Below are readers' comments about "Wrath of the Lich King":
WotLK: Fishing and Achievements
Itty, July 2008:
As mentioned on the "Achievements" page here at El's Anglin, several (seventeen, to be exact) fishing-related achievements are so far planned for Wrath of the Lich King. Many are not yet finished but will be fleshed out as Beta unfolds.
I was fortunate enough to be invited to Beta recently and, like any good (obsessed) angler, one of my first acts was to try fishing. Sadly, there are no new "fishable" fish yet in the game. There is a "northern barb fish", which is the objective of a two-part quest where the first part involves literally banging on stuff that looks like seaweed until one of three things pops out: an undead spy, a crab, or the barbed fish. You then get pulled into combat with whatever popped out. It's reminiscent of the Terokkar "Taken in the Night" quest where you have to free people from spider cocoons. In other words, not very fun. It took me a while to do the two-part series and there wasn't even a fun item reward. It was just around 4 or 5 gold per stage.
As also indicated here on El's Anglin', there's also a Northern Salmon quest fish, but I haven't done that quest yet.
Going back to achievements, some of the most interesting achievements tie into Burning Crusade. There are two Mr. Pinchy achievements: one for getting his pet, the other for fishing him (or one of thirteen other rare fish). Oddly, the "Mr. Pinchy's Magical Crawdad Box" achievement does not automatically light up the "The Deadliest Catch" achievement, although you obviously need to catch Mr. Pinchy to get his box. I submitted a "bug" suggestion regarding this.
There is also an achievement relating to the Old Man Barlo fishing quests. If you've done all five of them, this achievement lights up. This achievement was lit up for me immediately upon entering Beta without having to do them all again.
The most interest achivement of all, though, is connected to the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza. There is a "Master Angler of Stranglethorn" achievement but, frustratingly, it does not currently check to see if you've already won the tournament. It did not light up for me, despite me having in my possession and using both of the rewards available from the tournament. There are other achievements in the game that check for possessed items, though. For example, I got a "Feat of Strength" achievement because I have a really old, no longer available, epic mount in my bank. If the game can look for such an item, it can clearly look for others like bind-on-pickup tournament victory items. Hopefully, this will be fixed as Beta progresses. I submitted a suggestion on this, too.
That's about all there is to report on fishing in WotLK so far. I haven't even found a Grand Master fishing trainer yet, and I don't expect to see one soon. As we all know, fishing is never near the top of the developers' to-do lists, so it will likely be a while before fishing pools and new fish make it into Beta.
As they do, though, I'll keep you updated.
Happy fishing!
Itty, StormreaverSharina, July 2008:
I hope they fix those "bugs" in beta before release.
I cannot imagine how many people might be frustrated about having their previous wins/achievements not count in the current time. It's kind of a slap in the face to the old school players, who in my opinion, have been very loyal to this game.
I don't want to have to win it again -- also I think this is unfair to the people who have not won it yet. They may have to compete against other first timers, AND people who are trying to win it again just to get their achievement checked off. :(
el, July 2008:
Thanks for posting, Itty. Glad to see I'm not the only one fishing in the beta! I look forward to further reports.
I've updated the Wrath of the Lich King pages.
Interesting that you received the Old Man Barlo achievement retrospectively. El did not, even though she has done them all many times. I assume that "The Deadliest Catch" requires a catch because some of the fish are not bound on pickup, so having them in your inventory means nothing. But that isn't the case for Mr. Pinchy and a few others.
Tigole (one of the designers) is active on various forums at the moment, giving the impression that Blizzard still haven't finished working on achievements. So maybe we won't all have to win the Booty Bay contest again... It will be interesting to see how many points they award for winning (the current points totals are place-holders only). Personally I think winning the contest is one of the hardest activities in the entire game, particularly on a mature PvP realm. But those that have never tried tend to assume it just requires "fishing" skill, and so is "easy".
The current beta is still an alpha: Lots of core content missing (quests, zones, professions, abilities, you name it), and minimal server stability (last night Northrend was crashing or hitting 5-minute lag spikes several times each hour).
