[Fishing] WotLK: Fishing and Achievements

My 70 warlock wasn't able to solo Gahz'ranka (I was seeing if I could farm the tome of polymorph: turtle). He was ??, and wowwiki.com says he's a ?? boss, but mentions that two 70 druids were able to take him down. I think ?? means he will essentially be 3 levels higher than you.

But yes, "Salty Petre" must yet live.

    RE: Grand Master Angler--

If only one person can have this title per server, does anyone know how time zones will factor in to this? I can't remember how the last launch went, but will folks who are able to buy copies of the game on the east coast for an east coast server have a jump on someone farther west who plays on an east coast server?

Or might the expansion not go live at midnight eastern?

    Hope this makes sense...

  3. Pipre <Deadly Salty>, 4 years ago:

You're absolutely correct. The earlier time zones should be able to purchase the game earlier in the day, meaning that by the time PST people can buy it the EST people will be at about 425 fishing >.<

It's possible that Blizzard might try to have all the vendors start selling after a certain time, which would be equal across all three time zones, but I doubt it.

I just submitted a bug report about the 100/250/500/1000 Fish achievements and could use another set of eyes to test it and make sure I'm not crazy. I was working on my exploration and fishing achievements at the same time and would notice that my "caught fish" counter would increment while fishing in one place, but would go back to a previous number when I zoned. I've hit 480 fish caught at least three times now as a result.

Another note: Don't fly west of Sholazar Basin over the water, you'll be dismounted once you enter "The Frozen Sea (Northrend)", which has not been tagged as flyable (likely to keep people from flying outside of Icecrown). I did this while looking for a potential spawn point for "Moonglow Cuttlefish School" (no luck so far).

I didn't even think of that. You're totally right, and you've dashed my hopes of becoming my server's Grand Master Angler. I'm on CST, which is an hour behind my server's time (EST).

I hope Blizzard will realize this and change something about how those titles work.

I made a post in the beta forums entitled: Of Achievements and Timezones. Haven't checked the responses, hoping for something blue.

I don't have the source handy, but I believe Tigole has recently stated that the "First class/profession" titles have been removed. Though, the "first boss kill"t titles remain.

Ah, you are right. I did a little digging, and here's the blue post: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=9336520906&pageNo=6&sid=2000#106

Verissi - I'm glad I'm not the only one that cannot find Moonglow Cuttlefish Schools. And in addition to the new area of sea, the current build more-or-less removes fatigue when flying over deep sea, so you can fly almost to the edge of the map.

Perhaps there is something slightly odd happening with the catch achievements. I got up to 138 catches, then Northrend crashed about 15 minutes later, and I was back to 100 when I logged back on. However, it crashed again at 255 catches, and did not regress to 250. It might be the case that achievements have a slightly different "roll back" point. Everything in the game should roll back to precisely the same point after a server crash. But we know that is not consistent (hence the duplicating of quest rewards, by turning in a quest a minute before a crash, and so on). But it is hard to explain the lose of hundreds of catches.

  10. Pipre <Deadly Salty>, 4 years ago:

Just rolled in to say that Tigole said the removed the titles (YAY!) but it's already posted, so let me see if I can find a link about our 'rollback' issue here...

Found it, with simple response from Tigole: "We're looking into it."

I noticed this as well and figured I was safe to circle the continent...until I went near Sholazar's coast *grins*. Made me happy that I was a mage, especially since there is a fatigue area out there that I found quickly.

I'm wondering if the Moonglow Cuttlefish Schools are (or will be) rare spawns from the Deep Sea Monsterbelly Schools, so I'll be fishing those to death to see if I can confirm/deny that. It wouldn't make sense for them to be so, but who knows.

The rollbacks I'm used to, but my catch count rewinding was during normal travel through Azeroth and some limited mage porting with no server crashes at all. It seemed to be in very specific circumstances that I couldn't quite narrow down, but I reported it dutifully in-game and will see if I can get it figured out so we don't end up with more frustrated anglers in the future.

  12. Lanchester <Angler>, 4 years ago:

Thank you everyone for looking into my quesiton.

  13. Verissi <Angler>, 4 years ago:

Well, I still have not been able to locate the Moonglow Cuttlefish Schools, but I did find out that Realm First achievements are still active in build 8905...hit 450 and got it for Northrend (but no title). I wish this had gone to El, though, since I know you hit 450 before I did :-( Incidentally, they are broadcast EVERYWHERE apparently, since I got whispers from all kinds of people in many zones immediately afterwards.

I'm still after those silly Cuttlefish! Oh, in other news, I actually fished up my first Mr. Pinchy (over 3k crawdads and the bugger hasn't shown a claw for me up until now). Sadly it was in beta and even worse, the server crashed before I could click to loot him.

  14. Verissi <Angler>, 4 years ago:

Quick update: Tigole confirmed that the Moonglow Cuttlefish School pools have not been added to the beta servers yet, so I'll cross that one off of my list...for now.

  15. Oberweiss <Angler>, 4 years ago:

I was lucky enough to be sent a beta invite today, so hopefully I can help gather data once I get settled. I'll be on US Northrend PVE. :)

  16. Verissi <Angler>, 4 years ago:

Welcome to beta, Oberweiss! I'm also on Northrend PVE, so if you're Horde-side, look me up if you need anything (80 mage, same name as I am here, and 80 death knight Tyrandius).

Good news from Northrend as well! Moonglow Cuttlefish Schools were introduced in today's build, so the Northrend Angler achievement can be completed now. I found a few pools south of Borean Tundra in The Frozen Sea, so it's likely that they appear all over The Frozen Sea "zone". I'll double-check the areas around Icecrown and Sholazar Basin after I get some rest to see if they have been renamed from "The Frozen Sea (Northrend)" and had any fishing pools/areas introduced around there.

  17. el <Nat Pagle's Love Child>, 4 years ago:

Thanks Verissi. As an aside, Dalaran has also changed a lot too this build (link has more detail, but I'm still checking).

Oh, and back on topic, Old Crafty and Old Ironjaw are now separate achievements. Mr. Pinchy has also been removed from the One That Didn't Get Away (there is still an achievement for the Magical Crawdad).

    (And welcome, Oberweiss.)

  18. Verissi <Angler>, 4 years ago:

Short update on "The Lurker Above" achievement...

Entrance into Serpentshrine Cavern is still bugged and nobody can get in (stupid waterfall isn't going away!). Once I can get in, I'm going to test and see if a "parachute cloak with a water walking elixir" strategy to see if it's possible. I'm known for doing crazy/stupid/silly things in the name of science anyway :-P

....Lurker, on the other hand is not such an easy fight. He has tons of health, and even getting to him is quite difficult, if not impossible without clearing all the trash in the intance...

I actually solo fished up Lurker today so I confirm it IS possible...and actually really easy (IF you're a priest). All you need to do is levitate down to, and walk over the water over to Lurker. Obviously you die once you fish him up (21,000 melee hit on me), but it IS possible.

WoWWiki tells me that normal water walking will protect you from the fish and water debuff, but I noticed that if you jump from the first platform (the ledge where the elevator let's you off) you'll hit the water, walk for a few seconds, and then fall in. I don't know if that's because of the IMPACT or because the fish knock you down (they're not supposed to).

Note: I did this on Live, not the beta. My character is still in the process of being copied over D:

Wasnt there a "Fishin up some booze" achievement a while ago?
