MoP [15640] New Companion - Fishy

  • Astragal, April 2012

    Potentially a fishing related companion from the latest beta;

    Fishy
Right Click to summon and dismiss Bubbles.

    source: http://mop.wowhead.com/spell=122748

So looks like it summons a companion called 'Bubbles'.

I had a feeling visiting Glassfin Village in The Jade Forest zone yesterday, that the fish in a bubble, which looks a likely candidate for this NPC would be made available. It can be seen in the Glassfin Village inn as a goldfish floating around in a bubble.

So perhaps a companion available this new faction, the 'Glassfin Jinyu', or via fishing (loot or reward)

I find the whole Glassfin Jinyu interesting. In their village there are some fishing by casting fishing nets which at least gives an in-game animation for this form of fishing. Also they 'farm fish' with underwater wooden cages around the waters edge. Possibly a way for players to 'farm' fish with The Anglers as we will be able to grow and harvest items in our own Farm with The Tillers.

It is not possible to reach The Anglers as that zone is blocked off to see if there are any similar set ups. Anyhow food for thought.

  • Astragal, April 2012

    Another potential fishing related companion;

    Shore Crab
Right Click to summon and dismiss your crab.

    source: http://mop.wowhead.com/spell=123212

  • el, April 2012

For reference, new pets categorized as Aquatic - and therefore most likely to caught by fishing - are:

    • Baby Skark (lurking for years in data files, never seen)
    • Bubbles (presumably also "Fishy")
    • Shore Crab (but found as a critter around the Anglers Wharf)
    • Tiny Water Strider
    • Turquoise Turtle (Azshara wild pet)

There are a few other pet families that might spawn a fish catch, such as the Otter Pup.

I'm told that Fishy is a reward for a quest in the Jade Forest.

  • Astragal, April 2012

Ok that makes sense as we can see now the Tiny Goldfish as The Anglers faction reward which is much the same model I expect.

One thing I am still a little puzzled by is that there is a NPC in Pearlfin Village, The Jade Forest called Bubblemaker Ashji <Pet Vendor> who walks around the village with a group of the same companion Tiny Goldfish. The vendor does not sell anything yet (maybe requires more faction to access). Maybe The Angler faction version is a colour variant.

    Image: Tiny Goldfish - Detail

  • Astragal, April 2012

Confirmed. 'Fishy' is a reward from the quest 'Let Them Burn' given by 'Admiral Taylor' in the Pearlfin Village, The Jade Forest.

  • Idoru, April 2012

This must be a recent addition.

I have finished all quests in Jade Forest and didn't get this reward.

It maybe an Alliance only quest line, if you you are playing a Horde character on the Beta server?

    Looking back through the quest chain (it's right from the near beginning quests for Alliance at Wayward Landing) it seems to start with;

    Quest: The Missing Admiral

    leading all the way to a quest given in the Pearlfin Village;

    Quest: Let Them Burn

    which is shown on wowhead as the one giving this pet reward;

    Let Them Burn

There are other questlines which may be involved such as the ones from Lorewalker Cho (notably The Dream Brew which takes you on a flight to the location of Prince Anduin) and another loot drop quest item, Trail of the White Pawn, although I do not know if this is necessary or just a breadcrumb quest.

As a note although you get the 'Fishy' companion as the final reward, on learning it, it does not show up in the new Pet Journal so it is not possible to summon at the moment. I guess they need to update the list of pets in the journal for the new ones.

  • el, April 2012

The pet was added as a reward to an existing quest, which means any character that previously completed that quest cannot get the new reward. Just a quirk of testing.

Command /use petname (eg /use fishy) will summon any pet you thought you had learnt. The current User Interface is heavily bugged.

Yeah, I always save one character copy for when they say everything is done.
Then I play through the quests one last time.

Demands for Mists of Pandaria

  • Enarka, February 2012

    Hey everyone,

All of you anglers, do you think we should band together and make an exhaustive list of ideas/suggestions for Mists of Pandaria, in a neat bundle ? Perhaps this way we might get something really interesting come around the next expansion, even if only one of the potentially hundreds of ideas is taken.

    Are you interested ?

  • extremeangler, February 2012

Seriously? You have to ask if we're interested!? ;) Lets get rolling!

Here is my list of suggestions that I will be adding to:

    • Legendary fishing pole
    • More achievements!
    • Fix for water walking (when steering using your mouse, you often fall into water)
    • Besides the two fishing contests, maybe a general fishing event, like a fishing trip kind of thing? With epic drops! This is too much, I know, but it would be WICKED!

Heh... like a fishing Raid or Dungeon :)

"The elite 5-man group, all known for their fishing skill prowess, make a grueling climb to some of the highest lakes known in Azeroth in search of the <insert name of insanely strong and difficult to catch fishing mob here>, and thwarted by demons and accosted by scantily clad Amazons every step of the way."

Yeh, a raid or dungeon which scales based on fishing skill. :)

And while we're at it, why not a Monthly Cooking Contest? "The Fel Iron Chef!"