Fishing as a profession is essentially not yet implemented. I hope they find time to complete it. In The Burning Crusade nothing fishing-related changed after the start of beta testing. That meant the release version had missing content (Blade's Edge, recipes in new low-level areas, etc) and design flaws (Golden Darter out of balance, broken distribution of fresh/salt-water fish in new low-level areas - which is happening again now in Stormwind, pools that couldn't be fished by those with short legs, and so on).
Oberweiss, July 2008:
Thank you for the updates! Keep them coming. Also, thanks for submitting those suggestions regarding retroactively achieving the fishing contest goal. I already get dirty looks for having won the trinket on my druid. I wouldn't want to make her win a third time; I might be exiled.
Sharina, July 2008:
Those of you who are in the Closed Beta could also make a post regarding the achievement for the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza, or any other issues on the Beta forums. Perhaps Blizzard will note the amount of feedback and act accordingly to change/fix things.
There is already a post being made about the Master Angler issue here:

Itty, July 2008:
In what may be a world first, I won the fishing tournament twice in one day. The first tournament was on my hunter alt, giving her the trinket. The second win was two hours later on the PvP Beta server. Just between you and me, I was the only one even in Stanglethorn Vale on the Beta server during this time, so I could have taken the full two hours and still won. Let's keep that our little secret, though ;)
Anyway, I fished the tournament to test the "Master Angler of Stranglethorn" achievement. Although Tigole has indicated that the achievement now checks for the pole or trinket, this build is not yet active. When I logged in, I was still not credited with the win. Upon winning the tournament, though, the achivement did light up.
Sadly, this achievement did not unlock a title to display next to my name. This was quite disappointing, of course. I submitted a suggestion reading:
"The "Master Angler of Stranglethorn" achievement, unlocked by winning the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza, does not currently provide an in-game title for players to display next to their name. Players have been calling for this title since the introduction of the tournament, and the new achievement system would be the perfect mechanism for implementing this title.
Please consider a "Master Angler" title to accompany this achievement (e.g, "Itty, Master Angler"). It would make a lot of players happy."
Hopefully, such a title will eventually be added in, but only time will tell. I'll keep you updated with any developments. In the meantime, I'll be keeping my fingers crossed!
Itty, Stormreaver
Zhivago, August 2008:
Just found a post on worldofraids.com that linked to this page listing all of the WotLK achievements, including ALOT of fishing achievements.
Have fun!!!
Asseel, August 2008:
Lots of things to get, but at least they seem manageable. Though they'll likely adapt the fishing from a school one to require more than one time doing it. Probably most if not all of them. Still, a doable list. Though the fishing in SW or IF one might be tricky for me...LOL
Stephenn, August 2008:
Hi all, I've recently received a beta key and will be glad to pass on any information that I can gleem from the beta. I noticed the same bugs that El mentioned above. But also I didn't get credit for doing all 5 of Old Man Barlow's quests (Even though I've done them 100 times probably) Submitted bug report.
Stephenn
http://wowengineer.wordpress.comStephenn, August 2008:
It looks like they've renamed a bunch of the pools of wreckage. For the achievement named "The Scavenger" you have to catch something from the following pools of wreckage:
Steam Pump Flotsam (Zangarmarsh)
Bloodsail Wreckage (STV Coastal)
Schooner Wreckage (Hillsbrad Foothills, Wetlands)
Waterlogged Wreckage (STV River, Theramore Beach)
Floating Wreckage (Feralas)The location in parentheses is where I found them.
I also noticed that Oily Blackmouth schools are now called Abundant Oily Blackmouth Schools, or Lesser OBMS, Teeming OBMS, etc. Same with Firefin Snapper Schools. I'm assuming that each level has a different number of possible fish in it.
BTW I'm on the Northrend PvE server so if you're there look me up.
Stephenn
http://wowengineer.wordpress.comel, August 2008:
Past repeatable quest achievements aren't tracked, it seems. I'm currently trying to do all the dailies to check that Barloed does award eventually. Curiously, there has been a change to the way the quest fish appear on the test server: Like the pre-TBC quest fish, they are now caught alongside an existing catch - so you get 2 fish at once. At this stage it is still possible I'm just very lucky, but every quest fish has also been caught from the very first catch.
I documented what I've discovered so far about the new pool names in the Wrath section. The patterns seem to reflect the type of trunk found - most obvious in Stranglethorn Vale, which always had two different wreckage pool types, depending on whether you were north or south of Grom'Gol.
