The Old Gnome and the Sea
To complete this achievement simply catch something from a pool! For a basic introduction to fishing pools, see Equipment and Pools. For pool locations see Pool Locations.
This achievement can sometimes be completed by a catching fish in open water - for example by catching Firefin Snapper or Oily Blackmouth, which can be found in both pools and open water. Fishing School of Tastyfish and (at least some) wreckage pools may not complete the achievement.
Fish Don't Leave Footprints
Learn the ability to Find Fish. It can be learnt from Weather-Beaten Journals. These are found Curious Crate, Heavy Supply Crate, Iron Bound Trunk, Mithril Bound Trunk, Watertight Trunk, Tightly Sealed Trunk, and rarely from daily fishing quests in Old Azeroth, Outland and Northrend. The Journal requires 100 fishing skill to use.
I recommend you complete this achievement early, because the ability will help you spot pools. Zangarmarsh's Steam Pump Flotsam are theoretically the fastest source of journals, because they contain both Curious Crate and Heavy Supply Crate. However the pools tend to get "cherry picked", so can be hard to find. Alternatively, almost any wreckage pool in Old Azeroth can be fished, or if you are prepared to wait a few days, complete daily fishing quests.
The Scavenger
Catch something from each of these wreckage pools:
| Pool (School) | Common Catch | Zones and Areas |
|---|---|---|
| Bloodsail Wreckage Pool | Iron Bound Trunk | Coastal: The Cape of Stranglethorn (General), Northern Stranglethorn (General) |
| Floating Wreckage Pool | Mithril Bound Trunk |
|
| Schooner Wreckage Pool | Watertight Trunk |
|
| Steam Pump Flotsam | Inland: Zangarmarsh | |
| Waterlogged Wreckage Pool | Iron Bound Trunk |
|
These pools tend to get "cherry picked" by anglers completing this achievement: The pools all share spawning points with at least one other pool type. The pools required by the achievement tend to get fished out, while the other pool types are ignored. After a while, all (or almost all) of the pools in an area have become non-achievement pools. If you cannot find the achievement pool type, simply fish other pool types in the relevant zone and water until the achievement pool appears.
Outland Angler
Catch something from each of these Outland pools:
| Pool (School) | Common Catch | Zones and Areas |
|---|---|---|
| Bluefish School | Icefin Bluefish | Inland: Nagrand (except Forge Camp Hate) |
| Brackish Mixed School | Inland: Terokkar Forest (Rivers), Zangarmarsh | |
| Highland Mixed School | Furious Crawdad | Inland: Terokkar Forest (Lakes) (lakes Blackwind, Ere'Noru and Jorune) |
| Mudfish School | Figluster's Mudfish | Inland: Nagrand (except Forge Camp Hate) |
| School of Darter | Golden Darter | Inland: Terokkar Forest (Rivers) |
| Sporefish School | Zangarian Sporefish | Inland: Zangarmarsh |
Highland Mixed School can only be found in elevated waters of Terokkar Forest, so require a flying mount, flight ability, summon, or creative methods to climb mountains. Otherwise fishing these pools is fairly straightforward, and you should have no difficulty finding fresh pools.
Northrend Angler
Catch something from each of these Northrend pools:
| Pool (School) | Common Catch | Zones and Areas |
|---|---|---|
| Borean Man O' War School | Coastal: Borean Tundra | |
| Deep Sea Monsterbelly School | Coastal: The Frozen Sea | |
| Dragonfin Angelfish School | Inland: Dragonblight | |
| Fangtooth Herring School | Inland and Brackish: Howling Fjord | |
| Glacial Salmon School | Inland: Grizzly Hills | |
| Glassfin Minnow School | Glassfin Minnow | Inland: Crystalsong Forest |
| Imperial Manta Ray School | Coastal: Borean Tundra, Dragonblight, Grizzly Hills, Howling Fjord | |
| Moonglow Cuttlefish School | Coastal: The Frozen Sea | |
| Musselback Sculpin School | Inland: Borean Tundra | |
| Nettlefish School | Inland: Sholazar Basin |
Obviously this achievement requires access to Northrend, so requires Wrath of the Lich King. Deep Sea Monsterbelly School and Moonglow Cuttlefish School are in The Frozen Sea, the deep water off the southern side of Northrend. Other pools should be easy to find in the zones/waters listed above.
Guild Achievements
There are several guild achievements that require fish to be caught from pools:
- That's A Lot of Bait - Catch 10,000 fish from any fishing pools.
- We're Gonna Need A Bigger Boat - Catch 25,000 fish from any fishing pools.
- Pandaren Angler - Catch 25,000 fish from fishing pools in Pandaria.
- Like Shooting Fish In A Barrel - Catch 50,000 fish from any fishing pools.
That's A Lot of Bait allows the purchase the recipe for Seafood Magnifique Feast (from guild vendors in cities). Catches from Pandarian pools count towards both the Pandaren Angler achievement and the other pool catch achievements.
Guilds often struggle to complete these achievements, especially smaller guilds. Some suggestions:
- Hold guild pool-fishing events or contests. Social fishing can work surprisingly well. Only fishing skill 1 is required to fish pools, so every guild members can learn to fish and contribute, even if they have never fished before.
- Encourage guild members to level fishing (and perhaps cooking) by fishing from pools.
- Fish from pools for the ingredients to cook raid food.
- Encourage members to seek personal fishing achievements or rare catches from pools, such as One That Didn't Get Away (from Fangtooth Herring School), and Sea Turtle, Tiny Carp or Mr. Pinchy.

Pandaren Angler Achievement Bug
Marlburo, January 2013:
I track the "Pandaren Angler" guild achievement and noticed something odd when I was fishing Tiger Gourami pools today in "The Ancient Passage".....they don't register! They do however add ticks to "Like Shooting Fish in a Barrel" and I'm assuming "We're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat" achievements. Kinda mad cause I just noticed and they are a big money maker for me....