But having said all that, I have to admit to being very satisfied with the current fishing/cooking structure, rewards and dailies. But more buzz and chrome wouldn't hurt!

I personaly love the Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole but would love more fishing gear like a hierloom fishing pole or at least a cosmetic set that we can use in the transmog to change are normal gears look into a fisherman / fisherlady look.

That way at least the big old death knight can look like he is kicking back fishing and still be able to knock that rogue out for thinking he was in cloth while fishing ^_^ always disliked not being able to look like im into fishing just cause some one would gank me for it.

  • Lightwell, February 2012

Legendary Fishing Pole -- I love this idea *so much*. I'll expand on it:

Since it would have to be accessible for everyone, it would be preferable to have the base item either be fished up, or created as an epic item from Archaeology. Either way, it would have to be able to be actively obtained, and not a drop from a Bag of Fishing Treasures.

Components could be fishable, but just to keep it legen-wait for it-dary, the fishing areas would have to have some level of difficulty to get to:

PVP: The waterfall in Battle of Gilneas.
PVP: The moat around Blacksmith in Arathi Basin.
Raid: Serpentshrine Cavern -- Anywhere in the water.
Raid: Firelands -- Anywhere in the lava.
Dungeon: Wailing Caverns -- Anywhere in the water.
Dungeon: Maraudon -- Anywhere in the water, or even have the base item be a drop from Rotgrip.
Dungeon: Zul'Gurub -- Heck, they could even bring back an updated version of Nat's Fish Terminator, and use that as the base item.
Dungeon: End Time -- The lava near the Echo of Baine, or the pool surrounding the Echo of Tyrande.

The PVP components would need some balancing work. I can already see players trying to kick me (Reason: "Noob is afk") if I was off in the corner fishing instead of helping the team. Maybe drop rates for components from PVP areas could be a little higher for these areas? Maybe 5%? Something high enough that it could be done without having the rest of the team complain about your fishing compulsion.

    Much.

The Raid and Dungeon components could be done after enough trash has been cleared to reach a fishing spot, so after completing a dungeon, you could stick around and fish at your leisure. And in all these cases, the areas should be active enough to prevent botting, or at least make it extremely difficult. Maybe throw in a mechanic that would spawn an add occasionally.

And just to make it annoying -- add in The Limnologist and The Oceanographer as requirements, too, so there would be a time component with the Winter Squid.

Fix for water walking -- and levitate. I notice that I fall into the water sometimes when mouse-moving, too. It's like the pitch of your toon gets overly sensitive, and it thinks you want to dive in.

Another Meta -- Just because we need something even crazier to get, how about a meta-achievement for winning both the STV and Northrend contests? One of the things I've noticed after winning a contest on a toon, is that I lose all interest in going back to the tournament, because I already have the Master Angler achievement. I need more motivation to go back. The meta could award a title like "the Merciless Angler", since winning once earns the admiration and envy of your peers, but winning twice earns only the ire of everyone in guildchat.

  • Kylkiluut, February 2012

    Lightwell wrote:

Perhaps that should be an achievement?

  • Runs, February 2012

Cata introduced xp for mining & herbing, why not for fishing? Now, that would be an Iron Man, level-capped by fishing only!

MoP: Anglers Rewards

  • Astragal, April 2012

    Great info once again el!

Looking at the raft details it does not seem to have any restriction in where you can use it, unlike the one you mentioned from the quest at the Lagoon. Hopefully that is the case and we can use it anywhere. If so, it is a great addition ;)

Couple of questions. Can you sit on it? (assuming it is the same buff as the quest one) and it does not indicate being BoP. The tooltip does not include the description 'Mount' it looks atm as something that is potentially tradable with others. Guess we will see.

  • el, April 2012

I agree that the lack of a description of a location restriction is promising, but remember that the quest raft doesn't state a restriction either, the raft buff simply disappears when one reaches the Jade Forest.

You can sit on the quest raft (when not moving), and fish while seated. The quest raft is a temporary spell buff, not an item, nor learnt. It is fundamentally different to a mount, with no requirements for riding skill, and, of course, the ability to cast while on the vehicle.

Data mining is very risky here, because nobody has manage to find the Fishing Raft itself, even though it appears as an item on the vendor. The "item" may only be a spell... There were a few rafting-like spells added with 10 minute durations, so I suspect this will be a 10 minutes every 60 minutes item. Lack of binding may be moot if the spell requires Anglers Revered to use - only those with the reputation can ever use it.

  • Astragal, April 2012

Ok I was going on the description you gave for the Lagoon quest raft which says a 60 minute buff.