"Lesser", "Sparse", no prefix, "Abundant", and "Teeming" imply more fish per pool, or a better catch in some way. But an initial test did not show up any differences. It seemed like the pools had simply been renamed, pending a future change. I've not rechecked them in the last week.
I'm also intrigued to know whether you find the random oily swoosh noise that has been added to Oily Blackmouth and Brackish Mixed pools as confusing as I did?
Stephenn, August 2008:
As of the most recent patch one of two things have happened regarding the "You've Been Barlowed" Achievement.
1) The objectives are now retroactive. I got credit for doing all 5 of the daily quests, without doing them all on the beta server. I haven't had a chance to do "The One that Got Away," yet. But I had done it many times on the regular server before the character copy.
2) It's glitched now and improperly gave me credit. Similar to the "Reach Level 80" achievement that I have credit for when I'm only 72.
GIGAR, August 2008:
Well... That's why they call it a beta :P
But the lvl72 bug is just hillarious, lol!Anglin Man, August 2008:
Interesting. In the beta, I got the Barloed achievement right away, but still waiting for the STV achievement to be unlocked. i'm sure it will be updated. I also hope that we can get some sort of achievement for both grand prizes. Since they are essentially quest rewards, it shouldn't be that hard to track.
I've had very little luck finding fish in North Rend so far, but mostly because I get caught up in exploring and new quests. I always think of it just after I log off. Has anyone been able to get to Dalaran, and see if fishing is possible there?
el, August 2008:
I don't think the retrospective achievements are consistent. My second version of El (that hasn't completed daily fishing quests since transfer) still doesn't have Barloed.
There are a few other bugged achievements that appeared at the same time as level 80, such as multiple exalted reputation gains. Let's hope it all gets worked out by the time it goes live.
Dalaran certainly contains fish!
Pipre, September 2008:
There are a ton of achievements that are not working retroactively that should quite obviously.:
-The fishing diplomat: I'm alliance, and I have Old Crafty, yet did not recieve credit for having fished in Ogrimmar.
-One that didn't get away: I have Old Crafty and Old Ironjaw in my inventory yet have not recieved the achievement.
-Old Man Barlowned: Can't count the number of times I've done these quests (and haven't gotten the hat, 2 ring, or croc pet), no achievement.
-Deadliest Catch: Fished up Gahz'ranka countless times as well. Have Nat Pagle's Fish Terminator equipped. No achievement.
-Lurker Above: Have the Mallet of the Tides, fished him up many times, no achievement. The following I have completed, have not recieved the achievement, but are quite easy:
-The Old Gnome and the Sea
-The Scavenger
-25 Fish to whatever the highest is. I probably got this achievement pre-BC. Spent countless hours in Azshara.http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=9336628596&postId=93356715498&sid=2000#4
el, September 2008:
They have not tracked fish catches historically, so all retrospective awards are based on Bind on Pickup items and quests - and there are very few of these for fishing. And it seems everything you did in beta was reset at the last build (Friday night).
The obvious one that Tigole responded to, was the Magical Crawdad not registering the "One That Didn't Get Away" (since the Magical Crawdad means you must have caught Mr. Pinchy). I think the only other 2 fish that could be added there are Old Crafty and Old Ironjaw, which and BoP. All the others can be traded, so having them doesn't prove you caught them.
I also agree that cross-faction Crafty/Ironjaw should count (for The Fishing Diplomat), although unfortunately not for Horde, because Ironjaw can be caught in Ironforge.
If the Deadliest Catch and Lurker Above are for fishing up the boss, then drops from that boss are not relevant, because anyone in the raid could have got them, without knowing how to fish.
Old Man Barlowned wasn't consistent before, and I guess depends on how detailed their daily quest tracking is. I assume the game doesn't need to know you have completed dailies before, as it does regular quests.
The fish catches could be calculated fairly easily from your skill level. Anglers with 375 skill have clearly caught a lot of fish. But I understand why they might want to start that fresh, since the skill level is only a rough approximation, not an accurate number.
But then beta El doesn't appear to have any achievements at the moment, so I'm not able to comment on specifics - it's all broken...
