glasses, so well players can actually see fish under the glare
of the water, and target the big one.

-ofhand item the gaff or harpoon for landing moby would be a must:P

Polgara, i read this, re-read it and then I am still not visualizing what your menaing here. sry.
But the gaf, or the harpoon, I am with ya on those. I have the one from the very nice walrus man, he sold it to me onthe cheap, cause he likes me so very much. :-)

  10. Christhina <Angler>, 2 months ago:

    Simply this.

If they wish to change the mechanics of how a fish is caught - then I'd like to see an option in the interface saying "New fishing mechanics". Turn it on by default by all means, but if the new mechanic doesn't appeal to some of the more senior players (perhaps because we haven't got ZOMG insta-reactions, or aren't "twitchy" enough), then let us go back to the old style and whittle away our time happily catching fish "a la Classic Style".

Mind you - kudos to you all who've posted so far, there are some interesting and very fun concepts in this thread!