    But your analysis does seem more likely that it may only be a shorter term buff, also considering the tootlip text;

    1 Hr Cooldown
"Great for fishing, but takes on water... so don't stay out too long!"

Something like the rare quality Archaeology items and shorter buffs with longer cooldown maybe (and needing to be in your bag)

    Interesting the spells you noted and the subtle differences like;

    Rafting

    Buff
    Rafting
Grants the ability to raft across water
    10 minutes remaining

    and

    Rafting

    Buff
    Rafting
Grants the ability to raft across oceanic water.
    1 hour remaining

So, difference in duration of 10mins and 1 hour and also type of water i.e. water and 'oceanic water'.

Looking forward to seeing how these develop on the Beta server.

Oceanic water rafting is the quest item. In practice the oceanic ("coastal") restriction enforces itself, because all Krasarang Wilds' inland rivers flow into the sea via small waterfalls, which makes it tricky to ride the raft from the sea up onto the rivers.

Another curious aside is the Water Strider model: There are over 10 differently coloured versions. That could be an artist at play. Or it could be that there will be a family of slightly different Water Strider mounts to collect.

True, though there are other areas to access coastal water (oceanic) such as Sri La fishing village in The Jade Forest, for instance, talking of the actual buff. Maybe other similar buffs for other areas or variants.

Will be a real shame if there is no option for a hour long buff item to use everywhere.

Or perhaps it spawns in some different colours, as some hunter pets do. Though 10 seems a lot!

Why I love Beta. So many, 'what if's' ;)

Noticed the other day when testing, that the buff stays on even when you dismount and run (don't mount as you lose the 'Raft' buff) so it was quite possible to run up to Krasarang River go onto the water and the raft appeared.

Few things noted using the raft, remembering it is still early beta and plenty can change.

    1. Buff stays on within Krasarang Wilds as el noted. This also includes the main river up to the Falls where you move to another area in the zone and it goes. So not just 'Oceanic' i.e. sea.
    2. You can fish while on the Raft but you can also use weapons as a hunter or spells etc. You can do this while moving which I think is unique for mounts? So I could ride the Raft while kiting a shark until dead. Some potential for exploits perhaps.
    3. Taking damage is like a mount in that you take damage and can be dismounted by a stun, otherwise you can outrun a mob. But you can also heal while moving as per 2. It may work better if it acts like waterwalking in that, if you take damage the buff goes.
    4. Hunter's pets are not automatically put to Passive so if you or the pet aggro then if on other setting it will fight the mob. Eventually if you keep going, it will despawn and you need to resummon.
    5. If you ride it onto land you get a sudden jolt forward as it despawn. You can avoid this if you jump as you hit the land.
    6. Sometimes it does not spawn and you are basically waterwalking. To get it to spawn either run and jump usually does it or dive and resurface. Bit like waterwalking proper. Latency can make it tough work.
    7. As with 2. you can summon and dismiss pets as you move/ travel. Really anything apart from try to summon another mount. Not tried a mage Blink while mounted which could be interesting.
    8. At level 85 with swift training it is 200% normal travel speed. Basically like being mounted with a waterwalking potion or DK mount etc.

Overall it is a fascinating mechanic. Part buff, part mount. I hope any potential for exploits does not mean it is removed as it is really a great thing. I also hope they introduce Rafts or similar buff water mounts.

Being able to stand or sit and fish from it is very cool (now do the same for the magic carpet!)

This is especially so for the northern end of Pandaria which has sheer cliffs with few places for fishing from land in parts. Consider like parts of Northrend. Just opens up a lot of possibilities for cool fishing spots. And why it will be a shame if the faction reward raft is only 10 minute or similar short duration with 1 hour cooldown.

MoP Engineering: Water Walking Tinker!!!

  • Meadows, March 2012

They just datamined something REALLY cool for us Engineers who are also fishermen!

    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VsGYPA7Ezso/T2xvEoN1yMI/AAAAAAAABLI/Qjklh2fstek/s1600/109099-belt-tinker-watergliding-jets.png

    Belt Tinker: Watergliding Jets
Permanently attaches waterjets to your belt, allowing you to walk on water and swim quickly until canceled.

For those of us who aren't DKs and Shamans and love Darkmoon Faire fishing (and fishing in general), this is a GODSEND. Now I don't have to stock up on Glassfin Minows and Water walking elixirs anymore! ^_^

Not to mention it sounds awesome that it's labeled "until canceled". So I'm not constantly watching the buff having to renew it every single second.

  • el, March 2012

Unfortunately, based on this spell, it only lasts 10 seconds (and activated once every minute), which would not be much good for fishing. We'll have to see what emerges in-game.

  • Meadows, March 2012

blech... that rots. I was hoping rather based on the tooltip when it said "lasts for until canceled".... but seeing the "for" in there probably means the "until canceled" is a placeholder. =/

  • Thay, March 2012

They might allow it, if it follws the same rules as effects like levitation.
Given, according to the data files people are mining, the Priests levitation spell is now "until canceled" as well.

  • Marlburo, April 2012

All i want is a vanilla-like group of REALLY hard to catch fish like the pound fish.....catch them all for something REALLY cool (like a legendary pole). Pool fish, non-pool mix would be ideal but, I don't care too much either way!