Pipre, September 2008:
I completely agree El. The question with the bosses is one I'm interested in. Since Gahz'ranka is only a lvl 63 pretty much any class should be able to go into ZG, fish, and kill him. So that one isn't too big of an issue. Lurker, on the other hand is not such an easy fight. He has tons of health, and even getting to him is quite difficult, if not impossible without clearing all the trash in the intance. In other words you're going to need a party or raid to get you to the boss, and it's a lot of work for an achievement. A lot of work those of us who have already fished him up have done WAY too many times to want to force some friends to go back and do.
I'll do it though. If I have to! Salty Petre must exist!
What you would like to see for fishing in WOTLK
Tythor, May 2008:
I would like to see a chance of pulling out a epic weapon thats fishing only obtained relevant to your character IE: for my pally it would be an epic 2h Frozen Tuna or say for a caster it would be a Staff that looks like a Stone scale Eel or hunters Lightening eel Arrows lol (ok that ones a little farfetched)
Marlburo, May 2008:
Either that or an epic fishing pole
Slavaa, May 2008:
I would like to see fishing skill used for something other than fishing eg: Fishing pole creation.
or a customizable fishing pole
Weeds, May 2008:
How about....
The fishing profession also includes bait and tackle creation. You could fish up mats to create all kinds of lures with different uses/buffs.
Trokair, May 2008:
Epic fishing gear.
Hat, Gloves, Boots, Fishing Line and Fishing Pole.
Need Purples.
Spellbinder, May 2008:
I really want the fishing chair but cant be arsed to buy TCG as that is not my flavour. So i would love to see that implemented into the fishing itself. A thing i just thought of, meaning it isnt really thought through. How about the ability to fish up a really rare quest? Whith a really rare reward:
interferenza, May 2008:
Epic fishing gear.
Hat, Gloves, Boots, Fishing Line and Fishing Pole.
Need Purples.
No. Fishing must be relaxing:) even the rare fish in the extravaganza are too much imho, equips must be dropped while fishing in some kind of places, and that's it, easy to get...
what i really want is my OWN boat used to fish far from the coast! :)
Woolwort, May 2008:
Rowboat in a can!!! A tinket that creates a tiny raft in the water that you can stand in and fish. Lasts 30 minutes and comes with a cooler fully stocked with Dark Moon Ale.
Kalarnis, May 2008:
I would like to see them add a fishing pole equivalent to Nat Pagle's Extreme Angler FC-5000 (+25) that is available to Alliance fishermen/women. I've never quite understood why the Horde get a quest for this but the Alliance doesn't. The best the Alliance can get now (aside from winning the STV Extravaganza) is Seth's Graphite Fishing Pole (+20).
Woolwort, May 2008:
A New faction maybe? You could have a little lodge by a lake where you can grind rep by doing fishing and cooking quests.
Napalm, May 2008:
Hi fellow anglers ;)
I would really like some difference in casting precision. Ridiculous a lvl 5 and a lvl 375 throws the line in the same lame manner (read usually off the pool!) I fish in real life and wonder why a Master fisher cant hit the pools better? Wake up Blizzard!
Love this site btw!
polgaras, May 2008:
What I would like to see with lich king goes as follows;
1.Net fishing added. Engineering craftable with the help of tailors. Would have a few uses. Be expensive to craft so it does not get abused to much against tradition fishermen. Used in pools only.
2.Fly fishing. Engineering craftable. Flys can be crafted from white drops of mobs. feathers and the like from different beasts. Flys can be used to target particular fish within a pool. But as is the case with fly fishing, one fly might catch one kind of fish in one pool in one area while a different fish in another with the same fly.Once the particular pool is free of that fish type, you catch nothing while the pool remains. Used in pools only.
3. Harpoon fishing. As the name indicates you get to spear your fish. Harpoon on a rope :P. All in all it will have a greater chance to miss your fish but their is a possibility of spearing 2 fish. Works on a 15second recast timer.
4. A base chance of 25% of missing your catch regardless of your fishing skill. Yes thats right 25%.
5. The old man and the sea .A simple wooden boat
to fish ofshore pools.6. Tradition wow fishing working of a lunar/tide calander.
What this means is several times a day (2 major(2hr) and 2 minor (30min) the cast timers become 10 second and 5 seconds. Within these windows their could be a chance of catching some more useful pool fish or even a necklace or wristband that turns you into a mermaid or merman.
Or even the chance to fish out a rusted pitchfork to neptune's trident. Weather these items are weapons or harpoons is
anyones guess.Mitzy, June 2008:
Epic fishing questline. Not THAT would be awesome.
Berg, June 2008:
It would be nice to see a traveling fishing tourney. Similar to the Darkmoon faire. It would have unique quests and rewards to the specific zone it was appearing. A chance to acquire rares would be nice too.
FireWolf, June 2008:
I would want a small house boat out some where in various areas that contains a faction that sells formulas to make food that provides various things like better poles or pole that provide different fishing mechanics. Mechanic could be things like clicking and dragging a dot on a bar left and right while tapping a,d,a,d,a... would reel in the catch, used to catch better fish ect... cooking could be a little more intuitive as well, and various repeatable quests would give you rep for the faction
Anglin Man, July 2008:
Engineering Skill - Depth Charge. Drop a stick of this in a pool and kabloowie! You could simply loot the fish pool then.
Of course, this would turn the Fishing Contest into a non-stop grief-a-thon for engineers, so perhaps they could be made unusable on Tastyfish Pools. Or you could drop it in regular water, and it could create a pool of random fish.
Engineering Skill - Inflatable Motor Boat, complete with a sputtering engine, and an Ice Chest. Normal mount speed on water. Only question is whether you could fish from it, so it might make a better trinket.
Sorialeth, July 2008:
I'd like to see a +5 fishing skill to gloves enchant, and a 20 slot (Or so) bag for fish.
Cleigh, July 2008:

Love this site btw!I've been thinking the same thing for years. They could have a secondary skill for precision casting.
Mr. fishy, July 2008:
I'd like to see a fisherman/woman only faction you'll have to hand in fish the better the fish more rep u get and if u reach say honered you could buy a better rod.Or you had to reel your fish in, to much and your line snaps so u loss the fish and have 5 sec debuff saying u are reapplying line.
by the way im Mr.fishy and i just joind, great site. :)
Banjai, July 2008:
I think there should be a new rod with a 'jem' slot. There could be three types of 'jem' that can be added:
a +3 fishing reel
a +5
and a +7(or something)
Epic fishing pole
Melchizedek, September 2008:
Firstly i want to say hi, this is my first time posting, although i've been a frequent visiter for some time, especially recently with all the WotLK info coming out.
I;'ve just visited MMO-Champion and found soemthing of interest for my fellow fishers, it seems that the Kalu'ak faction has a an epic fishing pole as a reputation award for exhalted the link to it is here
http://static.mmo-champion.com/mmoc/images/news/2008/september/8962/tk_4_01.jpgKeep up the good work.
el, September 2008:
Thanks Melchizedek.
Like everyone else in Europe, I'm waiting to get online to see these. MMO-Champion is data mining, and not everything data mined actually appears in the game!
The pole was known about for some time, and we could probably guess Tuskarr rep. I presume there is a rep grind of some kind - beta El reached Revered on quests, but I didn't see a way to go higher.
If correct, the +30 skill looks like a good compromise: The contest still gives the best pole (at +35), but this is better than the +20/+25 from quests.
Oberweiss, September 2008:
Yeah, it was kind of silly that the +25 fishing pole was exclusive to Horde. I'm glad casual Alliance fishers aren't stuck using +20 poles.
Gummo, September 2008:
Is getting this pole likely to be added to the "Salty" title requirement?
el, September 2008:
There's no achievement directly involving the pole. There is "Tuskarrmageddon" for reaching exalted with Kalu'ak (no baby seals involved), but that's not related to any of the fishing achievements.
Zahana, September 2008:
I hope it's not part of the fishing achievements, since the "epic" fishing pole is still not as good for fishing as the one from the Extravaganza.
Gummo, September 2008:
It would also make sense that getting this pole would NOT be a fishing achievement nor part of getting the "Salty" title, because getting it doesn't really involve fishing (unless there are some mandatory fishing parts in unavoidable chain quests, which there might be).
Hy, September 2008:
Well, I'm pleased that it isn't better than the contest pole. I'm willing to overlook the "zomg shiny purplez!" aspect of it. Water breathing is nice, but one cannot fish while swimming.
Gummo, September 2008:
It's possible to fish while swimming, barely:
1) mount up
2) ride out just to deeper water
3) immediately cast before you are auto-dismounted from the waterYou can end up treading water while still having your line out, because you were out of the water during the cast.
Hy, September 2008:
I've done that, but it hardly leaves one in danger of drowning.
Oberweiss, September 2008:

You can end up treading water while still having your line out, because you were out of the water during the cast.Haha, I never knew that. Then again, I primarily fish on a tall female tauren, so I can't say I've ever needed to.

Doesn't the daily quest give reputation past revered?
Only half-way through honored so far, so dying to know ... : )
el, September 2008:
Yes, Idoru - dailies give 500 rep each at revered. They were only added in the last week, and aren't all using the correct icons yet. So far I've found these available at revered:
- Planning for the Future - Collect 12 Snowfall Glade Pups, from Trapper Mau'i in Moa'ki Harbor (Dragonblight).
- Preparing for the Worst - Collect 8 Kaskala Supplies, from Utaik in Kaskala (Borean Tundra).
- The Way to His Heart - Reef Bull led to a Reef Cow, from Anuniaq in Kamagua (Howling Fjord).
Please add any others you've spotted, with your reputation level at the time.
Idoru, September 2008:
Just hit Revered this morning, but while I was Honored, I could get Planning for the Future and The Way to His Heart
Haven't been near Kaskala for a while though, so I have missed that quest.
Btw, The Way to His Heart .... really cute quest : )
Roddamv, March 2009:
Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole has an additional stat for Druids who fish:
+1844 attack power.
WOTLK Fishing is in!
Thalen, August 2008:
Very preliminary, but I discovered today that you can fish in the sewers in Dalaran, first place I've seen in there that didn't tell me there were no fish there.
I've seen 3 fish so far (pygmy suckerfish, glassfin minnow, and bonescale snapper). They're all white text, so you can't eat these for health or anything, but they're probably cookable at some point.
Looks like my leveling is on hold, I'm off to find more!
(got quite a few 'fish got away' wearing just my arc pole and the hat/boots, but with the hat lure applied, I was getting pretty much 0 misses, and the fish were coming up 2 at a time).
Thalen, August 2008:
Quick update...it's not much Dalaran, I've been fishing up imperial Manta Rays, Borean Man 'O Wars, and Rockfin Groupers in Valiance Keep (between crippling waves of lag >.<)
el, August 2008:
You can find my observations here. I'd welcome additions, particularly on rare fish (there don't seem to be any yet) and pools (aside from quests, I've only found Nettlefish School, and even then, only a handful of spawn points). I suspect fishing is only about half done.
Pygmy Suckerfish are usable by Alchemists to create Pygmy Oil (which essentially turns you into a gnome with a scary mask - probably exciting if you aren't a gnome already). Otherwise, I suspect we're going to have to wait for Cooking recipes to appear.
The 2 obvious bugs at the moment are unnamed coastal areas containing inland fish (just like the TBC Azeroth zones) and some quirks in Dalaran, where if the bobber lands very close to a wall, the skill requirement is minimal and the catch includes Raw Brilliant Smallfish.
(I'm still slightly bemused by the fact that all the main WoW news sites completely missed the introduction of fishing.)
Thalen, August 2008:
Thanks, missed that post. If I run across anything new I'll let you know :-)
smoo, August 2008:
mmo-champion.com does give some information about fishing, and the changes to fishing. Not every news site ignored it. :)
el, August 2008:
Smoo: Could you link to the precise information please? I watch that site quite carefully (Boubouille and I play the same "beta exploration" mini-game), but I've only seen recent references to the BlizzCast interview.
smoo, August 2008:
Maybe you expect more, but there was the part in the Interview - Jon LeCraft (Profession designer), and some information scattered(?) through the news over the last past days. :)
But youre right, there was no major newspost regarding the fishing... :)
GIGAR, August 2008:
They should really add some fishing quest that gives XP for lover lvls D:
It's boring as hell to lvl, fishing is just so much more fun :pel, August 2008:
Some pools have been added into the latest build: It looks like pools have been added for the less common fish in each zone. So there are schools for Glassfin Minnow and Fangtooth Herring, but not the more common Bonescale Snapper - the same sort of approach used in Outland.
Plus the trainer in Dalaran is offering Master (previously learnt from the book) and Grand Master (375-450) training (but nothing lower). Grand Master is reported broken on the test forums.
Unfortunately the server seems to be struggling a little more than usual (and "usual" is pretty dire), both with crashes, disconnects, and a tendency to de-sync in a weird way, all of which makes spotting changes a painfully slow process.
rakoth, August 2008:
I assume the max fishing level will be 450. Do you have any idea how many catches per skill level will be need to reach it?
I thought going from 6 to 10-11 at 300 was a big jump. Hopefully we don't need significantly more.
el, August 2008:
Just under 1,000 catches from 375 to 450, as described here.
I should add: What I don't know yet is whether 300-375 has been made easier.
Oh: And I couldn't find a Horde fishing trainer in Borean Tundra. I presume here is one - I've just missed it.
Zhivago, August 2008:
Not really just fishing, but as so many Fishers are Cookers, thought this post from World Of Raids with these new cooking recipes would be helpful:
el, August 2008:
Thanks Zhivago. I'd seen a similar list on MMO-Champion earlier yesterday.
It transpires that there are quite a lot more recipes via the new daily cooking quests in Dalaran. It's a token system, where each daily rewards a single "Dalaran Cooking Award", and you then trade in the awards for recipes and reagents. There are 5 dailies available as I type, but like Jewelcrafting, I'm not sure how much choice there will be on live.
I'll write this up in full "later", but to give some idea, here are the (unchecked) buffs from the fishing-related token recipes:
80 Attack Power, 40 Stamina
40 Critical Rating, 40 Stamina
16 MP5, 40 Stamina
46 Spell Power, 40 Stamina
40 Haste Rating, 40 Stamina
40 Hit Rating, 40 Stamina
40 Spirit, 40 Stamina
40 Agility, 40 Stamina
40 Strength, 40 Stamina
WoLK speculation
Zhivago, May 2008:
So, fellow anglers, time to speculate on WoLK fishing stuff. As I am totally freaked by the benefits of fishing, I can't wait for the expansion.
1) The 3 Ring -- you know we want it, you know it will drop.
2) Spell Inscription -- squid ink, pearls, and maybe some Incriptions themselves for our fishing equipment (like casting speed increase - more fish, more faster).
3) Pets -- I don't have Mr. Pinchy (yet!!!), but maybe his brother, or wierd uncle, Mr. Pinchy Pants.
4) I know guild or player housing has oft been discussed and tabled, but if it ever comes out, I want to be able to make Fishing Trophies and hang them on my walls.
5) Fishing Boats -- forget those Elixirs of Water Walking. I wanna get in my boat, row out to my favorite spot, down a couple of Captain Rumsey's Lagers, and fish the sfternoon way.
That's all I have for know. Put on those fishing caps and think of some more fun.
Spellbinder, May 2008:
Maybe not a funfactor as such, but i am annoyed over one thing. Skill/catch ratio, i'll make 2 examples.
Example one: You are fishing floating shipwrecks after trunks, now with 253 in fishing skill you could get whatever, thats ok. BUT if i skilled up my fishing and i have all the right gear i should have a higher ratio on the trunks then the one with only 253, meaning much less Strangle kelp and other fishes as oily blackmouth and fire snapper.
Example two: Extravaganza, i know some might think it is unfair, but really why would some one with 375 in skill and 517 with all the right gear catch oily blackmout, strangle kelp and fire snapper in Spotted Tastyfish pools?
Like IRL, it is called targeting fishing, the better fisherman you are and right gear (right lure for specific speciment, know where to plant your bait etc) the higher the chance to catch what you came to fish.
I guess this is hard to make real in WoW but i sure could whish.
Oberweiss, May 2008:
IRL, having a better fishing pole doesn't really affect what fish you catch. My little cousin caught a big fish on her "The Little Mermaid" kid's fishing pole. Plus, if fishing in WoW was truly realistic, we would have hour-long fishing outings where we caught absolutely nothing. :)
Part of what I enjoy about fishing is its randomness. If I knew I could go to a certain pond and get an 80% catch rate of the fish I wanted by just standing there and casting, that would be pretty boring. Hunting for schools makes it more interesting, as does not knowing exactly how many fish you'll get out of each school. It's like those eBay commercials say, "It's better when you win it."
Calabar, May 2008:
Blizzard has done an amazing job with fishing, especially with the fishing daily quests. Hopefully they will continue adding fun stuff to the profession come the expansion. And more pets would, of course, be most welcome. So what if Im out 30 bank/bag slots already because of my pet collation. *sigh* More are always welcome. Though I really do hope the rumor from a couple of years ago comes true and Blizzard gives us either something like the keychain for mini pets or a kennel that fits in one bag slot but holds 20+ pets.
As for player housing, that topic is a big can of worms. Pun intended. *grins* Player housing has proved extremely popular in many other games. I still miss my little cabin in the woods from when I played UO. And should Blizzard choose to add player housing to the game Im sure they would do it right. They have many examples to learn from. Unfortunately, Blizzard doesnt seem to want to take the game in that direction.
There is a left over housing portal in Stormwind from back in beta when they were considering adding player housing. But since then Blizzard has shown us that they are more interested in offering raiding and PvP content than role-playing content. There are some small RP elements in game, but they are extremely limited. Blizzard is adding a few more bits of fluff to the game with the expansion, such as the ability to change our characters hair. But I will be very surprised if the powers that be ever add player housing.
Umm dont tell anyone, but I do still have my fingers crossed in hopes of being proven wrong.
Slavaa, May 2008:
As for speculation, I read that the Tuskarr are very good fishermen, and they breed penguins...
Penguin Minipet!

I both agree and dissagree with you. As stated in my original post it's probably not as fun.
I do dissagree with you about "IRL having a better fishing pole doesn't really affect what fish you catch" well maybe not WHAT fish you catch but how big etc. Ok granted that you COULD catch a big fish with little mermaid, but the chance will of course be less then if you have the "right" pole for it or at least if you are able to land it without the pole breaking. And about the WHAT fish to catch i meant more the choices of lure, places and time you fish. Sending out your cousin to catch a pike for example and sending me, the chance that she comes home before me with a pike are really slim to be honest. As i am a skilled fisher and she is not, i will know what lures to use, i would know where they stand etc.
el, May 2008:
My predictions:
- 450 cap on fishing skill.
- A new fishing pole from the Tuskarr.
- Pools of Crystallized Water (just like Pure Water).
- Schools of Northern Salmon confusingly fished with a net.
- Possibly something interesting with harpoons or whales-on-a-rope.
- At least 3 new fish.
Blizzard have been getting rather upset with people discussing the content of the Wrath client they accidentally released onto the internet. That limits what I feel I can discuss here. But from the information thus far leaked, Wrath is shaping up to be similar to The Burning Crusade: A whole new tier added to professions, but no radical changes in how things are done. Of course these are still early days, with a good 6 months of development and testing until release.
Yohaun, May 2008:
Also:
New fishing pole that's a spear instead
New fishing pets (penguins!!!)
New fishing dailies
New fishing gear - perhaps leggings or chestpiece, so that new items don't make old (like the current fishing daily hat reward) obsolete
New type of "Mr. Pinchy" - something like a rare whale you spear that gives you just 1 wish/bonus/item different from Pinchy - maybe a special Fishing quest
LOTS of new types of fish, and of course cooking recipes. Bonuses will probably be mostly new and and/or only slightly better than Outland bonuses. My reasoning for this is that I've heard the gear stats will scale much more in-line with level in WotLK than they did with BC (so that as soon as you cross into Northrend you're not replacing every blue item you have with a random green). So for example cooking the WotLK-equivalent of Bluefish will give 10 or 12 mp5 instead of only 8. And we'll see new bonuses like +DEF, Resil, Frost (Death Knight) dmg., etc.
Stock up on a few fish for WotLK
Gummo, October 2008:
If you don't need to use/sell all the fish you catch, save some Huge Spotted Feltail,Enormous Barbed Gill Trout, or (best) Furious Crawdad for Wrath cooking, as the first two fish recipes go gray at 385 and crawdad at 390. You can get your cooking up a few points right off the bat.
NiceBloke, October 2008:
You read my mind. Been doing this for a while.
Whilst trying for Pinchy. I've been putting one stack of Crawdads in the bank for every one that I put on the AH.
